Ti spiego subito perché penso che Siragusa dovrebbe astenersi dal Rossini Serio: dovrebbe astenervisi per limiti vocali e tecnici; i primi riguardano gli acuti, che se presi di forza sembrano punture di spillo; i secondi riguardano una coloratura buona, ma non trascnedentale, e soprattutto non di forza. Resta il fatto che a me Siragusa piace. Ma se tui ascolti il suo Ilo della Zelmira, beh, paragonato a Blake letteralmente sparisce.

i wouldnt just credit a good upper register for this, think how well he's carrying his voice through the room, so much volume and color, besides this being a live performance he still finishes the phrase with only an eyebrow out of place;) AND picks himself straight up making it look easy..
Many tenors have good upper registers (Pavarotti, Kunde, Kraus, Gedda, Florez, Etc.) but few will manage to sing long 2 octave passages evenly and without a hint of running out of breath as Blake did. Others may do this in the studio, after several takes, but not live. Just watch Florez in a live performance.

I remember watching this when it came out - I thought my jaw would hit the floor when I heard that passage. And yeah the passaggii are all even - unbelievable.
In 2005 I went to Lisbon to see Florez in La Donna del Lago. When I arrived at the theatre Florez was replaced because is was not feeling well. Replaced by Rockwell Blake. It was one of the best experiences in opera. Today I thank God for that replacement. Bravo Rockwell...
I've listened Flórez since he started his career and I've seen him in Valencia. Indeed, He has excellent technics and top notes with very good quality. But Blake is really a miracle, He combines sweet voice and canto di bravura with atonishing facility. I know there are many people who prefeer the beautiful voice of Flórez but I think Blake is the best rossinian tenor of the century. Each phrase, each word is full of meaning and his fiato is better (very much better) than Juan Diego's.
Florez is just as good as Rockwell Blake so is Maxim Mironov, to bonisolli as well, Juan Diego Florez has sung this and recorded it you should listen to it.

China may have a lot of things but tenors of Rockwell Blake's facility and control--not to mention his phenomenal breath-holding capacity--are few and far between. One must never forget that it takes enormous cardio-vascular output to produce the majority of the arias that build and grow every singer's repertoire and reputation. Only a very strong physiology can contribute the energy and power needed to just take one high C in full voice. Few, in the world, ever accomplish this.
I should have also added, this voice is bigger than Florez', and Chris Merritt might have had this kind of technique and power at first, but he ruined his voice and wound up with something very ugly
This voice is one you either love or hate. BUT, that being said, you have to admire what he does with it. It's not a beautiful voice by any means, but his agility and technique are remarkable. I do think it's unfair to compare him with Florez. They are two different voices. Lots of people compared Alagna to Pavarotti too, and you see what they both did to their voices. Florez is a great singer. AND to say Blake sings shit is IGNORANT.
And he's so good-looking , too, when he sangs ZELMIRA at Rome opera (1989 or 1990 ?). Please, if anyone could post it, it was "superbe" ! Excuse my english.
How underrated is THIS guy?! I know some people don't care for the sound of Rockwell Blake's voice, but is that enough to write him off? No! This is a voice of muscle, flexibility, and proves how crucial technique is to truly virtuoso singing. This is a very exciting performance!
I agree. I've seen many people get stuck on the timbre of the voice.....it doesn't bother me, personally. The agility and control Blake has is incredible, and his breath control is jaw-dropping. The guy sings embellishments on top of embellishments......stuff that the vast majority of Rossini tenors couldn't even manage. To be honest I'd rather hear Blake sing Rossini than Florez in almost every case.....perhaps I just enjoy Blake's styling and phrasing more.

ummmm spgtenor, it's fairly easy to float a passage up to a high D and then arpeggiate down out of it in the amount of time that he did it. You just have to have a good upper register that you can float. which he has, and which he did.

i wouldnt just credit a good upper register for this, think how well he's carrying his voice through the room, so much volume and color, besides this being a live performance he still finishes the phrase with only an eyebrow out of place;) AND picks himself straight up making it look easy..

Many tenors have good upper registers (Pavarotti, Kunde, Kraus, Gedda, Florez, Etc.) but few will manage to sing long 2 octave passages evenly and without a hint of running out of breath as Blake did. Others may do this in the studio, after several takes, but not live. Just watch Florez in a live performance.

Muy buena interpretación, una voz en toda su madurez, sin lugar a duda, uno de los mejores tenores ligeros líricos que he escuchado, claro tambien se resalta la buena trayectoria de Juan Diego Flórez en ésta aria, son muy pocos los que asumen con autoridad este papel.

Listen to the passage at 2:37...he doesn't even hit the high D until 13 seconds into it, then arpeggios down for another 10 seconds. Inhuman breath control!

The best rossinian tenor in my opinion... What a technique... Beautiful voice...
And BTW this is a very difficult aria to sing, and he did it perfectly... Bravo Rocky... hear those incredible top notes..

In 2005 I went to Lisbon to see Florez in La Donna del Lago. When I arrived at the theatre Florez was replaced because is was not feeling well. Replaced by Rockwell Blake. It was one of the best experiences in opera. Today I thank God for that replacement. Bravo Rockwell...

I've listened Flórez since he started his career and I've seen him in Valencia. Indeed, He has excellent technics and top notes with very good quality. But Blake is really a miracle, He combines sweet voice and canto di bravura with atonishing facility. I know there are many people who prefeer the beautiful voice of Flórez but I think Blake is the best rossinian tenor of the century. Each phrase, each word is full of meaning and his fiato is better (very much better) than Juan Diego's.

Florez is just as good as Rockwell Blake so is Maxim Mironov, to bonisolli as well, Juan Diego Florez has sung this and recorded it you should listen to it.

This man is absolutely amazing. And at his age today he should be on the roster at the Met in this rep. Talk about beautiful singing with courageous choices. Never backing off, none of this tacet for 5 bars only to sing a shit high note. He sang everynote and added a few more. Bravo Rocky!

China may have a lot of things but tenors of Rockwell Blake's facility and control--not to mention his phenomenal breath-holding capacity--are few and far between. One must never forget that it takes enormous cardio-vascular output to produce the majority of the arias that build and grow every singer's repertoire and reputation. Only a very strong physiology can contribute the energy and power needed to just take one high C in full voice. Few, in the world, ever accomplish this.

I should have also added, this voice is bigger than Florez', and Chris Merritt might have had this kind of technique and power at first, but he ruined his voice and wound up with something very ugly

This voice is one you either love or hate. BUT, that being said, you have to admire what he does with it. It's not a beautiful voice by any means, but his agility and technique are remarkable. I do think it's unfair to compare him with Florez. They are two different voices. Lots of people compared Alagna to Pavarotti too, and you see what they both did to their voices. Florez is a great singer. AND to say Blake sings shit is IGNORANT.

How underrated is THIS guy?! I know some people don't care for the sound of Rockwell Blake's voice, but is that enough to write him off? No! This is a voice of muscle, flexibility, and proves how crucial technique is to truly virtuoso singing. This is a very exciting performance!

I agree. I've seen many people get stuck on the timbre of the voice.....it doesn't bother me, personally. The agility and control Blake has is incredible, and his breath control is jaw-dropping. The guy sings embellishments on top of embellishments......stuff that the vast majority of Rossini tenors couldn't even manage. To be honest I'd rather hear Blake sing Rossini than Florez in almost every case.....perhaps I just enjoy Blake's styling and phrasing more.
