a therapist told me a study was done which showed that pessimists tend to be more realistic than optimists. In other words: reality does pretty much suck, and to be 'happy' requires delusion.
People who have never experienced Multiple Sclerosis - A.L.S. - Parkinsons - Schizophrenia - ( insert any debilitating disease here ) etc... would not inherently understand how it is to have these diseases.
This is the same with depression disorders - and people who have never experienced it.
I have found a good sentence to explain how a person with depressive disorders sees other people who are "normal".
Who the fuck are you to tell someone 'It's all in your head'? You see, (Wait, NO YOU FUCKING DON'T), you ignorant assholes of the world thinking that everything this goddamn world is so fucking great and happy...
Listen, how about you look at this world and the hell humans made it. We have enough nuclear weapons to blow all of our asses off, people all over Asia and Africa die because you assholes don't bother to think about how much you have...
People just don't understand. The ones who don't understand the most are the ones who claim to be your support.... My husband always says "are you better yet? In a joking manner yet I know he really means am I better yet. Like I can just take a pill or a nap or something simple like that. The one comment I like the most is.....It's all in your head. What a dumbass thing to say.
Thank you for this hilarious look at how stupid people can be who aren't depressed
The guy seems quite real and funny. I know how he feels, but the depression thing... He's thinking about it too much. He just needs to snap out of and shake it off. I hope he's okay?
Interesting! I thought about suicide daily for 25 years and I guess I never was clinically depressed because these things never would have bothered me. I must have had some other kind of depression or maybe I wasn't depressed but just couldn't see a reason to live. Shit, I'm not educated psychologist but just someone who got over hating life by spiritual enlightenment.
omg..these are spot on!!! i have been living with depression for over 20yrs too and it still amazes me how people think its something we can just shake off. in all fairness i think many people just don't know what to say.many times they mean good but just are clueless. i think we need a video teaching people what to say to a person who is depressed.
great video - funny and informative. Love it.

One of the worst things a person could say is:
"It's just a phase, you'll get over it."
That was a comment from my best friend.
She doesn't understand.

Other ones I have heard:
You should be grateful for what you have.
...crap, I forgot what the other one I was going to write...Oh yeah:
Stop being selfish - you are being selfish.
I suffer from CRS. I can't remember what that means.

Finally . . . someone who understands
the ones that really get me are the ones which blatantly questions you state, it proves they don't know anything about you or your depression.
-You don't seem depressed?
-[after a few days] Are you still depressed?
-Are you sure you are depressed?
and above all
-Why don't you try not being depressed?
