@matchbookseeksmaniac@taliskermcchouffe sorry man but I think it's Roy Haynes. Look at his teeth, and google eyes. Are you sure? The "R" on his sleeves could stand for both Richmond or Roy.
@matchbookseeksmaniac Sorry man but I think it's Roy Haynes. Look at his teeth, and google eyes. Are you sure? The "R" on his sleeves could stand for both Richmond or Roy.
you mean the one where it blurs for a couple of seconds? I thought that was pretty cool as well. You just see white flashes over the screen. It's nice.
@lifestraight Sleeves are extremely important in getting the essence of a song across, and are usually overlooked. ;-) (Seriously tho', musicians should be the ones to film musicians. I don't want to see Hendrix's nostril hairs when he's peaking a solo, know what I mean?)
The piano thing at the beginning quotes the intro to "Song with Orange" from Mingus Dynasty. I don't know what the song it turns into is called though...
no, it's definitely something he wrote. it's in his compositional style and i think i've heard a recording of him playing it (or perhaps the mingus big band or dynasty)
i have this DVD I bought it in cleveland freek-tastic... its so cool because it show the person,..... not just the amazing musician and composer he was!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good to see footage like this cause it reveals that Musicians are Humans too. Sometimes in the beauty of the music you forget that there are human beings behind it.
what is the song called that he is singing to with his daughter which he picks up with the band after at about 2 mins in? I can't get it out of my head
Funny how every other group actually has a country of reference except "black". What is really meant is American, when you or anyone else says "black", because Africa is a distant memory. You see my point. Mingus was All-American through and through. His long ancestral lineage was varied but his essence, esp. with music, was strictly American. Even his personal style, good, bad and ugly, was strictly American.
Yeah he did, its not that he did it vocally its just that usually when you write music its supposed to come from you and not from just writting it down in paper or playing it. Im sure miles thought about the music before writting it down.
He was a genius on the bass, but too bad he didn't take responsibility to his own actions. He was evicted because he couldn't pay the rent, not 'cause he was black. He just picked a profession that most musicians starve at. It's too bad he wasn't a millionaire bass player, but that's life.
The millions came and went. He was bipolar, spent time in Bellvue. Wasn't the best at managing the money. He was a huge success, headliner, toured Europe to deserved acclaim.
I'm amused at his giving a sip of wine to his 5-year old daughter--so French.
Of all Europe, the French appreciated the Bebop Greats the most, where they found profound respect and experienced no discrimination--impossible in the 1960's US.
well to set shit straight he wasnt a Bassist he played the Double Bass they didnt call themselves bassist in thoes years man they where just known as Double bass players
to set shit straight you dont know shit. "double bassists" wer in fact called bassists. In fact today when talking in terms of jazz a bassist plays the double bass. Now if you are going to keep thinking that way I will in term call electric bassists "bass guitarrists" or "electric bass players".
It's called "the man who never sleeps", and it's quite rare, but go find the album "mingus plays piano" where he records it as "she's just miss popular hybrid". Beautiful!
I thought people with Swedish blood were thin.

japa1990 3 years ago
Mingus did indeed write music.
However, in his various bands the other musicians usually didn't get the written part as he would sing each part to them individualy.
wefreekings2 2 years ago
he actually had a scribe for a while, that he would follow him round and write down any ideas he had

funny to see that at 9:00 he tunes the bass from Gb to G#!! Mingus didn't have absolute pitch? Thanks for posting!
iltulipano 3 years ago
having perfect pitch would not have helped mingus to compose the music he did, considering he uses a lot of dissonancy and abstract colors.
