It didn't look like such a hard landing to me, I think the fact that there wasn't such a strong flare was probably what made it look like that. Would guess that the fact it was a dirt strip + the C-17 being a heavier aeroplane means that a stronger noticeable flare wouldn't be practical. Have no idea though, would like to hear from anyone in the know :)

Last night I had a weird dream. I was in an A330 and the plane went over a deep cliff, then dived straight down into the middle of it. The plane hit the runway at the bottom nose-first but then immediately came horizontal again. The last and truly weirdest thing was that on the 10-metre long runway, the plane managed to stop completely from full speed. And it bumped into a pizza man at the end of the runway.

@dude193547 I've nothing to do with the services but I would imagine its a self-protection thing. If you're flying low over Afghanistan in a bigass transport jet you'd want the plane on the ground and stopped as quickly as possible. That's my guess anyway.

@dude193547 In a "high risk" landing like that with limited runway length it is much safer to get it down firmly and quickly so you can start braking. Also, the loose surface is much more forgiving than tarmac for the initial touchdown so it wouldn't have been too bad in the cockpit

A friend of mine flew one of these in Afghanistan much like this one. For the size of the plane, they are surprisingly easy to fly ( for the experienced pilot ) and is overall just a great plane.

I'm pretty sure he landed so hard because the runway is short and it's dirt so they try to get the wheels on the ground as fast as possible instead of flaring which might make him float down the runway a little bit.

@RavenofShalott I have owned windows, run Linux, and own a mac. Yes, their little extra features and programming make boot-up times long and simply slow it down completely. They are also susceptible to attacks. I owned windows 7, and it wasn't that bad. But macs are about three times as fast, and they last. I love OS X Lion. It is secure, intuitive,fast, and productive. Though expensive, the OS and computer are well worth the price... no weird errors or flaws like windows.

For a second I thought a plane was going down into the neighborhood. I went outside and saw this gigantic, screaming, C-5 fly over my house at what looked like only several hundred feet high. Someone said the C-5 has the same engines as a 747-400? I can't believe that. 747's engines don't make that kind of noise.

@enigma800 I'm not a C-5 maintainer and not an engines guy (I work on the flightline on a fighter base) but I have flown on a C-5 and saw many of them flying. I can't say they have the same engines as a 747-400 or not, but personally I don't think so. C-5s can carry a massive amount of weight. It's a two floor aircraft, the first floor is cargo and the second floor is the passenger area. The engines are extremely powerful. If they are the same as a 747-400, they are at least modified
