I really like both versions of this song. I'll agree that, musically, this is the best version, but I love how angry the '89 version is, it's a great break-up song.
I like both versions. I had never heard this one until now. It's more bluesy, classic rock sounding----partly because it IS older, but it's just more raw. I can hear the Deep Purple, Tommy Bolin influence in this.
Steve Vai gave this SO MUCH more ENERGY! Yeah, this is ok but nothing special... like someone else said previously, you can DANCE to it! I was in a rock band back then, and if someone said that about our music I would have punched them in the mouth - NOT a compliment to say that about a ROCK band in the day!!!
yeah but david reinvited this shit with a powerhouse band come on tommy aldrege rudy sarzo steve vai dude you cant find better all star band for god sakes.
I was born in '77 (when the band was founded), so the Whitesnake I heard was post-1987. I was a big fan since their self-titled album came out and hit big in the U.S. and on MTV.
That late 70s/early 80s stuff is the brand of rock 'n' roll that really died out in America, I think. I guess that is what happens. (Really, that music period was early 70s to early 80s - about 1972 to 1983.)
the first few Whitesnake releases (Snakebite, Trouble, & Love Hunter) were more blues influenced rock, like some Deep Purple stuff... and then after 'Ready and Willing' they became more metal.
I agree, sort of...I love this Deep Purple version that is very bluesy-rock that could almost come off slide it in. The brilliance comes in that Coverdale had it right when he remade this and others with Sykes and Vai.
Heard this voice and had to find out who it was... Went into HMV in Glasgow and was blown away by ur magic, talent and good looks. Still a massive fan 30 years later.... Can't wait to see you again some time soon xxxx
I love this song and I think that Coverdale could be an great choice to play Saruman in the upcoming Hobbit films cause Lee probably wont. David looks like a wizard now, he has the nose, deep voice, wrinkles and the hair....only thing left is a beard.
and I kinda have to agree with Lady Daher..his voice does sound strained on the 80's version (too many cigarettes...?? )..but still either way is mesmerizing!
His voice sounds soooo much better when he's not straining like he does in the version with steve vai and most of his mid 80's songs. But either way or style it´s impossible to not be mesmerized by David's stunning voice!
All the comments are great,ı've read them all.The first time i'm writing my second. For some;had long hair and bald now too :).Fully agree for Sam Hagar's great voice. But i think the similarity of both are more likely the great control and domination over music. Not the colours. The last thing is;Steve Vai is a guitar genius and has loads of technic. Only way to give something good to music is to play something more telling, instead of showin' how good you are. This must be one of his very few thorns
Hard living, especially with Tawny Kitaen=Mega voice change for the worse. Still a good vocalist in the 80's and early 90's. But what's funny, when you see them perform this song now, they use this guitar solo and not Vai's. Guess they can't pull it off.
I think if we could've had the best of both worlds, it would be a non-debate. Steve Vai saved Whitesnake in the early 90s, so I would love to hear him in this old version...he's versatile enough to do this style. Coverdale will never ever be duplicated.
The old version of Whitesnake was so kick ass. This version is funkier, more rockin, and 1000 times cooler than any of that corny shit they did in the 80's. At least this stuff sounds like Rock N Roll!
If this is actually better than the re-recording is very debatable. Coverdale himself called it a "limp performance", but it does have charm in spades. Most people don't like the newer version because it sounds too "hair metal" for them, but I don't know another song (especially not from any hair metal bands) that sounds like it. I think I'll take them both.
i have the orginal "lp" of this song ( album ) awesome before they became a 80's super group raw talent at its best ..

This is why you gotta love Whitesnake!
They have right answer on every possible love situation, and that's all that matters.
This song just helped me decide what i'm gonna do about my girl.
p.s. I, as poet and a writer would gladly die just to write song like this, 'cause its worth dying for song like this.

They don't use either, and the Vai solo isn't too difficult for professionals.

Not for Reb Beach, but I don't see Doug Aldrich playing Vai's solo. He's a great player, but he is more bluesy and less shreddy, if you will.
