  • Awesome!

  • @jzenman errrr no. Pinkpop is and was a festival in the Netherlands.. Not uk..

  • goosebumps man!! this years model has ended up being one of my favourite albums of all time and seeing em do this tune live is a buzz

  • where was this?

  • @hardyandtiny Pink Pop Festival in the UK.

  • Miraculous. Never ceases to amaze me.

  • the bomb!

  • they dont make bass players like they used too

  • damn that drummer is on acid, what a beast

  • Cool track, especially live. Man brings it. Kinda sad that these guys don't ever smile...even at each other...over the pure joy of putting together a great sound.

  • THIS Elvis Costello would have kicked Diana Krall in the stomach and been on his way!

  • one word...BRUCE.

  • This lineup is one of the greatest bands of all time.

  • so amazing!

  • I saw Elvis many times in concert and he is allways at its best. The only regrets I have is the lost of Bruce Thomas on bass. He was never replace. Thanks to brother Pete Thomas on drums

  • Shockingly high quality. Stupidly great. I would RUN to the store for a dvd of the whole concert.

  • Great song! Bought "This Year's Model" when it first came out (with misprinted sleeve). I played it God knows how many times...Pete Thomas proves you don't need a kit the size of Madagascar to play rock n roll. Costello's lyrics are just outstanding.

  • i cant believe how good this is.....

  • This was in Geleen holland,1979 pink pop festival, presented by the late great John Peel.

  • He is the best. The absolute best, and still is. This video reminded me why I became his #1 fan back in the day, and remain so. Met him last year; the realization of a dream. Nice, quiet, funny, considerate. I saw him first late one Saturday night on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert some 32 years ago and have been a believer ever since. And that comment about "oozes sex appeal?" I'm so with ya.

  • S.O.S. - paint's cracking on my walls and I still can't get this loud enough. (Gotta go - my neighbor's knocking....)

  • "This Year's Model" was one of my favorite albums...I was 20 when it came out...saw Elvis C. live at the Paramount NW in Seattle, 1978, got his autograph when he was leaving to get on his bus...all these songs like Lipstick Vogue bring back lots of memories...

  • god, he just oozes sex appeal. No, really. I'm serious.

  • Ive been a Costello disciple since I first heard 'Detectives' way back then as an impressionable 15 year old. Followed his career and always see him live when he graces Australian shores and have almost everything he's breathed on. So a BIG THANK YOU for posting this. Great quality live show. In my blissful ignorance, what are the Greyhound Diaries of which you speak? And keep posting. BTW Had a great moment coming home one day to discover my mum listening to 'Get Happy'

  • 6 Justin Bieber fans don't like this.

  • Badass!

    too bad Detect cut off

  • i dont wanna be "that guy" but i am personally responsible for a shitload of these views. this might be the best thing on the internet, its like online banking, free porn and google rolled into one.

  • @ysgaisyih I know... Sometimes when I get lost in YouTube I am amazed at how many great videos there are out there. I uploaded these years ago when YouTube first started and there was only about two guys uploading Elvis vids. Now there's hundreds.

  • @jzenman DUDE! are you the guy from ur channel? if so u are awesome. me and my buddy watched the greyhound diaries and had seizures. even if ur not that dude u got great taste. yeah seriously though this vid is so amazing my mom put me onto elvis when i was like 13 i stole the double disc from her and listened to chelsea and allison and watching the detectives till my brain melted. then my buddy's dad played this for me off an LP. this vid of this song... oh man...THANK YOU!

  • @ysgaisyih Yeah that me. I'm the Greyhound Diary guy. I have a book out too. You can find it on Amazon. It's got way more stuff in it than the live show.

  • @ysgaisyih . I remember playing This years Model at home, about 33 years ago, when I lived with my mum.

I was hoping my mum would like it - you know, you like people to like your stuff. About twenty five years

later I gave my eldest son the cd. I'm glad to say my son is a great fan of Elvis now,. I'm now glad to say, it never did anything for my mum

  • time to pick my jaw up off the floor now. so smokin

  • legendary. absolutely legendary.

  • hes a buddy holy clon

  • Pete Thomas: you blokes stand up front and rock out, i'll just sit back here and be the best F!@k'n drummer ever

  • sick rhythm section

  • I saw him 4 or 5 times in the late 70s early 80s. Worth standing out in the rain for a long time to hear. Really amazing.

  • Mag fucking nificent

  • I knew it!!! Bruce Thomas and Bill Gates are one and the same!

  • 1:27 Bruce must really hate that bass. jk

pete and bruce really lock it in.

This is the hardest Elvis has ever rocked.

  • It's clear he was obsessed with Buddy Holly's style of dressing, but completely a musician of his own time. Amazing!

  • "Sometimes I almost feel/Just like a human being."

    My 1980 college yearbook quote!

  • definitely elvis' best song

  • Love that bass line :)

  • sometimes I almost feel just like a human being - what a great, great sond! Loved it since I heard it the first time - and they are doing well live!

  • ELVIS COSTELLO !! THE beST

  • Where has all the great music out of England gone? It's been almost 20 years since the Spice Girls....can't we forgive and forget?

  • @MarkSentMe Franz Ferdinand? Kaiser Chiefs? Arctic Monkeys? Gorillaz? MIA?

  • Two words: Bruce F****in' Thomas!

  • @mistarax hell yea, he's great

  • Man, the Attractions could really play in person. I wore this album out when it came out. Although they had the disgruntled punk image, they were true musicians. What talent.! Bruce just kills this song.

  • @kpenn0910 Bruce Thomas was pure genius on the early albums. It was a shame that he drank himself to the point where Elvis couldn't stand him any more.

  • WOW.

  • Wow, this is insane.

I don't know if he's coked up or just completely on edge, absolutely nails it.

The suit is pretty dapper, and his Jazzmaster is looking rather pretty here too!

    Ace video.

  • @seanmadcap Sped up, not coked up. I saw an interview where Elvis says that they did A LOT of speed back then . No matter. Still an incredible band!

  • Still mighty like no others

  • ah i just saw him in N.O. for jazz fest i was hoping he would play this song

  • Whenever I am driving and this song starts playing my driving speed increases dramatically, lol. Even now after 30 years, lol. Cool live version, thanks.

  • Saw them perform at Newcastle City Hall in 1977 - best drum solo I've ever seen

  • @zzota You're the luckiest person alive! I'd give anything to see Elvis play in 77, too bad I wasn't born until 78...........I was born in the wrong generation.

  • bruce is slammin! they're hot & sexy in the rain!

  • What a f*****g GREAT BAND!! Just awesome!! Song isn't too bad, either.

  • the bass is so great in this song, its nuts

  • My favorite elvis song (presely or costello haha)

That drum solo at the beginning grabs you by the balls man.

  • My Favourite, the lyrics are great!!!!!!

  • What a John Lenon peer he is! Not many fit into that little club, but Elvis does!

    "I say, that is"!!!!!

  • Elvis was ridiculously cool for his first three albums or so, and his rhythm section is outstanding as always. Pete is a beast on those drums. Great video -- and love the suit!

  • I love his singing voice! Its deep and kind of husky. It's great.

  • Man I would stand out in the rain as long as it took if I could see Elvis live back then.

  • @superlou1s meeee tooooo!!!

  • Maybe they told you you were only a girl in a million

    You say I've got not feelings;

this is a good way to kill them.

Select the control and then insert the token

You wanna throw me away but I'm not broken.

You've got a lot to say. Well I'm not joking.

There are some words they don't allow to be spoken.

Sometimes I almost feel just like a human being

    It's you

not just another mouth in the lipstick vogue

  • You say you're sorry for the things that you've done. You say you're sorry but you know you don't mean it. I wouldn't worry. I had so much fun. Sometimes I almost feel just like a human being It's you not just another mouth in the lipstick vogue It's you not just another mouth in the lipstick vogue oh yeah. Get to the slot machine almost dead on arrival Just hit me one more time with that live wire
  • Don't say you love me when it's just a rumour

Don't say a word if there is any doubt.

    Sometimes I think that love is just a tumour;

you've got to cut it out.

  • @superlou1s I got to see him live in 1978 in Seattle, fantastic!

  • The best "sonic assault" song he ever wrote.ncredible to think that he could write songs as diverse as Alison and Lipstick Vogue so early in his career

  • Last Of The Lipstick Vogue

  • Lost in the lipstick vogue... he usually introduces the song as Lost in the Lipstick Vogue when he plays it live

  • I'm pretty sure he says "lust into Lipstick Vogue"

  • oh crap your right

  • did you get that? he says this is called "less than lipstick vogue" he's trying to trick you into thinking they're gonna play less than zero

  • Johnny, he say's 'Lost in the Lipstick Vogue' . Listen to the rant in the last chorus. Easy mistake. It's a big sound for a four piece. I must have heard them play this live 20 times and it always had this amount of energy. Unbeatable.

  • He said last of the lipstick vogue...

  • he didnt say "less" he didnt say "lost" he didnt say "last" what he said was "stop fucking arguing over petty little fucking things" enjoy the fucking video instead of acting like schoolboy pricks!!!!

  • calm yourself

  • why does every fucker nitpick over the slightest fucking thing. you all must lead sad lives!!

  • wow. i think your the one with a sad life, getting all worked up about a couple little comments. soooo hypocritical. why don't YOU enjoy the video

  • Good 'ol times! Punk!!

  • If Jesus had have played in a band... Costello would have been a great opener!

  • WOW What an awesome live "Angry Elvis" performance! Steve Nieve on organ rocks

  • Bruce and Steve are just so damn cool

  • Elvis needs windshield wipers on his glasses ! Great line- " sometimes I almost feel just like a human being"

  • Stupendous -- Elvis is #1!

  • This kicks so much ass!

  • My flavourite EC tune. Love those lyrics, and that's as top-notch a bassline as you're ever going to hear. Incredible cut!

  • Jesus .... that was like the best live pperformance of anything ever!

  • I saw EC in Long Beach, 1977. he flipped off the crowd, played 45 mins' and bolted without an encore.. pure magic. R&R's angry young man indeed.

  • HA! He pulled the same sh*t in Minneapolis, MN when I saw him. Don't recall exactly what year it was, but around '78 - '80. Worst concert I ever atttended. Still gotta love the guy's music.

  • I saw him at Long Beach Arena Jan. '79, and he was great. I got to meet him backstage at a Neil Young concert at Irvine Meadows when he was special guest in 2003. He was really cool. I've seen him four times and that show was his best. Two of the best five concerts I've seen were him. He's a genius.

  • yo, nailed it indeed. I thought it was perspiration at first but you're right he slowly gets wetter and wetter.

  • Elvis Costello!!!

    <3 first favorite artist ever

  • Pete Thomas is either a freak of nature or a force of nature. Possibly both.

  • SOOOOOO in agreement! Saw him get a standing ovation mid-song with EC at Sunrise Musical Theatre, FL. What bassist ever did that!?

  • Well, a few. There's plenty of great players out there, and Bruce is definitely among the best. We shouldn't knock the other guys though. I was talking about Pete (no relation) though; he's on drums and also powering through the song. Not many people use the toms like that anymore.

  • I crossed up my Thomas'.Sorry for the confusion.

  • The only rock genius'

    sure the Beatles.... but overlooked

    1. Elvis Costello was from 1976 - 1979

    2. Neil Young was from 1966 - 1979 including Buffalo Springfield.

    3. The Replacements thanks to Paul Westerberg from 1984 to 1990 .. 5 great CDs

    4. Honorable mention to Graham Parker, David Bowie and Smokey Robinson and many more ... Could There be a best song then This Years Model or Young's Powderfinger or MR SOUL or ON the Way home? Or the Replacements Left of the Dial ? Nope.

  • Queen, Genesis (with Gabriel), King Crimson, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Clash, The Police, Roxy Music among others.

    And yes, many other songs.

  • I like your list esp Roxy Music and the Clash and David Bowie.

And thanks for not mentioning Pink Floyd or the Grateful Dead.

    Also greatly overlooked and unknown:

    The Move (later became ELO)

Love (CD - Forever Changes - headed by genius madman Arthur Lee)

    Marshall Crenshaw

  • Forever Changes is in my top five all time. Talk about a self-defeating career, nobody fucked his own career worse than Arthur Lee. He was one of a kind, though. I'd love to be able to say I wrote the 42nd best album in rock history. He wrote the most intense 2:27 in rock history, too, 7 & 7 IS.

  • Yeah Forever Changes would have to be in my top 10. And I seem to end up liking self-defeating artists .. Love wouldn't tour; The Replacements were drunk for most of the tour; Elvis said the n word and then turned to Cole Porter for an idol (idle worship); Neil Young would put out a lot of bad experimental CDs. I am not talking Tonights the Night .. that was great .. but sometimes he just wanted to piss off his record company (David Geffen). 7&7 is great .. also House is not a hotel..

  • Whod'athunk the little nerdy ectomorph who wrote songs about how hard it was to get girls, and how hostile he felt towards them as a result - would, decades later, marry and have twins with current Queen of Jazz, tall, blonde, beautiful pianist/singer Diana Krall?

Elvis is my "neighbor" now, as he lives much of the time in Krall's home town Nanaimo, BC, Canada,on Vancouver Island. 'Fraid I liked his songs & singing best back when he was the '70s skinny 4-eyed guilt-laden, vengeful English nerd!

  • krall beutiful, u need glasses too

  • Sure, there are some better looking women out there, But let's just say she's a much more attractive female than Elvis ever was a man! And she remains Queen of Jazz in a few ways: she's the best selling jazz artist, and sells more CDs than her hubby. She plays piano much better than Elvis plays guitar, and sings much better than Elvis too. So there.

  • agreed , although not about her music, she suxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. irregardless luv u bc

  • Sweet Bass

  • the non-brothers thomas can kick it

  • does anyone know where to find drum tabs to this song...great song! nice video too!

  • listen to bruce and pete rocking out fuck yeah GREAT video

  • He didn't cut off the last beat, the next beat would be the first chord of "Watching The Detectives", which always followed "Lipstick Vogue" in '78 and '79. Chump yourself!

  • pwnd!! Good call cachiva!

  • WOW. Fantastic.

  • steve is my favorite

  • I LOVE ELVIS!!! He is my favorite musician!

  • Quality stuff, cheers for the upload, not heard this in ages.

  • is that really Perry?

  • He's a damn genius... LOVE HIM!!!

  • band is HOT like fire

  • That is incredible........the attractions...have a incredible groove...and the voice of elvis is fucking real!!!!

  • The controlled tension is great -- wish EC would do more hard rock type stuff.

  • Check out other tracks off This Year's Model, which is where this comes from. Especially, Radio Radio, Chelsea, and Pump It Up.

  • The instrumental interlude, and Elvis' vocal inflections, underscore why LIVE MUSIC is incredibly powerful. Too often audiences what their favorite records played back note for note, with nary a pitch changed. This concert shows Elvis and his Attractions were masters from the beginning.

  • f-me elvis was absolutely electric during this time period....awe inspiring, simple yet powerful as hell.just unbelievable.

  • How did this film get past Des Brown?

  • Pinkpop Festival '79. The Police played earlier that day :)

  • Anyone notice Joe Perry of Aerosmith sitting off to the side of the stage?

  • in the red shirt?

  • Yeah... kinda cool.

  • this is great! what a tight group -

  • Awesome!!!

    My fav vid 4 sure.

    Elvis Lives!

  • I love his suit. !!!

  • Wow!

Why can't he do rock and roll anymore? The riffing and solos were great!

  • Usually, live versions of well known songs seem (to me) to lag in places, if not the whole song. This version is exceptionally good...

  • You are very true .

Funny part is the sweat all over the PINK !! costume ... amazing things youtube offers.

  • you will notice in the comments by the good person posting this vid that it is raining. N

"Live Lipstick Vogue. Elvis nails this song even though it was raining. Not sure where I found it."

  • I'm a fan from when this was This Years Model was his current album. Elvis was blessed to have such a good band. You can't say enough good about Elvis Costello, he has certainly proven himself to be a musical genius.

  • incredible.

  • Double WOW.

  • WOW. Fantastic.

  • OH MY GOD.

    incredible. speechless.

  • Thanks for the video! Never heard this song before. Don't know how I missed it back in the day.

  • ALL FOUR of these guys are SPECTACULAR artists.

  • one of the top 5 songwriters of all time, puts noel gallagher and the rest of them vain twats twats in the shadey

  • Love this song and I bought it new back in the day...Never quite sure what a "Lipstick Vogue" is to this day...(I"m 47 and remember asking my mom if she knew back in '80...)...Proud to say I had good taste in the midst of the disco generation...

  • This probibly isn't the right 'interpretation' of it, but what I think of when he says 'Not just another mouth in the lipstick vogue' is he's talking about someone who simply doesn't follow the current trends (Got this idea from thinking of 'Vogue' magazine). I don't know if lipstick was a big thing back then, but yeah. Just what I thought. :)

  • He was known to date a model or two back in the day. (Thinking of Bebe Buell - Liv Tyler's mom)

Anyway it could be a commentary about a personal relationship. The album this came off of is titled "This Year's Model."

  • This is just friggin as tight as it gets. I don't care if it's speed-fueled, this is an amazing performance, it captures the essence of what he was all about.

  • f****ng Great ! Just listen to the bass line by Bruce Thomas , one of the best in the world !

  • you are clueless

  • holy crap! :O

  • Boy, those f*ckers can play...

  • That is just straight up sexy.

  • The early punk side of Elvis and the Attractions at their most ferociously AWESOME!!! My favorite song off of their best album. Sounds fresh thirty years later. Thanks for posting.

  • Why are all the coments some chick trying to get people to look at her strip. seriously that is really disrespectful to the music.

  • Interesting video, thanks for sharing. I had to watch this several times!

  • i always love suit wearing rockstars

elvis rocks- lipstick vogue is REAL rock(and REAL music)

  • Killer song Declan at his best.I wouldn't mind his bass

    player for my band

  • ttractions! Lipstick Vogue and Lip Service - great songs from him. He is so young here but that voice is remarkably close to what you hear from him today. So dynamic and strong! Makes you almost feel just like a human being, don't it ? dead live wire

  • thankyou, bedankt, dom arigato, merci, thank you, thank you, you get the picture...

  • Steve Nieve is the best ever. Bar none.

  • TA! man . this is great.

  • nothing less than awesome
