What these sugar mills do is provide jobs and opportunities for hatian and dominican workers. Most mills in other countries don't use human labor to cut sugar cane, instead they use machinery, meaning less people needed to work, meaning less jobs. Is that what you want?

My friend owns a construction business in the DR. He says the same thing to justify paying Haitians what he does. The sad part is that he could literally double their pay and it would still be cheaper than using mechanical labor. The really sad part is that he COULD pay them, but he chooses not to. My girlfriend is from their and currently lives there and sees this everyday, and it's not just a single example. The biggest advocates of capitalism are also the biggest abusers.

Only in Santo Domingo will you find a bottle of coke for sale on a street corner for 5 cents. Now in resort areas yes it is 50 pesos. Not in town. For 20 US Dollars a full tour of Dominican Republic and a bottle of rum. You need to go out more next time your in Dominican Republic and not by the resort or tourist trap areas they do overprice by some 250%.

Salasin, remember something. In the bateyes not only haitians are there, dominicans and people from other caribbea islands also work there under the same conditions. So it is not like they are working under those conditions just because they are haitians, they are working under those conditions because everybody in that batey works like that. Better conditions are always welcome, but keep in mind this is not a rich country, countries in the same economic page of DR are not that different.
Having said that. The Dominican Republic does have labor laws, and those who violate them should be prosecuted. they get paid depending how much they cut, their paycheck includes all three meals with water, they get papers to live legally in dominican republic, and no one forces them to work there. What these sugar mills do is provide jobs and opportunities for hatian and dominican workers. Most mills in other countries don't use human labor to cut sugar cane, instead they use machinery, meaning less people needed to work, meaning less jobs. Is that what you want?

The sad part is that he could literally double their pay and it would still be cheaper than using mechanical labor. The really sad part is that he COULD pay them, but he chooses not to. My girlfriend is from their and currently lives there and sees this everyday, and it's not just a single example. The biggest advocates of capitalism are also the biggest abusers.

Only in Santo Domingo will you find a bottle of coke for sale on a street corner for 5 cents. Now in resort areas yes it is 50 pesos. Not in town. For 20 US Dollars a full tour of Dominican Republic and a bottle of rum. You need to go out more next time your in Dominican Republic and not by the resort or tourist trap areas they do overprice by some 250%.

So it is not like they are working under those conditions just because they are haitians, they are working under those conditions because everybody in that batey works like that. Better conditions are always welcome, but keep in mind this is not a rich country, countries in the same economic page of DR are not that different.

Having said that. The Dominican Republic does have labor laws, and those who violate them should be prosecuted. Furthermore, a child born in the DR is Dominican, irrespective of his parentage and deserves all rights of a Dominican. If he is a cost on society, bill the land owners who chose to exploit the parents. He assumed the risks. Same goes for anyone abducted, coerced, or tricked into work he had not bargained for, especially when that worker has no means to return to his prior position.

This is just evil.....plain and simple. Human beings have lost touch with their conscience. Slavery should have been over centuries ago...therefor by law these workers should be paid much more for this type of work. It is time for things to change on this earth.

There is no slavery in DR, this is just cheap labour that haitians and DOMINICANS work in. Why? Because there is no better offer for people that have no other skill that can help them get better jobs. This is not the USA, this is not France, we cant give them more money than that (althought that is more money than what they could earn in Haiti ). If you want to help, tell your goverment to offer them better jobs in your country, that would be very cool.

By law domincans and any other foreign worker earn the same salary (check the info before you talk Hatheru). 3)Now if you want to see real slavery, go check on Restaveks: 400,000 kids most not older than 10...Those kids are usually sexually, phisically and mentally abuse by their masters...This has existed since the foundation of Haiti and nobody has ever done anything about it...Do people care? seems not enough, this would have been stop decades ago.
