"No, he painted to survive, he painted to breath, he needed to paint so that he can make sense of his turbulent existence... "For me "Vincent was the Painting and everything else was just a by-product of who he was...Starry Starry Night... My friend Vincent...

  • Beautifful video....it's a pleasure shared on my facebook's profile..... bye bye!!!!

  • I so commend this video. So lovingly put together. Each slide corresponding to the lyric. Thank you!

    Vincent is our legend!

  • This song makes me cry every time I hear it..I wish there could have been more hope and help for Vincent Van Gogh back in those days..the only help and relief he had was in his painting..rest in peace

  • Poignant, painfully so.

  • wow, what a great job on this ... the song captures him so perfectly, and the images together, amazing

  • Si tous les gens écoutaient cette chanson il y aurait moins de violence dans le monde .

  • I think that image of Vincent at 2:40 was actually an artist version of 'Kirk Douglas as Vincent' in the movie 'Lust For Life' -I think.

  • sopa is gonna take this down...

  • @kyboy700 Because we have allowed it and elected a derelict into power.

  • @kyboy700 Hadn't really thought about it or cared till I saw this! Thanks for putting it into a context my brain could understand!

  • Sungha Jung needs to work his magic on this song.

  • i am 6 years old blablabla and i love this music bla bla bla and i have a sad history bla bla

  • @sofiiaporto LOL

  • today my 6 year old daughter told me about an artist that painted the stars and he was sick in his mind and he hurt his ear and sent it to his girlfriend. and she really loved his work. when i told her that his name was vincent van gogh she said YES .. i told her there was a song written about him.. i will show her this.. this is a wonderful example of his work and the music offcourse perfectly frames the artists.. i hope she will understand. she's a smart kid.. if she doesnt .. she will soon.

  • @dslamcracker I LOVE your post . :o)

  • I loved this song then and i love it even more now. thanks DON""""""

  • The Simpsons actually introduced me to this song. No regrets :)

  • @pinkyluv310 Well I can say that I was watching that episode and I heard "Perhaps they never will" or something like that so I found this song on Youtube

  • i'm not into art but this song is so graphic & touching, has a better song ever been written?

  • It's so sad ;^;

    RIP Vincent van Gogh

You will live forever in my heart as the best artist the world has ever known.

  • Vincent Van Gogh sold one and only painting when he was alive.. The Red Vineyard

  • if he was in this world today....he would probably be treated the same way...no one knows how to look or listen anymore....no one can live form their heart anymore....

  • Im 15 but I consider this more music than all todays stars put together

  • @MrMichaelll123 I'm a potato, you're comment is invalid.

  • @Th3Hatebreeder That is the fucking most stu.... WTF?

  • Stary nights

  • masterpiece ... remember summer nights when I slept in my backyard :_)

  • definately one of the best song writters/singers of all time, your a master Mr Mclean

  • One of the greatest songs ever written.

  • the most beautiful lyrics, I love to hear the way McLean really analyzed this painting and described it so poetically.

  • i just here because of a project lol

  • my mother just bought his album again today, tried not to cry when heard this, but i did. so genuine.

  • what a strange beutiful disturbing universe

  • A beautiful beautiful piece of art ..... for my ears, my eyes and my soul :)

  • Thank you for posting this. I always loved Van Gogh's works, although I am familiar with his work, there were so many that I have never seen before! What a great way to help patients heal thru art.

  • i really really love this song, whenever we rent a videoke machine i always play this song,it's so soothing,relaxing.,.,

  • my song...

  • This surpasses beautiful.

  • I will share this with my students.

  • Check out Joanna Wang's cover of this song peeps. Its got a more lazy summer feel to it. Personally I rate it equal to the original.

  • Holland

  • we live in a world where people want everything to be perfect. They want things to be just like what they see on tv....next time you come across someone, don't judge him by his looks or by what people think of him... take some time to know him ... perhaps beneath that ravaged cover theres a beautiful story awaiting to be read...give him a chance.

  • @bitethis47 Best paragraph I think I've ever read in a youtube comment section.

  • @mikesmith007x thks..was written with a lot of feelings

  • dear @bitethis47 stop using the word him.

  • @bitethis47 r u a fag

  • Beautifully edited. Love all the paintings - no mediation, just art. Thank you.

  • a class song...and singer.

  • What a beautiful song.

  • A beautiful song that's all I cam say

  • Brilliant Song, Real Music.

  • I dedicate this song to my father the artist David Rakia

  • I'm 1012 years old. I met Vincent once. He truly had an amazing gift to see things in a different way. I also gave him a hope that he desperately needed.

  • @4Nicon Hello, Doctor :)

  • this reminds me of doctor who :) i love this song and the episode!!

  • I'm 15 years of and I absolutely love this song. I like to close my eyes and just let go while I listen to this. Try it! It's like a whole new world.

  • @pancakesarebetter that would be called acid

  • @pancakesarebetter Oh yes it is! I love this song very much...

  • @pancakesarebetter i don't understand why so many kids feel they have to include their age when they comment on older music. You don't have to make yourself out to be some amazing kid who has gone against the grain of modern music to listen to older music. music is music know matter how old you are

  • @pancakesarebetter ....Better than what ? Waffles ? !!!!! just kidding. great song. One of MANY by this guy

  • It's very sad, you can see him going slowly insane by looking at his pictures as time progresses, look at starry starry night, no sane person sees like that. I wish we had him longer then we did RIP Vincent Van Gogh

  • I have never seen a video and song compliment each other as well as this, truly amazing thanks...peace : )

  • Great song, but the slides are too rapid,--effect is jarring and little time to absorb the pictures.

  • vincent art is beautiful even in 240p true art don't need no high definition.

  • The slideshow is worthy of the song - there are several paintings included which I've not seen before, and I thought I was a Vincent fan. Many thanks.

  • better*

  • one of the best songs ever

    noone beter that don

  • RIP Vincent

  • I was not a fan of his but Tupac had good taste in music.

  • is it wrong that this song has reduced me to tears?

  • @silverhowler999 It is wrong when there are no more tears left to shed. Be glad that you have tears, it shows you have a heart !

  • @aine6996 good point

  • Tupac brought me here............

  • I'm proud Vincent was from the same country as I am, and how of how wonderfully this song expresses the pain of his life

  • "Ideals are like stars, you will not succeed in touching them with your hands,

but like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guide, and following them, you reach your destiny." - Carl Schurz ;)

  • What a wounderful find this video is.

  • This song has grown in meaning to me throughout my life, and only now do I finally, finally after the death of my own brother, also far too beautiful for this world, "get it." This world is just not good enough...yet, as those asinine 201 (and no doubt counting) prove. Van Gogh was an artist and so is McLean; they just make their ever poignant pictures in different ways.

  • @Amechryst Takes pain to make a lot of us get it on a whole lot of things. May you find peace in life and remember the joy your brother brought you through the sadness.

  • How could 200 people have the guts to dislike such a beautiful song?

  • @nonni011buddy probably they saw the pictures and thought that this was an History Video and didn't see it...

    (or maybe they were st****)

  • @nonni011buddy It does'nt take guts to be have a dead soul and an empathy bypass perhaps?

  • I love this song so much*

  • Perhaps every phrase I wanted to retype was said much more BEAUTIFULLY than I can even conceive. And thank God for that!!!

  • Why does this have dislikes ? I don't understand

  • @mafiachandima 200 people that do not posses a heart and feelings to embrace such beauty.

  • As much as I appreciate the paintings, it feels like the maker of the video was just trying to get as many paintings in the video as possible. It doesn't have the same "flow" as the song. You get too easily distracted by the paintings when you realize you have to pay attention. And it takes away from the song. So it's a thumbs down from me, sorry.

  • tenemos 199 personas sordas ! que no pueden escuchar la hermosura de esta cancion :D

  • love this song !!!

  • I am 60 years young ,a strong man , and I still cry at this song. What the world did not see in this man while he was alive too bad.

  • @Homeport1989 Why do I have to read these bs comments with any good song? Let's agree that the song is indeed beautiful, but what does it matter that you are "strong"? Are you trying to say that you are cold? Cynical? Emotionally unavailable? Real men can cry when they hear or see beauty. They can also not cry and just appreciate the song. Or if the song is not in their taste, they can do whatever they want. What real men don't say is something along the lines of what you said.

  • @Homeport1989 i share the same feelings......tears come to my eyes.......thank you for making me understand I am not the only one.....

  • I wish I knew more about music to understand why this song makes me so emotional. I'm sure it's not just the lyrics.

  • This song always ALWAYS makes me cry

  • this is my son bed time song

  • They would not listen they're not listening still,

    Perhaps they never will.

  • Classic....

  • This song reminds me of myself as a teenager for some reason.

  • Another point of proof that proves the 70's was the greatest decade of music.

  • this song was written about me :(

  • i sobbed when i first read the lyrics. they are so beautiful.

  • Okay guys, bottom line is this.Vincent was one of the most brilliant minds of his time, with paintings shook the world. The only bad thing was that Vincent was never recognized in his time, which eventually drove him into insanity and caused him to commit suicide.Which would make you wonder, what would have happened if he was famous during his time?

  • @SocraPlaTotle Well, he likely wouldn't have had so much problems with his parents. His brother would have lived longer.

  • @SocraPlaTotle He would have had less problems with his father and mother. His brother would have likely lived longer, too.

  • beautiful lyrics, I often feel like this song applies to many young artist who die young, before we can truly appreciate their full potential.

  • I love this song, for some reason it is playing now within my head! Colored with all that I would paint, I can see the colors, they play also within my head, and they become the work at hand! The Visual is never as what I am seeing now! Thank you for this song, Van Gogh, is one of the greatest Artist, and sometimes wonder what this World is meant for, do they only like your pain, and with saying that, I paint, yet nothing touches the World of Van Gogh! <3 <3 <3

  • no comment....................ESAGERATA

  • this song was played in the last few hours of tupac's life!

  • @Chilaxxinn And it will be played a hundred years fro.m now when Tupac and us will be compost and biofuel

  • Really this music is so rich and beautiful, how can anyone share toxic language regardless of their taste, the trolls will rule if you let them from under the bridge, leave em alone. God Bless all.

  • rsb409, I rest my case. This correspondence is now officially closed, as I do not want to start the new year speaking about talentless idiots like ... Amy Winehouse aka Miss Tattoo/Alcoholic, Justin Bieber aka Babyface, or, you've guessed it - Lady Gaga aka Miss Meat Dress/Madonna Wannabe. This forum is supposed to hail REAL artists like ... Don McLean, Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley, David Gates, Jim Croce, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield, etc., etc.

  • thank you very much.....for Killer. so many fond memories!!!! lenadoon 1970-1979.RIP

  • Just beautiful

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written... <3

  • beautiful

  • This is genius. I like to listen to it every night with a glass of scotch and a cigarette on my porch.

  • Randall my love, I miss you and know also that your suffering "for your sanity" is over. God speed

  • So I am 18 years old and I can't help to "like" some crap my generation is listening to for it is fun. But hardly any music of nowadays will get even close to how beautiful this song is.

  • @Eduardo12388 then you have good music sense

  • TIMELESS

  • I may actually like a few of Lady Gaga's songs, but... her stuff isn't this. It's not the same level of art as Don Mclean's work. They're beyond compare. Gaga's stuff might be fun to dance to, but these songs are fun to think to. To live to. To write or paint to.

  • คิดถึงจัง

  • lovely! beautiful! and a classic. end of!!!

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • @edwdixon5 Yes, Vincent is a beautiful song about a beautiful person and artist!!!I just had to hear it because I just lost a loved one

  • This correspondence is now closed.

  • Played at George Best's funeral...

  • now i believe we understand the true hatred of the machine to those who understand the world

true wisdom is not counting all the drops of the waterfall but wondering why the water seeks the earth

  • black and white walk hand in hand.

  • I have never seen a more beautiful 240p video on Youtube.

  • lol the joke is on us for trying to over analyze this shit. he was just a crazy mother fucker painting things that he saw around him. no deeper meaning behind, it was just a picture to him, he is just a product of popular media trying to overanazlyze his work just so the "academics" could have something to study

  • @ThePrincess4569 This is just not so. I understand the viewpoint though because I used to feel that way too. It was a matter of having too simplistic vision though. You can't begin to imagine the truth and beauty captured in a creative's imagery. I completely disagree that art is academic. It's not something that can be broken down or explained. This is coming from an atheist: other than great works of math and physics, great art is the closest thing we come to seeing God.

  • Why are all of you putting @WinterFox333 down? The most beautiful thing about music is that the meaning can be shaped and molded into relating too many differant things people are feeling. Why do you come on here to argue? I came to listen to a amazing song, just take a step back and relax. Enjoy the song.

To: @WinterFox333 good for you for speeking your opinion, that is a characteristic many people lack.

  • @morganvshepard Yes, I'm going to have to agree with you. I suppose he' s had enough shunning, and that we all have different opinions, and yes there is no point in arguing over something that has already been proven wrong. We should enjoy the song.

P.S. This is not to say that I believe myself totally free of blame.

  • I am experiencing a VERY despodent night I have an appt. w/my therapist in the am. The holidays SUCKK! If there wsn't such a stigma attached to mental illness, perhaps we wouldn't have so many suicides. 1 in 4 americans suffer from mental illness. Just open your mouth * let it be known. No shame in that!

  • @TheMustangsally75 "Just open your mouth * let it be known. No shame in that!" If only it were that simple. : / I hope you have a safe a happy holiday season.

  • thumbs up if modern family bring you here.

  • HELL YES!

  • NOFX covered this song! I love it!!

  • This is a simply beautiful song about a beautiful man. It's stood the test of time and it will still stand long after we're gone. Fact..

  • this song was about a gay man who came out.. and they way his family and friends responded drove him to suicide its written through the eyes of his lover....at least this is what my mother told me ... and it makes sense to me...lol...

  • @WinterFox333 Uh, no. Thats very very wrong.

  • @WinterFox333 wtf?

  • @WinterFox333 Your mother was completely wrong, he was actually a schizophenic who struggled with his sanity all his life, and was astrosized by society. The main reason for all of his portraits of people, was cause it was the only way he could get any human interaction. There is a book written on his life, its very interesting read.

  • @WinterFox333 O_O

  • @WinterFox333 Then your mother has no idea what the song is about nor can she be considered a fan of Don McLean. The song, as Don McLean said when questioned in multiple interviews, was written on the life of Vincent Van Gogh who struggled with Mental Illness and shot himself, resulting in his death two days later... I suggest you search the song and the meaning and get an understanding of it... references in the song (e.g. 'the weathered faces') refer to his works of art during his life.
