If you're a good musician, you don't need your eyes, dude. You don't need to look at your instruments because you know where every note is, you know where to place your hands to get the right notes at all times.
@JensClaesson By that logic I could ask you why anyone would count in quarter notes instead of 2nd notes: Because it's not the same thing. If 8/8 is the same as 4/4, then it's also the same thing as 2/2 and even 1/1, but you don't count or play it like that. How would you play something in a crazy time signature like 15/16 or 29/32 if you're only counting quarter notes?
Not sure if this is rhetorical, honest or just facetious but...
The metrical division and subdivision of the pulse of a song is really what determines whether you're going to compose it as 6/8 compared to 3/4, or 4/4 compared to 2/2. 10/8 as compared to 5/4 would have a different feel to it.
For you, maybe. But not everyone, obviously, which leaves the actual metric division a bit moot until you can get a hold of Mats/Morgan and ask them yourself.
Personally 10/8 makes more sense to me... but I was just mostly pointing out the fact that 10/8 and 5/4 would feel different. You could write this in 5/4 but... the only way to know, again, is to ask Mats/Morgan yourself.
To me these guys simply define "ahead of the curve". Just seems to me that scandinavians are always pushing it a step further... Just take bands like Meshuggah for example (or even The Cardigans hahahah)

So music hasn't stopped progressing past the nineties... Love it!!! By the way, I am hearing things, or is the melody from their other tune Baader Puff creeping in from 2:47 - 3:00??
The thing thats kindof misleading about this music is that to play this stuff you are nowhere close to drugs. These gentlemen dedicate their lives to their craft and it's not for people who like their music spoonfed to them either. Look at Zappa for instance, while he was in europe these guys jammed with him. Zappa dont give just anyone that kind of credit. Not for everyone but damn I love it!!
Sounds like a bias. Come on man, it's not just about playing well and stuff. While I'm not blame and refuse music from people that produce 'songs' without even being able to play, there are common factors that bright music "difficult" to listen, not least what sense it intended to stimulate (not just the stomach, in this case)
There's no only one way to write 'right songs, it depend by many factors.
This music is able to comunicate to me ideas, feelings, impressions. Fair enough.
Well i mean i listen to a wide range of music so it's not like i dont like it because it's too difficult. But i like songs that can give me the shivers or make me think "wow this is amazing." To me this song sounds like a bunch of musicians playing whaever they want the same tempo. The parts dont seem to blend well at all and really isnt that enjoyable for me to listen to
There are so many persons who aren't understanding this music. It might be because you are 2 young or don't have enough music in you to understand it. Well I tell you what I tell the others who calls this music "a bunch of musicians playing whaever they want the same tempo". I say to you:

its so freeform that the melody goes to shit
so you can fuckin pat yourself on the back and say "ooh look what complex and different music i listen to" but complexity does not make it a good song.
Agreed, complexity does not make a good song, I think this is a good song: It also happens to be complex. This is not all that freeform, to me I don't hear that much improvisation: I'm not that familiar with the band though, I don't know. I like improv as well though.
My question though, why be a dick about it? If you don't like this music, fine. If as "far out" as you want to get is Battles, fine. That's not a problem by me. You don't have to tell us it's incorrect to like this.
Well I guess you have a point...there are so many forms of music where some musicians even suggests that the listener is high on some drug to fully understand their work.
I don't think it is the case. However, go to use some kind of drugs if you find it enjoyable in any case, would be just your own choice. And yes, take care to choose the right sound to avoid some bad trip, real musicians don't care that much your own mental hygiene, you know.
@mazxim I truly honestly disagree with that statement.
Many people, both in my own social group as well as more well-known people whom I look up to, have admitted to the benefits of psychedelic experiences. For myself it was mushrooms, other people learned for instance to be more social from mdma, Steve Jobs famously said taking lsd was one of the most important experiences of his life, not to mention all of the music that was inspired by psychedelics..
