She really did make this song AMAZING. But that's really not that surprising if you ask me because a. Tori Amos is a bit of a genius when it comes to covers and b. Britney Spears had the best people in the industry writing her songs and music. Not shocking that a very talented artist could do something really great with her songs,
say what you will about britney, but this is a damn amazing song...a piece of pop perfection. and tori shows the dark side of the lyrics to it beautifully.
I think she chose this song because the lyrics are emotionally fucked up and then Britney got really sick and doesn't get a break from the cameras and Tori feels sorry for what she had to go through.
I'm so sick of people bashing Britney Spears honestly she wasn't autotunned in this song and back in the day she sang it live and she co- wrote the song you're all enjoying right now. Honestly just give the girl the respect she deserves.
It's important to note that she used this song as a sort segue into "Maybe California" which she wrote about suicide, spousal abuse, empty nest syndrome and a struggling economy.
@lutalice - you're right. I must have inferred that part from something else entirely. But Tori did say that Maybe California is about maternal suicide and a struggling economy. The song is written from the perspective that she's trying to offer hope to any wife or mother who might be considering suicide.
It really shouldn't surprise anyone that Tori chose to cover this song... She makes a subtle mockery not of Britney Spears, but rather of the fans who bob their heads without really absorbing the lyrics... The song is truly perverse in every way that pop music can be and only Tori's signature style can call attention to that fact. Revisit her cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the picture is complete.
Anytime she does a cover, she really makes me think about the song differently. I think that's what a real artist would do with a song. Love her more and more all the time ~ can't wait for the next round of new stuff!!
Also, to be fair, this song was written by a man and originally intended for one of the popular boy bands at the time so it very-well could have been on Strange Little Girls.
This is what I call making lemonade out of lemons! Wow! I wouldn't watch this vid for so long, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Tori. I just REALLY dislike Britney. So glad I watched. She really did it with feeling. Awesome!
I just posted a version that's the opposite of lindseymero's clip - pretty decent audio with bad, off-frame video. It doesn't have the opening dialog from the robertschrader clip, but the song sounds clear. Just thought I'd add into the mix...
go Tori!!! She makes ANYTHING sound AMAZING!!!

@jenniferxcheck Brit did not co-write ...BOMT. But yeah, the original definitely wasn't autotuned. I don't even think AutoTune was popular in 1999.

Does she not use the sustain petal? I never see her use it and i don't know how she can get the piano to sound like that without using it.

@RevivingRichelle She uses it all the time ... with her left foot.

She generally rocks at covers, here she's ok, but not as good as Travis. I think Travis did the best cover of this song.
mariaradu1 1 year ago
@mariaradu1
Love Travis, but I gotta disagree, her arrangement changes the song in tone and meaning, and gave it this depth I didn't think was possible.

I so had this idea before Tori. I was actually partially depressed and completely amazed when I heard she covered it.
Great minds think alike I guess.
This is miles better than the original; this could have been on Strange Little Girls.
sixthcrusifix 2 years ago
@sixthcrusifix Actually, this couldn't have been on Strange Little Girls—those were all covers originally performed by men.
peterm2686 1 year ago
I know, I'm just saying it's a good enough cover that it deserves to be done in studio and produced on an album.
