Really fine singing -- especially from that physical position. Not easy to do at all. I also with they would play this on TV yearly again. Maybe replace the crap that they seem to think everyone wants...
This is the original broadcast from 1951, there is another upload here that is just the music, but the poster uploaded the entire opera and a history of it.
Kuhlmann's voice is far better than Teresa Stratus.....and I love Stratus! But this is SUPERIOR to the television version aired in the 70's. Stratus was a better actress and better looking, but Rosemary Kuhlmann's technique was flawless. Also, the boy soprano who played in this Amahl was the best I ever heard.
I am looking for any other videos of this opera. I have the 1951 video (with Chet Allen), 1952 (McIver) and this 1955 one. Looking for the April 1952 broadcast and any other broadcasts after McIver left. Please help. Contact me via YouTube.
she has (had) a very beautyfull mezzo voice. Actually I think this role needs a dramatic voice. Mezzo or soprano... it is the same, but there are some moments in the opera, the voice has to express a real dramma ( in the quartet, or in the aria, but also in the recitatives with Amahl)... And because she has also to sing beautyfull lines she has to have a liric voice also. Anyway, she always sings lower than Amahl, that´s why I really think the role ist for a dark dramatic soprano or mezzo.
The role was written with Kuhlmann in mind. Menotti actually asked her what her best high note was while he was composing the work. The role doesn't go over a high A (Kuhlmann's best high note). Kuhlmann is a mezzo. See her biography at wikipedia or the excellent interview of Kuhlmann in January 2007, vol 71, no. 7 of Opera News.
I was delighted to find the DVD available after 57 years. I've mentioned the opera to several old friends and they all remember the performance of Rosemary Kuhlmann with great affection. The interview with her is fun and gives insight into the early performances. It's nice that she has been honored by being featured with the interview on the DVD. The recording is a gem and a national treasure! I just wish it was in color. She was a great artist and the opera is charming.
Say, I just turned 54 this year, I was born in 1955 and this came out in 1955, don't make me older than I am! ;) I LOVE this show! I wish NBC would air it again, right along with the annual "It's a Wonderful Life."
So, so wonderful... I haven't heard this in about 15 years... It still gives me goosebumps! I'd love to play the role of the mother, I wish I didn't have such stage fright!
Thanks a bunch for posting this; My choir's putting this opera on for our annual yuletide feast, and I'm auditioning for the part of the Mother, I need all the help I can get!
Thanks for posting this! I just played the role of the Mother while attending the opera program at the Interlochen Arts Camp, and I really grew to love the character and Menotti's music... but I didn't get to sing this aria due to time constraints, which made me pretty sad. :( However, it was a lot of fun watching this, to see how the role was meant to be sung - I like this soprano's voice a lot, and the camera angle adds a lot to the drama of the scene.

I love this opera
I performed Amahl some years ago
with my mother as the widow.
My mother is very fine contralto, so it can be done by a soprano, mezzo, or very rarely a contralto

I can't tell... is this a mezzo-soprano or a soprano?
She has a lot of low notes... but also alot of high notes.

She may be a lyric-soprano...this is a lyric soprano role. :)

The aria is in the "American Aria Anthology" in the mezzo-soprano/alto volume.
Also, Kuhlmann did originate the Secretary in The Consul, which is a mezzo-soprano role. I think that role has a fairly similar range.

The timbre of her voice sounds like a mezzo to me - and a mezzo with a good range can sing a high A which is her highest note in the score.
