Listen to Patty Griffin for instance or Rachel Yamagata or Sara Bereilles or a Fine Frenzy or Emily Bert, etc. etc. Not that hard to find American folk/singer songwriter types all over the indie scene. For a man, look into Ray Lamontagne or Amos Lee
