Cool track, especially live. Man brings it. Kinda sad that these guys don't ever smile...even at each other...over the pure joy of putting together a great sound.
I saw Elvis many times in concert and he is allways at its best. The only regrets I have is the lost of Bruce Thomas on bass. He was never replace. Thanks to brother Pete Thomas on drums
Great song! Bought "This Year's Model" when it first came out (with misprinted sleeve). I played it God knows how many times...Pete Thomas proves you don't need a kit the size of Madagascar to play rock n roll. Costello's lyrics are just outstanding.
Somehow i always knew good music would save the world. Please learn about the Zeitgeist Movement and the Venus Project.................. well of course first TURN IT UP!
He is the best. The absolute best, and still is. This video reminded me why I became his #1 fan back in the day, and remain so. Met him last year; the realization of a dream. Nice, quiet, funny, considerate. I saw him first late one Saturday night on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert some 32 years ago and have been a believer ever since. And that comment about "oozes sex appeal?" I'm so with ya.
"This Year's Model" was one of my favorite albums...I was 20 when it came out...saw Elvis C. live at the Paramount NW in Seattle, 1978, got his autograph when he was leaving to get on his bus...all these songs like Lipstick Vogue bring back lots of memories...
Ive been a Costello disciple since I first heard 'Detectives' way back then as an impressionable 15 year old. @ysgaisyih Yeah that me. I'm the Greyhound Diary guy. I have a book out too. You can find it on Amazon. It's got way more stuff in it than the live show.
Man, the Attractions could really play in person. I wore this album out when it came out. Although they had the disgruntled punk image, they were true musicians. What talent.! Bruce just kills this song.
@kpenn0910 Bruce Thomas was pure genius on the early albums. It was a shame that he drank himself to the point where Elvis couldn't stand him any more.
Whenever I am driving and this song starts playing my driving speed increases dramatically, lol. Even now after 30 years, lol. Cool live version, thanks.
@zzota You're the luckiest person alive! I'd give anything to see Elvis play in 77, too bad I wasn't born until 78...........I was born in the wrong generation.
Elvis was ridiculously cool for his first three albums or so, and his rhythm section is outstanding as always. Pete is a beast on those drums. Great video -- and love the suit!

Johnny, he say's 'Lost in the Lipstick Vogue' . Listen to the rant in the last chorus. Easy mistake. It's a big sound for a four piece. I must have heard them play this live 20 times and it always had this amount of energy. Unbeatable.
he didnt say "less" he didnt say "lost" he didnt say "last" what he said was "stop fucking arguing over petty little fucking things" enjoy the fucking video instead of acting like schoolboy pricks!!!!
HA! He pulled the same sh*t in Minneapolis, MN when I saw him. Don't recall exactly what year it was, but around '78 - '80. Worst concert I ever atttended. Still gotta love the guy's music.
I saw him at Long Beach Arena Jan. '79, and he was great. I got to meet him backstage at a Neil Young concert at Irvine Meadows when he was special guest in 2003. He was really cool. I've seen him four times and that show was his best. Two of the best five concerts I've seen were him. He's a genius.
Well, a few. There's plenty of great players out there, and Bruce is definitely among the best. We shouldn't knock the other guys though. I was talking about Pete (no relation) though; he's on drums and also powering through the song. Not many people use the toms like that anymore.
2. Neil Young was from 1966 - 1979 including Buffalo Springfield.
3. The Replacements thanks to Paul Westerberg from 1984 to 1990 .. 5 great CDs
4. Honorable mention to Graham Parker, David Bowie and Smokey Robinson and many more ... Could There be a best song then This Years Model or Young's Powderfinger or MR SOUL or ON the Way home? Or the Replacements Left of the Dial ? Nope.
Forever Changes is in my top five all time. Talk about a self-defeating career, nobody fucked his own career worse than Arthur Lee. He was one of a kind, though. I'd love to be able to say I wrote the 42nd best album in rock history. He wrote the most intense 2:27 in rock history, too, 7 & 7 IS.
Yeah Forever Changes would have to be in my top 10. And I seem to end up liking self-defeating artists .. Love wouldn't tour; The Replacements were drunk for most of the tour; Elvis said the n word and then turned to Cole Porter for an idol (idle worship); Neil Young would put out a lot of bad experimental CDs. I am not talking Tonights the Night .. that was great .. but sometimes he just wanted to piss off his record company (David Geffen). 7&7 is great .. also House is not a hotel..
Whod'athunk the little nerdy ectomorph who wrote songs about how hard it was to get girls, and how hostile he felt towards them as a result - would, decades later, marry and have twins with current Queen of Jazz, tall, blonde, beautiful pianist/singer Diana Krall?
Elvis is my "neighbor" now, as he lives much of the time in Krall's home town Nanaimo, BC, Canada,on Vancouver Island. 'Fraid I liked his songs & singing best back when he was the '70s skinny 4-eyed guilt-laden, vengeful English nerd!
Sure, there are some better looking women out there, But let's just say she's a much more attractive female than Elvis ever was a man! And she remains Queen of Jazz in a few ways: she's the best selling jazz artist, and sells more CDs than her hubby. She plays piano much better than Elvis plays guitar, and sings much better than Elvis too. So there.
He didn't cut off the last beat, the next beat would be the first chord of "Watching The Detectives", which always followed "Lipstick Vogue" in '78 and '79. Chump yourself!
The instrumental interlude, and Elvis' vocal inflections, underscore why LIVE MUSIC is incredibly powerful. Too often audiences what their favorite records played back note for note, with nary a pitch changed. This concert shows Elvis and his Attractions were masters from the beginning.
I'm a fan from when this was This Years Model was his current album. Elvis was blessed to have such a good band. You can't say enough good about Elvis Costello, he has certainly proven himself to be a musical genius.
Love this song and I bought it new back in the day...Never quite sure what a "Lipstick Vogue" is to this day...(I"m 47 and remember asking my mom if she knew back in '80...)...Proud to say I had good taste in the midst of the disco generation...
This probibly isn't the right 'interpretation' of it, but what I think of when he says 'Not just another mouth in the lipstick vogue' is he's talking about someone who simply doesn't follow the current trends (Got this idea from thinking of 'Vogue' magazine). I don't know if lipstick was a big thing back then, but yeah. Just what I thought. :)
This is just friggin as tight as it gets. I don't care if it's speed-fueled, this is an amazing performance, it captures the essence of what he was all about.
The early punk side of Elvis and the Attractions at their most ferociously AWESOME!!! My favorite song off of their best album. Sounds fresh thirty years later. Thanks for posting.
ttractions! Lipstick Vogue and Lip Service - great songs from him. He is so young here but that voice is remarkably close to what you hear from him today. So dynamic and strong! Makes you almost feel just like a human being, don't it ? dead live wire

Usually, live versions of well known songs seem (to me) to lag in places, if not the whole song. This version is exceptionally good...

you will notice in the comments by the good person posting this vid that it is raining. N
"Live Lipstick Vogue. Elvis nails this song even though it was raining. Not sure where I found it."

He was known to date a model or two back in the day. (Thinking of Bebe Buell - Liv Tyler's mom)
Anyway it could be a commentary about a personal relationship. The album this came off of is titled "This Year's Model."
