  • what a great voice - take a lesson X factor losers!!!

  • Oh fabulous much better than all this dance and bass that is sicked from radio1 today

  • We saw him in concert on this tour and he was fantastic. Something I'll remember as long as I live. He also sat outside and signed every autograph for a huge queue of people and didn't leave 'tll he'd finished. The guy was a legend. Sadly missed. Why do people have to mock? Pathetic.

  • An absolute fabulous talent sadly no longer with us. To all those who have posted mocking comments , please take on board Howard was 74 when he appeared on this show and was still a fabulous singer. He came from a generation where you had to have serious ability in order to become a success. He gave us all these wonderful musicals ....boy could he sing and tell a story at the same time.......a joy to watch and a rare talent unlikely to be rivalled !

  • @Reluctant5 It's not him though, it's the old man / old lady that make love to the preacher man or wreck the county jail.

  • I haven't heard the male version of this in decades. Thanks for posting it.

  • How about Charlene wrecking the county jail, that wouldbe an image! ;-)

  • I just love this...Thanks!!

  • still not manly

  • i would of loved to have seen this sooner. i realy think howard keel is a brill actor he may look like any old actor but he plays his parts fantastic.

    big fan lve...

  • I love him, he is wonderful

  • No one sings it as well as Howard Keel does.

  • Good Lord what has he done to "I've never been me"?

  • Yes, it's sad some learn too late that........"only LOVE can set people free "......

  • A cravat tucked inside his collar?? How absolutely quaint! And Asia Minor? Oh, well, it rhymed.

  • Actually...the male lyrics were the original ones. The writer changed them to fit a female perspective when they needed a song quickly for Charlene to sing. :3

  • @Grendachan True..

  • What were these producers thinking when they decided, "Hey lets have Howard Keel sing 'Never Been to Me', & change all the words around, so he can sing it!: Psychologically it would have been much more interesting if they had just kept the words, changed "lady" to "Mister" and Mr. Keel just went with it!! Why not have him sing, "I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun" & "I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free"! Just a thought.....

  • @drbuzzmann I don't mean insult, but your posting is made out of ignorance. The ignorance is understandable, as scant few people know the "history" of this tune. The song was originally penned for a man to sing. The song lyrics were rewritten by Ron Miller for a woman to sing when he recognized that Charlene would be the ultimate performer for a song with such a theme.

  • Just Beautiful! Great voice

  • The depth in his voice.....I just love listening to him sing...this is not his best choice.....but there is not much he can not sing.....

  • My mistake... it's not the Generation game, Brucie (and Howard for that matter ) is wearing the wrong syrup for it to be that early... MY guess is that it is some sort of pilot episode of Play your cards right..." Now, Give us twirl Anthea my love"

  • I don't remember that episode of The generation game.... I wonder how the contestants got on with singing that and how many points did Howard give them....... "Alright my love"

  • This clip was not from the 'Generation Game', but from a short-lived series of chat shows hosted by Bruce Forsyth on the BBC.

  • Damn he still has a fine voice doesn't he. Brilliant. Much better than that piece of crap by Charlene.

  • what do you mean his day ? he makes my heart sing always xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • uh...didn't you hear?

  • This is wonderful, it seems vaguely familiar, but it will hereafter be very much familiar to me!! This has become my mission in life, to encourage young people to think ahead 50 years, maek the right moves, have fun but still think of the future. Thanks so much for uploading! 5*

  • It is very true. The original lyrics were written from a male perspective, presumedly for a man to record. Ron Miller rewrote the lyrics for a woman, and the rest is history. I have never known of the original (male) version to have ever been recorded for popular release.

  • One of my colleagues tends to liken information on Wikipedia to a public toilet--"it may be perfectly fine...but you never really know, do you?"

However, I bought the sheet music for the song when it was re-released in 1982, and the male lyrics were included.

  • Well, the song was written by Ron Miller, and then the lyrice were rewrote to fit a female point of view. Charlene was a new signing for motown at that time and the recordcompany wanted a hit material song written for her and Miller choose this song. The song in it`s original format has not been released on motown sofar and probably never will.

And why ask patrick for proof, either you study musical histroy or you use google, bot gives you the answer

  • I'm madly in love with a woman

who's twice my weight! Sing it!

  • He handled that A LOT better than I expected. Props to you, Howard.
