  • ive noticed that a lot of these sels oil gauges stay at 3 even though the gas isnt pressed ughh

  • Nice project car. The A/C might be your biggest challenge if it is your evaporator leaking. These cars do not come apart easily.

  • Have you fixed the idle problem?

Got the same on mine when temeratures drop below 32°F.

Maybe it´s the idle control valve. I´m very curious if you fixed that and if yes, how?

  • whats with the bird noise or whatever that is in the background?

  • A bird

  • u stole this car

  • @Primer9 Don't buy one. That's what everyone thinks when you drive one.

  • i bought mine for 1200 its a work in progress

  • I tell you a classic never dies, thats one nice ride, I can't belive you got that for $1000 I can't wait to finish restoring my pops SEL420 he paid $50k back in 86 for it.

  • You have got a really nice car there. Of course some things have to be done but anyway, very nice!

The engine sounds excellent! What fuel economy do you get? I think the 420's is even better than the 300's due to a longer rear exle (2,42 compared to 3.26)

  • it definetley sounds like a transfer bridge. Its composed of plastic and plastic tends to break with age. I would not reccomend installing the part yourself, if you do not know how. The headliner for your car is not cheap. I would find a mechanic who is experienced and has done the job before. Its a very difficult job

  • I own a '87 420 SEL that I restored. Its a great project, does the motor still work for the sun roof? If it does, the transfer bridge is probably broken

  • The sunroof motor does work and it will pop up about half way. I can see broken plastic when it it poped up. If I try to slide it back it just makes a clicking noise and doesn't move.

  • nice! V8 :)

  • Get a K&N air filter in it Save's alot of of cas in these 420's my dad has one and it performs great Do you likve in california by any chance

  • No, I do not live in California. I was planning on getting an intake from a 560sel because it has 2 air ducts going into the air cleaner instead of the 1 duct that these 420's have. Im getting 21mpg already which isnt to bad for this big ole thing ecspecialy considering my driving style. I expect it to improve once I replace the spark plugs, fix the idle control and fix the left front brake caliper that isnt opening all the way.

  • yeah we're gettin a 560 intake on my dad's 420SEL too and it's all tuned right with a K&N filter and does 28MPG on the freeway it's amazing

  • hrmnnn....funny, my front brake caliper didnt open all the way either....odd....replace it....simple...

  • NO do not get a K&N, you throw off the sensors!!!

  • BUll these old benzes don't have all those stupid sensors, We have them in all of our mercedes and they work great, I take it you're just saying this from what u've heard instead of experience

  • NO, this engine has a machanical airflow sensor, without any electronics! it has a KE-jetronic.

  • Be sure to replace both front and rear flex discs as they tend to crack and will leave you stranded if they break. Replace all the rubber fuel lines and use proper clamps (not the worm-gear type you find at the hardware store). If the CV boots are cracked and dry replace them as well with fresh grease.
