  • they burn ridiculous amounts of fuel with vtol

  • how old are thay?? saw black smoke..

  • @psvwoodshoven How about the Brits inventing the jet engine to start with??!

  • @coolsdon

    Germans invented the jet engine.

  • @crazynaska Er really?...Try telling that to Frank Whittle,he was knighted for it!!!!!

  • @coolsdon Actually, Dr Hans Von Ohain and Frank Whittle both independently developed the jet engine.

  • ottimo modo per pulire la pista..

  • When was this?

  • that is an assload of chinooks at the end of the deck!

  • water cooled turbines only allow the jet to hover for about 1-2 mins

  • sexyyy sona of bitch...........wowww

  • Our carriers have a longer flight deck hence no need for the upward roll:))

  • @robin12491

The "Upward Roll" isn't on UK carriers because they are shorter than US carriers. It is there because it is more fuel efficient for the air craft on take off, and at the same time quicker to get airborne than zooming down a long deck.

    Laters.

  • gota love da navy and air force

  • This is on board my old ship the USS ESSEX LHD2

  • Takes me back. Good times.

  • Oh, How cool is that !!!!!!!!!

  • How many knots they doing when they clear the deck?

How many knots of wind created by carrier and the actual wind over the deck?

  • @ seajist - Its a V/STOL (Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing)

  • On ship it is easier to do a running takeoff than a vertical. The vertical really messes up the deck.

  • it uses less fuel to use a short take-off giving them longer patrol times etc ..

  • @lionsforlyons It's LHD2, that's the 2nd Landing Helocopter Deck made...the Wasp is the 1st one and i lived on it for 6 Months when we Marines went to Bosina in 93

  • They might not be the fastest but they sure are versatile.

  • harrier can´t takeoff vertically with to much weight

  • so fucking cool

  • Great way to get all the water off your ships deck and to dry if off.

  • I understand that it is a rather small aircraft carrier, given that the Brits designed and installed the ramp that would heave the Harrier airward with minimal speed and deck-bourne distance? Indeed, the Vertical Take-Off and Landing principal is being incorporated into the super-sonic Fighters and Interceptors of the future. You are quite right lionsforlyons, it certainly is an unconventional aircraft carrier! Best wishes.

  • im pretty sure its an amphibious assult ship

  • Squirrel9901 is the man fianlly a person who think we brits own americans, hes smart not like the other us retards

  • I don't understand this rivalry. We speak the same language, we would have been British if you weren't under the rule of an asshole, and we've been good friends for over 100 years. This is why world peace is retarded. :/

  • fuck that would be scary to watch

  • yea watching these take off in person is bad ass really loud and alot of tourqe

    QM

    Uss Essex

  • Those workers standing around must have very healthy lungs!

  • Nice!!!!!

  • can harriers not take off from hovering?

  • They can, it depends how much it weighs with its fuel and ammo. If its thrust to weight ratio is better than 1:1, then it can take off vertically.

  • yes of corse they can

  • Yes, but it uses a shit load of fuel!

  • You obviously don't know alot, it uses the same ammount of fuel as flying the plane normally, the only reason you cannot do it forever is because eventually the engines overheat. Different coolants can be used to cool the engines and get longer hover times however.

  • It depends on their weight for that flight.

  • They can but it's not good for the engines. They can only hover for 90 seconds, any longer the engines overheat and fail, and its not likely they can get high enough by that time to transfer from the hover to flying speed. Plus its safer on an aircraft carrier.

  • nice

  • can harrier jets fly faster than other jets because of extra high thrust they put out?

  • Negative.

  • how do you know this? are you qualified to answer this question?

  • Well I'm not a fighter pilot but I have read that the Harrier's top speed is not as fast as most of the other fighter jets. Instead of spending all this time questioning me why don't you just look it up online?

  • Comment removed

  • cause it's easier to ask you, then you look it up, and let me know what you find. lol thank you by the way

  • Correct..im currently in the process of flying for the USMC,and the Harrier is not ment for speed.

  • @RyanHedlund99 The Harrier can go supersonic in a dive. Speed is not the object of the Harrier. It's a close support aircraft designed to operate where there is no runway. In the Falklands war when being chased by an Argentinian Mirage a pure supersonic fighter. The pilot of a Harrier pointed his exhaust nozzles forward the Harrier came to a stop, the Mirage flew by, and was shot down by a missile from the almost stationary Harrier.

  • @RyanHedlund99

you are right, harrier is a fucked up plane, its oversteered, its slow, its ugly, but its an interesting plane

  • @RyanHedlund99 Typical CoD cunt who thinks the Harrier is a fighter and thinks it's all about speed. You want fucking air superiority, go fly a fucking McDonnel Douglas F-15 Eagle. They're from the same manufacturing company and pertorm vastly different roles. The Harrier is a ground attack aircraft, specialising in CAS missions, and at rare times, Interdiction. Their AIM-9 Sidewinder Short range air to air missiles mounted on the wingtip hardpoints are only for self defence.

  • @lb8068 well there is the sea harrier, which operated by RN till '06, they were designed for fleet defense and had radar and AMRAAM capability. They were supposed to be air superiority fighters. but weren't supersonic

  • Wouldn't it be better to have ski-jumps on these ships, so the harriers can carry more or lose less fuel taking off? Maybe even some Sea King AEW helicopters and you even have another aircraft carrier.

  • sweet video man. those jets were puttin out alot of thrust.

  • It dont use that much fuel on take off it can take off do a mission without refueling mid air refueling is done to extend its ranger and linger time.

  • I think i know what to tell my rents to get me for my birthday :D

  • wait like... when they take off were do they go? they go like WAY out there and drop bombs and stuff right?

  • After they take off they re-fuel because they use a large amount of fuel during take off.

  • oh thnx!

  • Whoooaa, listen to those jets purr........!

  • yeah..sound briliant..

  • i love Harrier !

  • why dont these things take off vertically? i thought they could

  • They can. It eats up a lot of gas and it requires more maintenance on the engine.

  • They can , but it takes a lot of fuel. British aircraft carriers have a ramp at the end of the flight deck to help get the Harrier airborne but the aircraft normally land vertically. As there are only a few small carriers in the fleet they just have the harrier aboard.

  • they do take of vertically, its just not posted here. thats all...

  • they can but not with a full load of fuel, so they do a short take off instead. If they are full it is too heavy to take off straight up.

  • @seajist

taking off vertically takes up a ridiculous amount of fuel. Its only really used in tactical situations where a runway/carrier is not available to the pilots.

  • @UncappingBadger yes indeed

  • @seajist Vertical takeoff is possible, but it eats fuel like crazy - short takeoffs may not be as sexy, but they save fuel which give the Harrier greater legs.

  • @seajist fuel.

  • @seajist

They do not take off vertically because it consumes alot of fuel.

    It's possible... But not convinient.

  • @seajist They can lift of vertically, but this dramatically decreases the payload they are able to lift, so they prefer to do it the conventional way.

  • Comment removed

  • @seajist It wastes fuel (and coolant as well, if I remember correctly) to take off vertically unless they have to.

  • @seajist they can but they can only do it when they are lightweight eg no weapons or large amounts of fuel

  • @seajist The reason they don't take off vertically is to save fuel. When the jets return they usually land vertically as the mission is over, and they can refuel.

  • @seajist

a heck of a lot more fuel to take off vertically. if they can take off on a runway, they go for that

  • @fuckyiuyiu hey faggot, you know how many fucking retards have already answered this question? fucking thousands. so FUCK YOU

  • @seajist

    you're welcome :-)

  • @seajist They can take off vertically, but it is much more efficient this way. Safer too.

  • @seajist

It's just to keep the flight deck in better shape. Why take of vertically with extreme heat applied to the deck which causes even more tear to it.

  • @seajist I think it takes more fuel to do so than to run for a little bit and let the wings help lift the plane.

  • @seajist it would be a waste of fuel to take off vertically

  • @seajist takes more gas to do VTOL

  • @seajist They can, but it's a total waste of fuel when you have a runway suitable for short take offs. It's not all about "LOOKING KEWL".

  • beautiful

  • remember watching that view from vultures row on the Essex.. I was onboard from Apr 13 93 till Apr 13 98 when she was out of San Diego.. DS3/DS2 working on JOTS/NTCS-A/JMCIS out of flag edp.. made some good friends onboard and miss that ship..

  • ok then, let's begin, britain designed, football (soccer if ur american), rugby, ping-pong, cricket, hockey, rounders (baseball in the u.s. except its a mens game over there) ok enough sports we invented most of them, steam engine, telephone, fax machine, internal combustion engine, JET engine (topical), sewing machine, electric light bulb, periodic table, pencillin, radar locating of aircraft, submarine, television, world wide web, yes the vacuum cleaner, viagra and even crosswords !

  • Shut up, or please tell sheepgoat64 to shut up

  • That was so cool.

  • WHAT NO SKI JUMP!

  • wow

  • HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AUSOME

  • my brother was on the Essex up till he went to Afghanastan and was attached to an army Unit. He, a navy Petty officer second class, got an army commendation for his service he was a cryptogtaphy and computer fixer.

His name is Adam Lester if anyone knows him

  • U.S. Navy does not use ramp at end like the Britons? Any reason? Would appear safer to have the ramp....

  • actually there is one like a net..but u cant really see it..its underneath the flight deck..

  • @jewishretard well, I thought the U.S uses the catapult system unlike the Britons, so they dont need a ramp, the Britons would fall off when they didnt have the ramp, their speed is to low to have them flying. That's what i've been told, but i dont know for sure

  • ive seen some take of in like 3 seconds whats witht he delay in these ones?

  • coz u dun know how it works..u can just start the engine & take off..there are certain procedures n' rules for everything in the navy..

  • ryanazzpoardi1 is probably thinking of catapult launches. Cool video, thanks for sharing it.

  • not to mention everything else that has to do with flying in the country.

  • umm, try explaining it to the guy who is trying to learn?

these are taking off slower than most of the ones you have seen because these do not have the hooks attached under them, in alot of aircraft carriers they are shot out like a massive slingshot from a hook underneath the aircraft.

  • so noisy

  • "hey buddy did you read ? NO SMOKING !!" ^^

  • Sensational Thanks for posting it.

  • ALL OF YOU ARE STUPID MORONS!!!

  • God im so proud of being an American. Nice take-off

  • So am I. But it has nothing to do with planes, ships, bombs, or how much money we can throw at the military. Do you know what I mean?

  • And isn't there something else that questions your pride of being american ? uh ?

  • nope

  • british designed plane though, teehee.

  • not too bad for a country with the population size of california alone !! rah rah indeed.

  • Ah well, the story of the harrier is simple, first the British created the hawker kestral, then the yanks gave it a carbon fibre wing and then joint designed the harrier. British design with American tweaking. Though not here for arguments but at least we owned America lol sorry had to say that. I had the pleasure of serving with the yanks in the gulf back in 2003 and made some good mates there.

  • Ok good then, now shut up. Or at least do me a favour by telling psvwoodshoven below you to shut up instead

  • Belt up idiot.

  • Good on ya, ya Brit, fucking owned those americans, you even invented Australia as it is today. Lol

  • squirrel is the man

  • thats right dude..

  • Man, I remember they'd take off right above the DC shop and practically shake everything off the shelves.

  • Yup. 1991-1995. S-7 Division (Data Processing) LPO from PreCom through first deployment.

  • Thanks for the video. Brings back memories to this Essex (LHD-2) Plankowner.

  • oh really..?? were u in Stressex..?? lol..

  • The good old harrier AV 8B

  • thankx 4 the comment..

  • so beautiful
