to be honest, i find this song little boring or too calm. Jazz is one of my favourite music genres, but i dont like all of the songs of a one music genre. I do like swing and all music that has little spice in them.
ma come si fa a non ascoltare qesta musica.( specialmente quando stai da solo) e possibile che non riesco mai a farla digerire ai miei amici. non sanno cosa perdono.grazie benny
One of three standout versions of this song. The other two in my opinion are Miller's iconic, irreplaceable standard, and Shaw's upbeat, feel-good number. I'm 29, and this music is timeless.
This is honestly my favorite song ever made. It's just so serene and peaceful, makes you relax, in fact it almost forces you to relax. Makes you close your eyes for a second no matter what or for how long or short. Just a perfect song.
What a wonderful band; the phrasing and timing of the saxes and the smoooooth trombones!!!! And the clarinet soaring over the band holding back to create the relaxed timing. Do I hear Bucky Pizarelli on the guitar? What a beautiful arrangement .
This is great and Goodman, although probably not a nice guy, was a wonderful musiican and he does a fab job on HC's Stardust. I would recommend Artie Shaw's 1938 version, which is difficult to come by; however, the 1940 version is also wonderful.
And at the end of the day, after it has been a complete ruckus, I come back home and listen to this on a loop for 2 hours straight and everything is simply beautiful and alright.
I'm 17.... I wish I were 17 in the 1930's then probably I would be seen less weird. I don't understand how other teens my age can stand 3sec of Lady GaGa's "music". The world is just upside down.....
@Pianoyappa If you were 17 in the 30s and listened to Benny Goodman, the older folks back then would look at you the same way that older people today look at those who like Lady Gaga. You would be just as wierd back then.
@Pianoyappa If you don't understand then you need to be quiet. I'm not a strong proponent of Lady Gaga, however, Stefani Germanotta is quite the talented musician. That's not even the point though. I don't think jazz was meant to be a style or genre but rather a spirit in which creativity and soul can thrive.
@Pianoyappa I definitely feel that. I am 21, and I'm obsessed with this music. I have a radio show on my college's radio station, KZSC. If you like swing music, you should check it out, its on Saturdays from 2-4 pacific time and it streams live around the world on kzsc.org.
Don't worry, you are just light years ahead of your contemporaries. Instead of worrying, feel sorry for your contemporaries, that some of them may never come to appreciate this true genius.
@Pianoyappa Son...you have restored my faith in hope for the youth of today! God Bless you for having a good head on your shoulders and keep on listening to the classics of American Jazz. You can't go wrong with "real" music like this produced by pure talent without the aid of any computerized anything; When real Men and Ladies produced some of the best music in the past 100 years.
@Pianoyappa glad to hear I'm not alone here. 17 as well and a trumpet player. pop, hip-hop, and rap needs to go..modern country too..it's pop in cowboy boots. fortunately with Adele bringing back a bit of blues...jazz may not e far off.
i've heard this version of this song since i was a little kid. when i moved up to boston and saw snow for the first time i thought of this song..... and every time it snows i have to listen to it. try it out, its a good feeling
Good ears, maidenjuice. The problem at 1:12 happens on the 4th beat (they are in Eflat). The lead trombone plays middle C up to E flat (2 eighth notes in a triplet feel) and the bari. sax plays E flat (3rd space in bass clef) down to D (right below it)...so that on the last 3rd of a triplet on beat 4 you have an pure E flat chord with a D in the middle of it. The trombone was right. The bari sax probably goofed (can't believe it was written that way.)
@biscutsdad You can applaud his ears but isn't it better to sit back and enjoy than to pick it apart? I had to go back and listen 3 times to hear what you were talking about and indeed there is a wrong note there that quickly is corrected. The overall feel is more important than absolute perfection. That's probably why Goodman, a perfectionist him self, didn't rerecord it.
My favorite version of this song. Benny Goodman was a true genius on clarinet...one of those musicians that wasn't just talented but could really communicate with the audience when he played. Genuine classic.
@stevel2611 He was a great gift to us all. I feel in love with Swing and Big Band because of him. Been in a music love affair since. "A Song Is Born" one of my favorite movies. All these great people together. Thanks for posting.
mhm..si hai ragione..ma da clarinettista non potevo che metterla...fra l'altro quella di satchmo mi sa che già c'era quindi non volevo mettere doppioni sul "tubo"..;)

Right, this is the sound of Benny's clarinet that I used to love to listen to. The reason my picking up clarinet to learn. yeah, great. . . .

Anzi. Basta ascoltarli d'altronde.
