  • What a sad, depressing video. And I don't mean the fact that it's from the '80s, either. No wonder, then, why life is so gloomy. Still...a powerful song from Tony Carey.

  • i had heard tony carey played with rainbow

  • Another one hit wonder ... lol!! Tony Carey, Planet P Project, movie scores, tv show themes .... not to mention a little stint with that other one hit wonder "Richie Blackmore and Rainbow" ...

  • @kubasakiforums Ok then, lets hear another song of his that even cracked the top 20in the USA? Case closed next case. By the way, Planet P...Pleaaaaase,

  • @Pibbs1 The generally accepted industry metric of a US hit single (research it) is one that charted in Billboard's Hot 100 for a week or more, not "cracking" the top 20. This one peaked at 22, but stayed on the chart for 15 weeks. Another Tony Carey song deemed a hit? I'll give you four, straight from Billboard:

"Why me?" from Planet P: nine weeks.

"The first day of summer": eleven weeks

"I won't be home tonight": seven weeks

"West coast summer nights": nine weeks

    Case reopened ;)

  • @rollomaughfling Thanks for all the info that no one in their right mind could give a shit about. Are you this much of a pedantic ass in person, or is this just your internet persona?

  • @polosortsman No, just a special dispensation for you, personally.

  • @Pibbs1 Why me by Planet P, First day of Summer, there's 2 for you....

  • @Pibbs1 OK ... so it took me a little while to figure out you had replied to me, my bad. Tony Carey never "cracked" the top 20 in the USA, according to billboard. He did have 5 songs that "cracked" the top 100 for at least a week, @rollomaughfling pointed out the other four of them. Tony has been steadily recording progressive/AOR since 1975 and has recorded over 30 albums solo. I guess your definition of a one hit wonder is a little different. 5 is same number of "hits" as Pink Floyd had

  • @kubasakiforums Tony Carey had

    4 Billboard pop hits (2 Top 40)

3 Billboard mainstream rock hits (2 Top 10)

  • I saw him in Nashville when this song 1st came out he was playing the club circut , Awsome show got to chat him and his Band Great bunch of guys !

  • this song hit the charts twice....what a great song

  • I have tried to find this song for years. Just remember seeing the video back in the 80's once or twice and for some reason it just stuck with me. Too bad all the albums mentioned in the comments didn't get any backing in the US.

  • What movies, if any, was this song in?

  • This guy has many years of great stuff!!!

  • @mero361 Thanx for the encouragement - God Bless!

  • Tony Carey A one Hit Wonder ??????????

You Must have been Born Yesterday He Has Put Out Countless Albums And The Work With The Planet P Project Tony Has Been Around Since the Mid 1980's

He Has Also Wrtten Counless Songs That Have Been Hits

  • @Pibbs1 he had a song that reached no 67 on the top 100 cashbox magazine chart then started to tumble off the charts after peaking 6 weeks after making it onto the chart

  • @DRAGON0010000 Please do name Tony's other top 10 hits.

    There aren't any...At least n the US

  • @Pibbs1 never said he reach top 10 but there is alot of artist who never reached the top 10 but top 40 is the normal radio standard so if your a artist and your song dont go beyond 41 your a one hit wonder. even if you got alot of songs that are below 40 and i said he reach no 67 on the top 100 and it was only for a couple of weeks then he dropped off the charts

  • also radio stations back then only played songs that charted from no 40 on up and factor in the heavy air play the bigger acts like madonna micheal jackson got other artist got sorta pushed aside .but i dodnt come here to argue of course your right but sometimes a good song dont have to be top 10

  • This song is got full of melody its one of the most beautiful songs I have ever herd in my life , I know its about a fall and a rise and it talks about a reunion and a day being fine and I choose to take what good , I dont want to glamorise crime I just like good music and this is a fine fine tune.

  • why is tony's music liked by so many inmates? Do prisons play it over the intercoms?

  • Awesome tune. I dig alot of his stuff, even what he did with Planet P.

  • a classic i luv it

  • this is one of the greats plus this was when videos had a story to it and not just a bunch of cars, booty's and cuss words

  • from Rainbow to .. er this. As the Rainbow song Stargazer says "He falls instead of rising"

  • @Pibbs1 Just look at the other selections on YouTube. I think the problem is the public misses all the good stuff for fluff, Flavor of the Week, no heart, no substance

  • Tony Carey is beyond one hit wonder status, as this is not his best track, the self titled album is full of good stuff, and I also picked up Planet P on LP used, a hard to find one, sadly. He got airplay here, which is where I gave it a critical listen in 1982!

  • great song tony

  • well 1rst day of summer is played every where on june 21 rst so i dont think any 1 can call him a 1 hit wonder plus not that it matters this is a great song would been good on the soparanos

  • @Pibbs1 Room with a View ( 3. in Germany)

  • when this song was on MTV, i remember that godfather 1 and 2 was being played on HBO constantly - then "once upon a time in america" and Scarface came out. it was the Golden Age of old-school gangster romanticism!

  • Oh my god I loved this song when I was 15

  • i thought i was the only one who remembered

  • This song ' s a classic - gem from my teen - ager decade , the 80 ' s , best & all -

time - years of my life !!!!! I remember this

    from ` 84 & thank - God I could ' ve never

had forgoten this song , it' s amazing to

have a musician like Tony Carey in the

same life - time as me ,thanks Phibbs !

Phibb ! I tried to ever find - out like every -

one else that had wondered on what happened to Tony ?

  • This song is great!!

  • then he pulled that old Houdini, like we always new he would

  • Hey Pibbs, have a happy new year

    Pinkwrld

  • Great song!

  • Go gubbe, go låt=) SWEDEN LOVE IT!!!!

  • I Wont Be Home Tonight, West Coast Summer Nights, Why Me, A Fine Fine Day, First Day of Summer. After Pink World and Blue Highway Tony never recorded in US or released anything. In Europe, his hits included, Room With A View, Cold War Kids, The Flood, The Deal, No Mans Land....I can go on:)

check out my tube for as much of Tony Carey and Planet P Project as there is:)

    Pinkwrld

  • This was the song we played when my brother came home from his 3rd tour in Iraq. What a party.....what a song...thanx 4 da post bro....

  • This is a great song, I loved it when it came out, the video is a work of art. I remember it from MTV : )

  • Awesome song. And I was a huge fan of Planet P. I just about wore the song "King for a Day," out :)

  • Takes me back to a time when even a simple song could change an entire day or one's heart, bless you Pibbs1.

  • I love this song. it never got the acclaim it should have gotten.

  • One-hit wonder?!? Are you COMPLETELY cripple-headed or are you practicing sarcasm?

That cat's got talent - and 35+ albums (counting the inevitable "collections/greatest hits").

  • @CatfishR69 i was about to say he had another hit on this cd called first day of summer.

  • After 12 years, I was released from prison on Oct. 16, 1998. On my way home, I heard this song playing on the radio. It is now 10 years later and I haven't sat no more - they haven't put me there no more - it's been 10 years of fine, fine, days. Thanks Tony for giving me words to live by.

  • why were in there for?

  • Got sent up for felonious assault. I shot at a car that was crowding me when I was riding my motorcycle. Turned out to be a cop's son. Caught another felonious assault and an attempted murder while on the inside. People shouldn't stand too close to a naked biker.

  • @CillB27 what were you in for? just wondering?

  • @CillB27 exactly i did 9yrs 10months 17 days. its been great since

  • @CillB27 sing it, brother!

  • Oh man! I've been tryin to figure out who sings this song for years. Thank you for uploading this. It was one of my favorite songs back whrn I was a kid. But the only thing I remembered about the song and the video was the part about taking a $20 cab ride. Awesome. Thanks again!

  • This was when mtv was MUSIC television that was must see Tony was also in rainbow

  • love this song - great memories

  • Great song. Thanks for posting.

  • Que buen tema acabo de descubrir!!!!! Excelente!!!!!

What a great song i just found!!!!!! Great, Excellent song!!!!!

  • what year did this video/song come out?

  • Early 1984.

  • Probably been mentioned, but I'm too lazy to go back and check....this wasn't a one-hitter. He also had a #33 hit with "The First Day Of Summer".

  • if you wanna get technical he had bigger hit with why me? planet p that was actually him too.

  • You are exactly correct, it is him, but the song wasn't a bigger hit. In fact, it never cracked the Top 40.

  • This was truly a great song back in 1984, I remember listening to it whenever we pulled into port (undergoing REFRA at GITMO for 2.5 excuciating months), but the video was just great! I wish today's video's were one half as imaginative.

  • I am glad I am not the only one who was haunted by this song. I remember it was on MTV and I would wait for it to come on. 20 years later it is just as I remember it. Thanks for the trip back to my younger days.

  • Thank you for putting this video up. I have been driving friends crazy asking if they remembered some song called fine fine day by some guy Tony. This song plays in my head from time to time.

  • Thank you so much for posting this song! I only ever heard it one or twice in about twenty years but I absolutely love it and the vid. It is so well done!!!

  • Was that Hal Linden as the uncle?

  • OMG! That's what I used to think back in '84. "Hey look...it's Barney Miller as Sonny!"

  • Comment removed

  • This tune has gone through my head now and then since I last heard it 20+ years ago, and it never stops coming back. Finally looked it up here on YT to refresh the ol' memory, and it's just like I remember it. Great and haunting song.

  • WOW! Does this song bring back some memories. I was a junior in high school and I would always crank up the radio everytime I heard it.

  • ex-rainbow keyboard player tony carey

  • Also in the band Planet P, which had the hit "Why Me" around this time.

  • ah yes, great tune. so is i won't be home tonite. thanx for the tunes.

  • Great song!

  • I'll never forget this song. It was 1984, I was in the NAVY. I had been listening to this song on MTV. I got word that my father had just passed away from a heart attack.

This song was all over the place at the time. At the funeral , I kept hearing this song in my head during the burial service.

It will always remind me of Dad. I know I'll never forget this song.

    Some reunion.

Nice piece of art though. Thanks for the post and thanks Tony for this great tune.

  • isn't funny how someone remembers a song that reminds u of a certain year and reminds u of what u were doing at the moment in time when you were just looking at the clouds...

  • great song

  • I love Tony Carey! I loved him way back when, and I still love him. The man is hot!! I mean damn, those brown eyes and long hair makes me feel like a schoolgirl again!! Gorgeous Man!

  • Geez, 25 years goes by so quickly! especially for an old fart like me, now 62! But I always liked TC, wonderful voice and a good writer. Too bad most don't know of him.

  • great song and video, ahhhh when MTV was cool, it started out right and Viacom went and screwed it up like every major corp. always does

  • Ah, childhood memories! My first concert was the summer of 84. I was 12 and Tony Carey opened for Night Ranger at the Township Auditorium in Columbia, SC. Would love to know who else was there!

  • This was my favorite video back then, and still is today. I love this man!

  • This is the way a music video should be! Good plot, dramatic theme, and decent acting. Lots of suspense. I remember hearing this song in the spring of 84 during my H.S. sophmore year. One of my fav videos of that year. That henchman does look like Phil Collins.

  • great story behind this song this song has meaning well written great voice tony sings it with great presence much more pleasent to listen, then a song with no emotion from singer . you can tell he sings from the heart

  • one hit wonder?

In 1982 Tony reached the US-charts with "I Won't Be Home Tonight", in 1983 with "Planet P Project's - Why Me?", and in 1984 with "Fine, Fine Day" and "First Day Of Summer". The videos could be seen on MTV. In Germany (1988), Tony made the charts with "Room With A View".

  • he may be a one hit wonder to you. but to us here in fresno he's a hero. he is from the central valley. ca, and planet p will always be a hit here.

  • "Pink World" is a song - and it is the name of a 2 record album. Very rock opera! The radio edit version of pink world sounds nothing like the album version. You haven't really heard what he can do until you have listened to it.

  • its afine fine day

  • If you like this then you should check out Tony's Planet P Project - "Pink World". I just got done listening to it - well done

  • The Bald guy is Phil Collins

  • Remembered this song, A Fine, Fine Day, after not hearing it for almost 20 years. One of my favorite songs/videos of all time. NutRingGuy

  • someone needs to do this song on american idol, its a winner

  • that be bad ass!

see...to Carey's credit, I was sitting here working, and all of a sudden I had the intro melody in my head - so had to dial it up on youtube.

  • I had this on cassette, and I looked for 15 years and never found it on CD. Finally, I found the MP3 a few months ago, and it's just as great as I remember. Why this was never used for "The Sopranos" I don't know.

  • does anybody know who is that bald guy at 1:35 and 03:40?

  • he's not who you think it is

  • take me back

    Desiree Dawn songwryter Oxford Mississippi

  • Thank goodness for random songs on internet radio! I was 11 when this came out and I remembered the words like it was yesterday - and I didn't know who sang it at the time. I'm enlightened now!

  • So very good!

    Hi from Sweden!

  • jäla bra låt!

    Hej Svenne:)

  • This is wonderful. Considering the memories I lost after Desert Storm this stired a few cobwebs and brought a smile to my face.

    Thanks for making this a

    Fine

    Fine

    Day

  • Tell you what. If the Carey naysayers heard Springsteen sing this, they'd call it perfect! This song kicks ass. I think the boss would be happy to have written it!

  • this song is a fucking epic, no doubt. I love the fact that it features a real life organ solo, instead of using a 1983 Casio synthesizer like every other song from the early 80's. But what's with Phil Collins at 3:39? :)

  • This isn't his only hit. The First Day of Summer & I Won't Be Home Tonight were also hits. Then there's Planet P Project, which is basically Tony Carey. They had Why Me?, Power Tools, and Static on the Radio, plus a few others

  • Well, for Planet P Project, they got a lot of rotation on Mtv and USA Network back in the day. Do You See, What I See? and Behind The Barrier. Those songs were so good, I bought the LP. I don't recall if I bought this single or not but, I think that I did.

  • absolutely brilliant 1 of my favourites ofall time

  • who is that bald guy with the sunglasses?

  • barab im srry but tony is grea but mychemicalromance and P!ATD is better

  • At least Toney Carey was original and talented. My Chemical Romance are horrid.

  • My chemical romance are a bunch of emo's. They'll get over their missery someday and the music will end for them. No staying power.

  • dudes that was ur time its cool but not as better as mychemicalromance

  • i agree with fakerea1, hearing it at the right place at the right time. i remember hearing this when i was 17 on a rainbow family tree compilation cd. this, along with dio's dont talk to strangers i played to death! absolutely brilliant song!!! love it!!!!!

  • Great song! Great video! Thank God for Youtube, I haven't seen this video in years. Brings back memories!

  • First time I heard this song...it was one of those moments where you were IN the RIGHT PLACE at the RIGHT TIME.

Memories of Buffalo, NY's WBEN-FM 102.5 (later WMJQ) - but man oh man *Rock 102* back in the early heyday was somethin'...

    Thanks for posting this!!

  • 97 Rock and Snortin' Norton were much better!

  • Brings back a lot of memories of high school, work and studying and MTV when it was a real MUSIC CHANNEL

  • Tony Carey is one of the "REAL PEOPLE" in music.

  • Thanks for posting, but no way this is a one hit wonder. The man is a genius. Try to get a copy of Pink World, forgotton treasure and brilliant concept album, released in 1984.

  • i have been trying to get a copy of that one, but also check out 1931: Go OUt Dancing Part One

  • Thank you very much for posting this video. I Loved this song when I was a younger man and now that I'm older, it means so much more to me.

I was helping some buddies rebuild at bar in Maryland and there was a jukebox in the place that still worked. We played this song till the owner got so sick of it, he unplugged it on us.

On opening night, this was the very first song that was played by one of the customers. The owner had no choice but to listen to it again. Naturally, we all busted up.

  • Although this was Tony's biggest hit under his own name, he was also the mastermind behind Planet P. Tony basically WAS Planet P, writing the songs and playing most of the instruments.

And as I recall, Planet P's Why Me was a bit of a hit, so that sort of nixes Tony's "one hit wonder" status.

  • tony carey rocks 1 of the best songs ever made nothing phony just straight talent!

  • Great Song! God I miss that 80'S Heart!!

  • This song is amazing! i've been looking for it till the Tube started, Thanks a Lot!!!

  • a song close to my heart been there done that stillhere thanks for the video it is still afine day 30 years ago aug 29

    thanks again beautiful

  • Great song! I haven't heard that since 1984 when I just turned 17. Thanks Pibbs.

  • ONE HIT WONDER ?!!? XD

  • wait a minute .. did you just use tony carey n one hit wonder in the same breath? gotta be kidding me. britney n all those other whiny divas have no talent. tony and planet p are huge internationally. just americans have no taste in music( and i m american) how about 1st day of summer i wont be home tonight west coast summer nights. then back when he was the keyboard guy in rainbow and the all the good planet p music out there. i was in the army in 83 when i heard his sound. nothing compares

  • talented man- thanks for sharing this one.

  • What a wonderful song!

  • ...Or was it 1984? Damn 24 years ago! In any case great music is timeless!

  • ..Or was it 1984? Damn 24 years ago! Yes. It was 84. I was lead guitarist of a teen band and was crashing at the other guitarist's parents' house all spring. The other guitarist's mom didn't like that this was a "pro-Mob" vid. The guy just got out of prison and he's bustin' balls with the other Goombahs.

  • Rainbow and of course solo but how about Planet P Project? Maybe a a video one hit wonder but as a musician he was not far behind musicians like Todd Rundgren who also played many instruments. This vid took me back to jr high in 1983 when MTV would actually show videos!

  • Tony is a fine looking Italian man, yummy!

  • Native American, actually. Other stuff too, but the hair and cheekbones are pure Native.

  • i never realized how sexy Tony was, 24 years ago at 11 years old, you don't think about that kind of stuff, ;D

  • the first time i saw this video was in the summer of 1984 i was 11 at the time, wow time flies by so quickly!

  • To me, 'One Hit Wonder' is someone like the 'hey mickey' girl...

Tony Carey may have never been big in the US, but he remains a great artist. Like Don McLean, he's remained a bigger star in Europe than here.

Check out his stuff on iTunes-- only a tiny bit is here on Youtube. If you like him, you are in for a treat...

Rainbow was about a decade ahead of its time, in a large part because of Tony's dramtic but soulful keyboards.

  • Why on earth would someone thumb down the above comment? I'm thumbing it back up.

  • this should have been a huge hit.what a great song, and video too.

  • great vid, tony is the best, nothing else to say bout him. he's best on that type of music. I't's a fine fine day<3

  • *****

  • Sonny was a bum. Never could stay out of trouble. Broke his momma's heart when he took off. Did not even call her. Good riddance we all thought. That is until the phone call.

  • maybe so but he did his sittin' he did hard time and didn't snitch

  • word

  • Is that Harvey Keitel as the cop?

  • I never noticed Phil Collins in this video as a kid.

  • Could someone please kindly tell me who plays Sonny; who plays the newspaper reporter? Thanks.

  • I worked for the production company that did this video and am briefly in one of the scenes. It was a very low-budget shoot. The guy who plays Sonny actually worked for an ad agency at the time. Harvey Keitel and Phil Collins are not in the video...

  • The guy playing Sonny worked for an ad agency? He looks just like the one guy in "The Godfather"...that's who I always thought he was, John P. Ryan from "The Godfather" and other movies.

  • Tony Carey played keyboards for Rainbow when Ronnie James Dio was the vocalist.

  • Thank You Reggarza07, I wondered where this guy came from! Rainbow rocks!

  • Glad I read the comments first- I was about to say that Tony Carey used to play keyboards for Rainbow. I actually have an old Rainbow album that he's on.

  • Been looking for this song along time. Thanks

  • I always thought it was interesting that at the same time Tony was doing stuff like, this sort of more or less radio friendly kinda Springsteen-ish rock n roll, he was also doing the Planet P stuff.

Course, once I realized that Planet P WAS Tony (via an article around the time of Pink World), it seemed so obvious it's the same vocalist, if nothing else.

  • Tony Carey is as close to a one hit wonder as mexican dirt weed is to skunk bud. Sheesh. but at least you got the great tune part right.

  • OOOPS havent heard most of it, Tony got screwed in US, no monies off first 4 lps. Embezzeled. Left for Europe and hit after hit. Room With A View, No Mans Land, I Feel Good, For You, Cold War Kids, and still more coming out. In Europe the money flowed again. A Fine Fine Day a favorite of most but not his best his best, your missing out, check out myspace page, over 100 songs + might like more then you think, music worth release in this time.

    Pinkwrld

  • Hey - he had more than one hit ;-)

  • Tony has some amazing stuff out. . . While this was always one of my favorites from the 80s, his Planet P Project "Pink World" absolutely rocked.

Thanks to the poster for putting this up. I hadn't seen it in almost 20 years.

  • nice, thanks!

  • People made a fuss on Springsteen, not I, no, my fav was Tony Carey :)

  • Actually Tony Carey doesn't qualify as a one hit wonder, as he had another hit with "Why Me" under the name Planet P (Carey was the entire membership of Planet P).

  • also "I wont be home tonight." plus he was in rainbow.

  • aw man i forgot how sad this video was. poor uncle sonny.

  • i forgot how cute Tony was. :D

  • yeah!

  • He's a beauty, isn't he? *sigh*
