It didn't make sense until I read your info on this, and some people commented on it. There are only 2 reasons I can tell you are singing. 1 there are a few spots you cut out a little early, 2 you can hear when you catch a breath. The fact that those are the only reason anyone can tell means you are a DAMN good singer!!!!!!!! I'd even go as far as saying you've taken lessons and possibly a vocal major?

The devil in the song is supposedly the planter who has sold off everyone or in some versions sent off to the fields to work. I've always been told it was a slave song. @astroclast The travellers come upon some women in the river. They represent the Sirens from Greek myth. Sirens are creatures who sing so beautifully that they lure men/sailors in with their hypnotizing voices, only for the sailors to crash on the treacherous rocks that they live on. Sirens are a modern symbol for "treacherous" women who are beautiful but dangerous.

@Aerodeth ok, heres the Real explanation for the song. you may or may not have heard that 'o brother where art thou' is based on homers story of 'the odessy' this is sung by three beautiful washerwomen who the main characters happen upon, and their song kind of enchants them to come closer--like the Sirens in the origional tale. here its sang in a seductive context,

but this song actually exists, it was based on a gospel lullaby--according to stuff that came with the cd.
