Ricky Nelson was both a bona fide teen idol and a legit rockabilly cat (he was a big Carl Perkins/Sun Records fan and collector.)
He was great, because he loved the music he did.
Slightly off topic, Dorsey Burnette did the demo record for "It's Late" on Imperial Records before Ricky decided to record it. Worth a listening to if any of you get a chance.
@1tchavey And yet if the same video was made today it would contain blacks, Latinos, Asians, at least two gay couples, one or two with Down Syndrome, and if the money was right, Chaz Bono!

@missaloveselvis..he IS tired...he's obviously up past his bedtime and trying to let everybody know it's late and he'd better get on home, that he's been gone too long...but no one gets the hint, they just keep sitting there with those goofy smiles on their faces, without a clue...and then he's going to have to face Ozzie...
Before the Beatles, Rick Nelson taught Americans what being a rock star was all about. I always waited 'til the end of Ozzie and Harriet to hear Rick sing. And the girls screamed and sighed for Rick. But Rick had class, being backed by a very young guitar wizard named James Burton. Rick had it all, good looks, perfect voice, class, great songs, and a kick-butt back-up band.
@dougalmac54 I always thought it was very interesting that when ELVIS started to tour he picked Rickys guitar man (James Burton) to head up his band. I always thought that Ricky was just a wee bit better than Elvis. Perhaps the King did to!
@code2high Don't agree with you about Ricky being better than Elvis. I'm a huge fan of both. I'll never understand comments that pit performers against each other. They was both absolutely superb in their own right...
No, the guitar is done by Rock & Roll Hall of Famer James Burton (he's on the right). James' session resume includes most of Ricky's songs, along with playing with many other musicians. He played on Arlo Guthrie's "Running Down The Road" album (which had "Coming Into Los Angeles" on it)
It is lip-synched to the recording, like most of the videos on "Ozzie & Harriet" were.. But whereas Ricky's lip-synching to his own vocals, the other three are lip-synching to The Jordanaires.
What a great song. Ricky was adored by a huge percentage of mostly white folks in the late 50s early 60s. He was marketed squeaky clean, and that fact alone may have led to a fall from grace before making a big comeback before he was tragically killed.
Ricky - R.I.P. - thanks for all your wonderful songs - the nowadays idiots should listen to your songs - a n d - . . they should . . . better I say nothing !!

To all of you who post these video's a big thank you, Rick was a great singer and a even nicer person, Rick took karate with my instructor Bruce Tegner, And on a couple of occasions I got to meet and help on his lessons, I was a punching/kicking bag, Twisting/choking/throwing dummy, And even though Rick just took karate as a hobby, Just as he did trapeze work, Played tennis or anything else he did he was pretty good. Rick, Thank you for all of the pleasure you gave us.
If you look at the clip when it hits 39 and 40 seconds that girl who looks like she had a face and smile lift that is my grandmother... Billy Jo Winters... She has told me time after time, that she loved Ricky as did a whole lot of girls and to this day, she has a picture of them together at the shoot and if she did not marry my grandfather, she would have married him instead
@myanelli Dear Mike: Thanks for sharing that piece of info about your grandmother. She was a very attractive young lady. She had the looks of a promising actress. Did she do any other guest spots? How was she chosen for this show. It's people like yourself who share their memories with all of us so that we can appreciate this clips from our collective past with more appreciation. Thanks again, Mike Newton.
@myanelli Another post further below claimed the woman in the picture is of an actress named Judy Lewis and is actually the (formerly secret) daughter of Clark Gable and Loretta Young. I GOOGLED her name and found several links about this...and also looking at Google Images....there's no doubt that Judy Lewis and the woman in the video at 39 secs are the same person. Either you had a very famous grandmother....or grandma (or you) told a little white fib.

@myanelli Thats a great story. She can't be very *old* today...only in her late 60's ??? I'm only a couple of years younger..and remember Ricky very well..
HIs (often covers) had influence. This was his best but so short. His voice sounds exactly like his father's, a singer too. I once went to the San Mateo Co. Fair because Ricky was headliner. @jezebelmisunderstood It all comes and goes in cycles.. In a few hundred years the teen idols will again be respectable and well-mannered.. and the gift of Music will again be rediscovered by the mankind..

Ricky Nelson, you set the mold for pop. I wish yiu were still around with the many fans that you have. Some smart folks are getting bored with the 'New Music of Today, Gaga, Miley, ect. Your old gutair player, James Burton ar Making New Music. With all respect and admiration.....
the way he blinks in so sexy! i just wanna bite his bottom lip!!!! and dip it in chocolate! god, you're crazy to not watch that twice. i dont even need the volume, to watch this. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
@shootinthetube- I was there, too, and I recall one Rockabilly cat who had least three tombstones tatooed on his arms, with the names Eddie, Elivis, and Gene writen below one each. I suspect that his next one was going to say Ricky...A very sad time for many of us.
I was a huge fan, and ironically, I was at his funeral, a small gathering of family and friends. I think they wondered ....who was I. I was just led there, thats all. My tears flowed with theirs.
I agree that the guitar licks on Ricky's records were great - of course the record bosses didn't publicise the fact that it was James Burton. As most of Ricky's publicity photos had him holding a guitar and his videos had him 'playing' a guitar, I think they were happy for us to believe the guitar work was by Ricky himself.
@LT1HILLINGHOE I love stories like this about the early days of rock, especially when they are about the greats such as Ricky and the King. Actually, I heard something like this in an interview, and that afterward they remained friends. Can you imagine being in company like that, with all that talent and charisma and the high of success? I actually spoke with Fabian once, and he had some great things to say about Elvis. What a time--what incredible songs in the early stages of Top 40 R&R!
@seonfox Congragulations!!!.....you're the first person to leave an ignorant comment here.
DING DING DING!!!! You're the big winner!!!
What does he win, Johnny?!......Thanks Bob! This contestant wins an all expense paid tuition to some comprehension classes held at his local primary school. And when he is finished with that we're going to throw in a free course on how to shed the sack of stupid he pulls from. Back to you, Bob!
@LT1HILLINGHOE what did seonfox say to win all these prizes. The website took the comments down so we can't judge for ourselves whether the comment warrented this criticism. Did she prefer Elvis to Ricky or did she think that Ricky was usurping Elvis' style. Personally as a guy, I liked Ricky but his music had a beat I could dance to and I was able to sing his slow ballads to my girlfriend.,
@MrFrontrowkid I can't even remember. But whoever it was went on the attack towards my comment about Elvis being in awe of Ricky Nelson when they met in the 50's. And I like Elvis better by far.
the 50's and early 60's where amazing! parents and kids could listen to music together and like it...Ricky Nelson, Pat Boone, Everly Brothers and the list goes on and on!
Few people realize that Ricky was actually an "Eric"....I am also an Eric who, at 57, is still "Ricky" to old friends and certainly to family........when Ricky Nelson died, a part of me died too, as I always felt a connection with not only him, but to the 50's that I so wish we could go back to now, as a country!
@silverwbky Im 27 this is all the music me and my friends listen to. We are sick of the current norms in todays society. This is great stuff i wish I lived back then.....the country was strong then.
@silverwbky ....... I am also of the same generation but have a little closer connection as I grew up in the same town as "Eric" (Teaneck NJ) but being 10 years behind him I never got a chance to meet him or his family before they headed to California and stardom. His loss was definitley a major tragedy for all of his fans and the music world as a whole. I covered 2 of his songs, HELLO MARY LOU and LONESOME TOWN, the latter song being my all time favorite love ballad. Check them out if you can.
sometimes you just listen to the music and take a break from corporate greed polemics and Obama (either way you feel about him) and just rock 'n roll.
Give it a rest and enjoy music. You can be miserable the rest of the time. Ok?
Ricky Nelson is underrated and glossed over by Rock History. In his day Ricky was a super star. He was a teen idol. His image was in all the teen magazines. He ranks fourth as the most rock hit record sales.
@nelsondowney I totally agree. He was one the first to really bring a strong emphasis of Country & Western into his music. It is often said about other artists, but he really is under-rated.
I'm at a loss here....every so often they play Garden Party on the oldies station...but the voice and music doesn't sound the same. Is the more popular version of Garden Party the one done by John Fogarty...who is whom I think I am hearing on the radio??
Garden part was much later than these TV shows, 1971 or 72 I think. He sounds very different. The song was about his disgust with people who only wanted to hear his old stuff.
If mermories were all I sung, I'd rather drive a truck. -

0:43, guy beside Ricky becomes Elvis's lead guitar from 1969-1977! James Burton

I was a huge fan, and ironically, I was at his funeral, a small gathering of family and friends. I think they wondered ....who was I. I was just led there, thats all. My tears flowed with theirs.
shootinthetube 1 year ago 2
I agree that the guitar licks on Ricky's records were great - of course the record bosses didn't publicise the fact that it was James Burton. As most of Ricky's publicity photos had him holding a guitar and his videos had him 'playing' a guitar, I think they were happy for us to believe the guitar work was by Ricky himself.

@TOMBANCROFT You mean he did not know how to play guitar! I am shocked, I thought Ricky played guitar.....??????

When Elvis met Ricky Nelson, Elvis was in awe. He couldn't believe he had met Ricky Nelson. Documented.

What a time--what incredible songs in the early stages of Top 40 R&R!
sealevelattitude 10 months ago
@LT1HILLINGHOE That sounds like Elvis. I don't know that he understood how big he really was. Didn't they hit the charts big at about the same time?

What does he win, Johnny?!......Thanks Bob! This contestant wins an all expense paid tuition to some comprehension classes held at his local primary school. And when he is finished with that we're going to throw in a free course on how to shed the sack of stupid he pulls from. Back to you, Bob!

Syzygy60 8 months ago
@LT1HILLINGHOE what did seonfox say to win all these prizes. The website took the comments down so we can't judge for ourselves whether the comment warrented this criticism. Did she prefer Elvis to Ricky or did she think that Ricky was usurping Elvis' style. Personally as a guy, I liked Ricky but his music had a beat I could dance to and I was able to sing his slow ballads to my girlfriend.,
MrFrontrowkid 7 months ago
@MrFrontrowkid I can't even remember. But whoever it was went on the attack towards my comment about Elvis being in awe of Ricky Nelson when they met in the 50's. And I like Elvis better by far.

Few people realize that Ricky was actually an "Eric"....I am also an Eric who, at 57, is still "Ricky" to old friends and certainly to family........when Ricky Nelson died, a part of me died too, as I always felt a connection with not only him, but to the 50's that I so wish we could go back to now, as a country!
silverwbky 1 year ago 35
@silverwbky Im 27 this is all the music me and my friends listen to. We are sick of the current norms in todays society. This is great stuff i wish I lived back then.....the country was strong then.
ianemmott 1 year ago

Emeraldknife 2 years ago
@Emeraldknife
Garden part was much later than these TV shows, 1971 or 72 I think. He sounds very different. The song was about his disgust with people who only wanted to hear his old stuff.
If mermories were all I sung, I'd rather drive a truck. -
