people usually die from surfing by hitting there head on razor sharp reef or waves are too powerful and it holds them down. and thats not the only hazard you have to worry when your out in the ocean. im pretty sure kayaking has no sharks lurking around the rivers...lol and too me seeing a shark while surfing is one of the scariest feelings, surfing > kayaking. surfing ftw

True, but a 5 foot wave in a river will annihilate a kayak, whereas you need about 5 times the size of an ocean wave to get anywhere near the same force.

Kayaking is fu#@ing dangerous, and a lot of people are getting killed because they do not realise it.

DUDE!! 5x5 is 25 feet, a 25 foot wave CAN EASILY KILL YOU! Ever heard of tsunami destroying entire cities?? Yeah, these big waves are basically tsunami, so if you think there isn't TREMENDOUS force in those waves you've gone completely WACKO.

The dangerous thing about kayaking is more the rocks than anything.

A lot more kayakers being killed than surfers. A 4 foot wave in a river can crush your hardened plastic kayak against a rock and drown you, and lucky you had a helmet on or you would have been brained already. A 4 foot wave on the ocean will bang you up at best on the ocean. Never seen a surfer wear a helmet, nor a life-jacket often.
