I'm a culture fanatic. I love to study different cultures, why is a woman's belly sacred? i read that in books about India, and belly dancing is sacred... may i ask?

Sorry if you've answered this question millions of times before, but I've seen some of your more recent stuff and would just like to ask- how frequently do you belly dance and how long did it take you to get as good as you are now? I am terrible at any kind of dance but have been considering belly dancing for over 2 years now...
@Portubella12458 Dont worry. I'm always glad to reply...I started playing around with bellydance when i was 17. But only got serious just a few years back. Its not the amount of time that matters...but dedication. Just shimmying in front of the mirror can make you much better. Your question is great...i have been thinking of posting a video on how to improve dance in a short period of time. Thanks for inspiring me. I'll send you a message when i have uploaded it. It will benefit many dancers.

there no REAL shimmy. theres so many different kinds. an bending the knees is def one of them. a shimmer shimmy in the one where you dont bend your knees at all =) i cant do that one yet.

start slow and build the speed up. first get to now the move. And then speed it up. A year ago i counded shimmy and now i shimmy and do the disses at the sime time!
i bellydance and can do almost everything well except shimmies! ive always struggled. honestly i can do them soo much better thanks to this video! you rock keep it up!
p.s. one thing really helpful for bellydance vids is to show ur feet movement. so lowere the cam a lil next time!

The hip shimmy is mainly from the movement of your thigh muscles. The back of your thigh muscles. When you shimmy, try to feel the vibrations in the back of your thigh. Then you r doing right. I hope this helps

I was told that it'd be better to have bum fat for belly dancing. It is better for women with a bit of meat on them to do belly dancing. Basically not stick thin, belly dancing needs a belly :p

1st you can try walking around and do a slow shoulder shimmy...as you get this...start doing a faster shimmy as you walk...sooner or later u will be able to do it :)

Hmm, your hips dont have to move so much. it becomes like a vibrating movement. Try im improving your posture if you find your legs arent positioned properly. But i am not too sure what you mean by ur left leg is longer. Check if your posture is correct. n try shimmying

Hi. Sorry 4 late reply. Sliding your ribs is the same as sliding your hips. Isolate your ribs. Try to stand in front of a mirror and focus. Practise sliding everyday. You will get the hang of it. Some ppl make the mistake of mving sholuders. Its nt the shoulders but the ribs. Focusing helps

Yes the more the jiggles the better. N shimmies develop your muscles too. Remember its not really in the knees moving back and forth. Tighten your butt muscles and shimmy. Try putting your hand at the back of your thigh and see if you can feel your muscle moving. If its moving then you are correct! :)
Thank you Daniel. I find my shimmies more strong when i tighten my butt and shimmy. Its also good to develop your muscles around your thighs. I use the cycling machines n cross trainers at the gym. It makes your shimmies more smooth and increase your stamina.

Thank you so much Daniel. I believe as long as we are passionate abt this art, we can really train for it. I do train with weights on my hip as well. Like those weight belts. That has improved my dancing alot more and help me identify muscles. But you have to be quite intermediate to try that. If nt it might cos injury. N when u feel pain, stop immediately. It means you are doing smtg wrong. Some dancers are against weights...and some dancers claim it helps. To me, i find it very useful.
i should try one of those they sound really cool to what do these weights look like and i also believe if we can be passionate then we will be famous hehe i hope we can be famous like rachel brice that would be cool your a great bellydancer with lots of passion and really care about the art what i also admire is that you are honest in what you say about your videos thank you for helping improve better cause some stuff that you showed in your videos i didnt know much about
You are very kind Daniel. I believe anytg is possible as long as you set your heart and mind to it. U can even become better than any star. I dont have the bellydance weight belt. Im too poor for it. So i bought a scuba diving weight belt, and 2 pounds of weight on each side of my hip.
It cost me a total of 30 bucks. It shld be cheaper in ur country. Start off with smaller weights until your hip is strong enough. Make sure the weights are distributed EVENLY. Maybe i will put up a video of me practising wid weights. Some exercises i do are hip circles, inner hip circles, figure 8's in and out, mayas, figure 8 with feet stable on the floor (not on heels) and belly rolls and undulations.But i suggest anyone to learn the proper method of doing it widout weights
...so they wont harm any muscles with weights on. I haf a class teacher who corrects me, so in a way i am safe..n i knoe that even if i practise wid weights im nt harming maself. Just make sure you are ready 4 it. Ur hips and health is most important!
i think it would help if you made a video please do if you can because like you said others might want to try but they can hurt themselves if they don't know what their doing
You're on the right track. That is how you do a shimmy but hopping is a big no no and that is what you seem to be doing. When you hop it takes away the isolation from the hips and makes the move look uncontrolled. Stand in from of a mirror and pretend there is a line above your head or ask a friend to put their hand a tiny ways above your head and do the same moves. You'll see what I mean. Another great way to do this is by practicing with a book on your head. It helps you not to bounce.
If its a normal shimmy, your weight should be evenly distributed on the balls of the feet. You stand flat on the floor. In a turkish shimmy, you tend to stand on your toes.
You are great with that rib movement, i´m so silly, and y can´t do that or i need more practice...Could you please explain how to do the ondulations, it´s really difficult to me. Thanks, you are really good.

For the real shimmy you don't bend the knees
you only have to move your hips by lifting your body up.

you can shimmy with your knees. that is a regular more controlled shimmy. you can shimmy to the beat of music.
there is also a shimmy called the glute shimmy. this is when you alternate squeezing/flexing your right and left butt muscles.
different areas and cultures use different kinds of shimmies!

That is an egyptian shimmy if im right. There are different kinds of shimmy. Some we use knees...some we dont :)

Hi. Sorry 4 late reply. Sliding your ribs is the same as sliding your hips. Isolate your ribs. Try to stand in front of a mirror and focus. Practise sliding everyday. You will get the hang of it. Some ppl make the mistake of mving sholuders. Its nt the shoulders but the ribs. Focusing helps

The weights can hit against ur hip while vibrating...but ive tried it b4...its nt really painful or anytg like ppl scared me...im just a lil cautious

Yes thats correct. Your stomach has to jiggle. Lol and you are not fat. Shimmies makes your stomach jiggle and thats absolutely normal!

Yes the more the jiggles the better. N shimmies develop your muscles too. Remember its not really in the knees moving back and forth. Tighten your butt muscles and shimmy. Try putting your hand at the back of your thigh and see if you can feel your muscle moving. If its moving then you are correct! :)

Thank you Daniel. I find my shimmies more strong when i tighten my butt and shimmy. Its also good to develop your muscles around your thighs. I use the cycling machines n cross trainers at the gym. It makes your shimmies more smooth and increase your stamina.

Thank you so much Daniel. I believe as long as we are passionate abt this art, we can really train for it. I do train with weights on my hip as well. Like those weight belts. That has improved my dancing alot more and help me identify muscles. But you have to be quite intermediate to try that. If nt it might cos injury. N when u feel pain, stop immediately. It means you are doing smtg wrong. Some dancers are against weights...and some dancers claim it helps. To me, i find it very useful.

You are very kind Daniel. I believe anytg is possible as long as you set your heart and mind to it. U can even become better than any star. I dont have the bellydance weight belt. Im too poor for it. So i bought a scuba diving weight belt, and 2 pounds of weight on each side of my hip.

It cost me a total of 30 bucks. It shld be cheaper in ur country. Start off with smaller weights until your hip is strong enough. Make sure the weights are distributed EVENLY. Maybe i will put up a video of me practising wid weights. Some exercises i do are hip circles, inner hip circles, figure 8's in and out, mayas, figure 8 with feet stable on the floor (not on heels) and belly rolls and undulations.But i suggest anyone to learn the proper method of doing it widout weights

...so they wont harm any muscles with weights on. I haf a class teacher who corrects me, so in a way i am safe..n i knoe that even if i practise wid weights im nt harming maself. Just make sure you are ready 4 it. Ur hips and health is most important!

You're on the right track. That is how you do a shimmy but hopping is a big no no and that is what you seem to be doing. When you hop it takes away the isolation from the hips and makes the move look uncontrolled. Stand in from of a mirror and pretend there is a line above your head or ask a friend to put their hand a tiny ways above your head and do the same moves. You'll see what I mean. Another great way to do this is by practicing with a book on your head. It helps you not to bounce.

If its a normal shimmy, your weight should be evenly distributed on the balls of the feet. You stand flat on the floor. In a turkish shimmy, you tend to stand on your toes.

When you stand on your toes, its called a turkish shimmy. When you stand flat its called egyptian shimmy. Usually i do both. When i travel around, and look unnaturally a lil taller, then im doing turkish. But usually i like doing egyptian shimmy, the one which u stand flat
