It's great to see a film award going to the U of U (my alma mater) instead of BYU. Go Utes! I like the storyline -very creative symbolism and a good social commentary on our modern obsession with "escapism". I can see how much hard work you put into this. It has a few places that the sound doesn't seem consistent - not sure what's up with that. I'm sure there were a lot of limitations but overall it's very excellent work and the award is well-deserved.
@Madeline4354 It depends. If you're looking to be in production, there are better schools. We don't have the budget or the backing to compete with the big film schools like AFI, UCLA, and USC. But The U's film program has a fantastic screenwriting and game design program. Their film studies classes are pretty good too. The animation program is improving but not up-to-par yet with BYU.
@darthLaric I will actually be going to the U in the fall, and film is my intended major. I was either Utah of FSU for me, but admission into FSU's film school is pretty competitive.
@Zenithteal Right you are. That's the reason why I don't want to work in machinima anymore. You don't have the control like you would with live actors or animators. But to my team's credit, compare this to some of the other machinima films made at the U and it actually looks fantastic. My team really did the best that was given to them.
@6dark6alex6 Which program, Film or CS? The machinima course is under the EAE program, a joint program between Film and CS for game design. It's one of the best game design programs in the US.
@darthLaric I'll be going for the CS division of EAE, so I'd be taking Machinima. I'm hoping to do 3D modeling and animation out of college, but also wanna be able to program
@6dark6alex6 Yeah, The U has a really good program. 3D modeling is a required class and you may get into some animation classes too. I'm a film student (non-EAE), so I took machinima for fun. Most of my team were CS-EAE student though. They really like the program.
Your animating and directing must have a very healthy and meaningful imagination behind it. If i didn't know any better, I'd say YOU were the one who created "the matrix" ^___^
Congratulations on the $1,000 scholarship, Luke, you deserve it.
PS- I read extra info from Edgar Neilson's website. . .didn't mean to sound like a stalker
@MetrOali113 Your not a stalker?!! Dang it....I want a stalker...=( Naw, William Gibson made "The Matrix" in Neuromancer. Wachowski Brothers borrowed quite a bit from him and Ghost in a Shell. But yeah, The Matrix did inspire me, but my main inspiration was Blade Runner.
p.s. Jk about the stalker, nobody get any ideas. >=C
I think i know what your friends used to make this video. Some of the characters come from half life, so im guessing they used Gary,s mod or something?
@thefoxfurry5 Close, Valve has the SDK available on steam which includes Hammer and Faceposer, the programs we used to make it. Garry's mod is slightly different.
Haha I'm at University of Utah right now in Machinima

Looks just as well done as any of the current cut-scenes on professional video games. Unfortunately, that isn't a compliment.

@darthLaric Agreed, BYU's animation even 5 years ago is lightyears ahead.

@Madeline4354 Its great in terms of access to camera equipment, and it has tons of resources. But in terms of recognition, it has none.
