You forgot: Most Powerful Weapon - The One Ring vs. Death Star. Okay, the Death Star is far easier to destroy, but the One Ring can't destroy a whole planet within a few seconds. In a direct confrontation Sauron would kick Palaptine's ass into... well, we all know how that worked out ;-) But Palpatine is a master manipulator and great strategic thinker with an army more than ten times bigger than Sauron's. In war I would bet on Palpatine ;-)
Well, Sauron would wish to be able to die, because being alive as a non corporal entity and drifting through space without any chance to get ever back to power because the Ring is also drifting somewhere through space and everybody who served him is dead, is not very nice.

not so much, Barad-Dur was built with the power of the ring (Sauron's own power basically) and wouldn't fall until the ring was destroyed, not only that but Sauron is a fallen demi-god according to Tolkien's Silmarillion, so I don't think he would care about one measly little star destroyer

I am all for Sauron, but unfortunately his forces would be defeated. All it would take would be an aerial bombing, or an orbital bombardment from a Star Destroyer or worse yet, the Death Star just gets it over with and destroys all of Arda, then it's goodbye Middle-Earth, Sauron and everyone else, especially the Hobbits :D
He acts within both groups in different personas playing both ends against each other, and then will rise above them when they've wiped each other out.

Palpy learns about the Ring, sends Ankin to get it, Ankin rapes Frodo takes the ring and senses it power. how is this supposed to be a competition, since no matter what Palpatine does, he can never kill Sauron...Sauron is immortal. Oh and neither Sauron nor Palpatine are *THE TRUE* dark lords...they are just dark lords at the time. Morgoth would be the true dark lord here, since he's the only immortal being of absolute evil even vaguely represented in this contest.

Palpy learns about the Ring, sends Ankin to get it, Ankin rapes Frodo takes the ring and senses it power. Puts it on Sauron fucks with Ankin, Ankin goes back to Palpy and kills him becoming the Emperor. Ankin then double crosses Sauron and blows up Middle Earth with Death Star. Sauron then possesses Ankin creating a Darth Vader Sauron uber villian. Something like that .
