Something tells me some TV preacher crawled deep up inside Jerry Jarret's ass about a week before this character was created and unveiled upon the wrestling public.
I actually was part of this crap and never liked it from day one. Tag partner Terry said we should do it to get in the door. It only lasted a short time (many reasons) so I looked at it as the Lord tagged in and put a stop to it. And to God be all the glory.
Who was the guy playing Ernest Angel? The guys at Wrestlecrap claim they'd never heard of this angle until they researched material for their "Book of Lists", and the late '80s Memphis promotion is not my area of expertise, so I'd like to learn more about this angle. I'm pretty sure former wrestling manager and current blues musician Rev. Billy C. Wirtz worked for Lawler for a bit either at this time, or shortly afterwards.
they got a lot of heat over this angle from the bible belt community. They toned down this angle a few weeks after Angel's debut. Angel became more of a conventional wrestling manager, rather than a riff on Jim Baker.
@flipgood89 - 'toned down'' - I remember back then when it was said southern evangelical types got offended by the character of Rev Ernest Angel. But darn, he sure was a good character!

Since this is a mockery by fools, read Psalms 53:1.

The 'Wrestling Village USA' line is a direct reference to televangelist Jim Bakker's Heritage USA timeshare/theme park.

Earnest Angel? Sounds like he was loosely based on televangelist Earnest Angley.
