i always figured morrissey and marr wrote the songs then plasyed for the other guys then they jammed on it and let it grow as a group, just like in most bands
For all of U arguing hear, i think that while you listen to all the Smiths songs Andy with his bass playing tune within tune. A bass tune within gutiar tune, and they both play it beutifully. I think that Andy and Johnny were in creatign it together. So please give some credit fo Andy and Mike as well.
Marr and Morrissey split the royalties yes, but Marr did not write *any* of Andy's basslines! He was an incredible musician in his own right. Marr had his hands full with the other 15 tracks of guitar/piano/harmonica.
Sorry to push the point, but Marr wrote all of the music, hence why the song is stated as written by Morrissey/Marr. The others were given a lesser % of royalties to reflect the fact they didn't write the music and they agreed this at the time but later attempted to win damages, hence one reason why the band split. If Andy Rourke wrote his baselines, he would not have needed to take legal action in the first place.
"I got the drum riff going and Andy got the bass line, which was one of his best ever and one that bass players still haven't matched." Johnny Marr on recording "The Queen Is Dead".
"One of his best ever"? Yes, one of Andy Rourkes best ever basslines, strait from Marr's mouth.
Nooooooooo! It's ambiguous. It could (and I think does) mean that Marr "Andy figured out/I gave him the bassline and it was one the best he's ever played". As I say, the evidence is that Morrisey and Marr were accredited in every song as having written them and the other two were happy with this arrangement and signed to that effect at the time because it reflected the fact that M+M were the two creative forces behind the band. Anyway, we both agree it's a great song and bassline!
Bass Player Magazine: How did you originally approach creating the melodic bass lines of the Smiths?
Andy Rourke: It helps that Johnny and I had played together since we were kids, so I had a good understanding of where he was coming from on the guitar. With the bass I tried to do a tune within a tune. I wouldnt be happy with a bass line unless you could hum it. I wanted it to stand up on its own. A lot of it just happened, really. When Johnny started playing, I would just join in.
C'mon, just give me one source. Give me one quote in 20 years where anyone, Morrissey, Marr, John Porter, ANYONE has claimed that Johnny Marr wrote even one of the Smiths basslines. I won't hold my breath.
Andy Rourke is criminally underrated. Awesome job here man.

Such a brilliant bassline for a top song, Andy Rourke was as influential as marr, very underrated. Very well played and the tone is spot on
you've inspired me to unpack my bass

Though Marr wrote the bassline too, not Rourke, but I know what you mean, The Smiths music is very very well crafted indeed.

wow!.. didn't know that, if so, marr gos up another notch in hero status

Yes mate, Marr and Morrisey split the royalties 40/40 and leaving 10% each for the other two, which is one of the reasons why they all went to court
