could you make a tutorial on how to actual be a director? as far as directing your actors, how direct you need to be, how prepared you need to be vs when it's ok to practice/try out different camera angles or actions on set with everyone there, what reasonable expectations are for your workers, etc. great videos, thanks for posting.
If yo are interested in photograph ,you can browse my channel ,wishi you like it and sub it .welcome to share the redources with each other.Thank you very much.
I feel bad for that kid who had to stand out in the snow all that time. Very informative and helpful video though. However, it'd be good if you could work on not stuttering so much while explaining.
Extremely awsome camera! in the extereme close up shot through the boys' eyes I can see you tom antos holding the camera with other 2 guys and behind you there is a car!!!!! that's just awsome!!!!
Excellent video, just what i was looking for! Clear and concise explanations, coupled with some example footage, it gets across really well. Thanks for sharing!
I accidentally stumbled upon these videos when searching for something else. And I'm glad I did! Thanks for the awesome and informational videos, polcan99, I feel so inspired now! :-D
@dodgesxt Easiest way is having two cameras; however, the other option is to film the scene from one angle completely and then switch to the other angle and splice them together in post production.

Please please answer me. I've bought the most expensive camera I could afford, a canon g10, it does not have interchangable lenses however. so, I was wondering, since I don't have the luxury of different lenses, can I achieve pretty much the same effects by simply zooming in and out with the optical zoom? is that the only thing I can do to achieve different perspectives, when not having interchangable lenses to work with or am I missing something?
@Toemta yup...zooming in is the same as changing out lenses... you're changing the focal lenght . The only thing that's better about interchangable lenses is that they're usualy faster, have better focusing abalitles etc. but you can still get same effects if you avoid the weaknesses of your built in lens.
@polcan99 *relieved* good.. I was worried I wouldn't be able to do these things with a semi pro consumer camcorder. Thanks a lot for answering, and thank you for these tutorials! I have an idea for a tutorial for you, the use of soundtrack music in scenes, not songs, but score. where to use what and what their effects are. I saw a cool tutorial on that on the dvd set for 24, can't remember the season, it was very educational.
@OCUBOX you... check out my channel... i got new videos every week or every 2 weeks. Im adding two more this week. On my main channel and a tutorial on my second channel TomAntosFilms
Awesome video tutorials. I just purchased a canon 7d. And I was wondering how do you extend the memory. I have an 8gig and when I shoot 1080p it only last for ruffle 30min. Can I attach a external hard drive? Thanks for the videos they have been very helpful to me.
@Layziel No hardrive connection as far as I know. I just simply buy more memory cards swap them as needed. I own 6 16gig cards which is more than enough for a day of shooting.
Great work tom me and my friend have been following your tutorial for about a year now...this is very informative we will be purchasing ur dvd just after we recover from the holiday spending!
One question. on some scenes in movie making we would want everything to be in focus. Or pretty close to it...is there a specific lens that can achieve this on the 5d mark ii? We have adjusted apetures and things like that but its still not the look we want. so far we have only seen this possble with film
@GyzelFilmz Yeah. u can control the DOF using 3 things... Apareture, distance to subject and lens size. For deeper DOF close the aperature as much as you can... stand as far as you can from the subject as you can and then also use the widest lens you have. I will be posting a tutorial with examples of that the following week.
what did you put the settings for the 7d's ISO and the in camera sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone? do you try to go for a flat image when capturing video?
@tosb38 Yes, I have my own custom preset. But in general I use sharpness half way down. Contrast all the way down. Saturation one notch above the middle and color tone I leave in the middle. I use that preset when I shoot most quick projects where I can't control the lighting. If Im doing something I've planned for then I do a custom preset that looks best in that scenario.
@lacamaradetodd If you have a really good and fast zoom lens then it doesnt matter. But usualy prime lenses such as 16, 50 and 100mm are faster and sharper then zooms
@sandalinalang13 LOL... no, he loves the snow. Right after we finished filming this he went running around with his friends for another hour in the cold. He was just getting bored of standing there infront of the camera for 10 min :)
@polcan99 cool. thanks about the vid anyway. i liked it. btw , i've never been in a snow, i always wanted to feel what it feels like :) just saying, merry christmas polcan99 :)
@ZicoSebastian I used the 7D as well! For some shots I used the kit lens that came with it. 16-135mm and a few other Nikon primes that I attach using a $10 adapter from ebay. I used a nikon 50mmf1.8 ,100mmf2.8 and 300mmf4.5
@uglyrhinodotcom DSLR allow for a shallow DOF which is a creative choice needed when making films. But traditional video cameras have better recording formats, audio solutions etc. All depends on what camera you want to get. One thing I would never buy a camera for is the auto focus... cuz you should never be relying on autofocus in film production. Always focus manualy. Autofocus is only good for home videos or some TV journalist work.
I love that you have explained there are no rules to film. In university they used to tell me there were rules, it really put me off university and lowered my opinion of my tutors.
@NakedJKid Yup... no rules, just some guidelines to keep in mind as you experiment. Saying there are rules in films is also bad cuz it tends to restrict begginer filmmakers from experimenting as they develop their style. If you don't experiment you don't learn. So do whatever you feel like, but then judge your work honestly and decide what works what doesn't. And if it doesnt then why? and maybe how u can make it work.
@Smoogle In this case I had an assistant who was holding an umbrella over the camera. You can actually see us and the umbrella in the reflection of the eyes at 1:32 :) but normally I would just use a towel or a scarf over my camera. Specially since the Canon 7D can take a lot of beating. If it was a camera that can't handle moisture as well, then I would put a plastic bag over the camera and cut a hole out for the lens... like I did years ago when filming in a rain forest.
