i have an 03 cavalier too, my gages do the exact same thing accept for mine is with the rpms and temperature gage and sum times the speed gets stuck too but then its wierd because they fix them selves some times and then they go back to being fucked other days ,
@fernan0808 The hard part is getting the cluster out. Have to take apart a lot of the dash. Once you get the cluster out, you'll see the clear cover is glued to a black plastic frame. That black plastic frame has 7 clips that hold it to the white plastic gauge frame. Tiny screwdriver to pry the clips and another one to hold the two frames apart for the first two should do it.
Once you get the gauge cluster out, there should be between 4 and 8 screws around the outside of the entire cluster. Remove these screws, and the clear cover should come right off.
As I can see, the gauges still work, and still do their sweeps, so simply adjusting the needles should work. There are other vids out there posting how to remove the dash, and the pull the needles off. Let me know how this works out for you.
Really, it's an easy fix, simply FILL the tank, remove the unit, remove the two needles. Reinstall the cluster, minus the clear front cover, start and let the car get to operating temperature, and reinstall and set the temp needle at 195, assuming you have a stock type thermostat. And the Fuel tank is full, so put the needle at Full. Easy fix, turn car off, reinstall plastic front cover and you should be set.
dude i have the same fiking problem .. it happened after i removed the dash and kinda messed around with the cluster trying to se were the bolts were ..
i bought it used and it was already like that... still is like this i think the only way of resolving this problem its buying a new one and its very expensive i think. . . anyways I just let the CHECK GUAGES light come up to know when to fill my gas tank
and my CHECK GUAGES come on too when i need gas,but ur at 53,000 miles,im at 121,000 miles, only difference,if u get it fixed let me know whats up with it please!!!!!!

@Jrawseome86 Buy a used cluster of ebay but make sure the miles arent lower than the one on the dash . The cluster is fairly easy.

The stepper motors in some cluster units were defective and would 'stick' from time to time. Your best solution is to replace.
