  • Not only that, us Bass Trombonist do not have a cut off in our range. We have to play extremeply low but are also expected to play as high as a tenor! Do you know how hard it is to play 6-7 octaves!

  • @MrBrettis Umm no. You are never going to see a Tenor or an Alto play 4 octaves below a middle C, Thats where we come into play but we are still expected to play as high as they can as well. Its impossible for a Tenor to go as low as a bass, they only have one trigger. Yes we can play very very high but we don't sound nearly as good as a tenor in some cases but we are still expected to play them.

  • I wish I can play that good. Obviously people do not under stand how hard it is to play a range like that. I know sometimes us bass trombonist sometimes hit those low notes that don't even sound like they ahve any tone to it but remember that in order to do that we have to work hours every day in order for our lips to addapt to playing such low notes.

  • @mongdex A dependent setup doesn't allow you to use the Gb valve by itself. It only works when the F valve is pressed. David Taylor uses this set up

  • @chambon911 he's playing some of the most basic of the bass trombone fundamentals and playing it rather well. that helps on evenness of getting in and out of the petal range and making "double trigger" notes not sound muffled and shitty.

  • i like the fact that you are using a double trigger bass trombone for starters its one of my favorite trombones!!!!! secondly some trombone players can only play the pedal notes on the bass puffing there cheeks out while others can keep a stable face so in all words what is comfortable and helps get the sound out and make it sound great cannot be dependent only on just keeping the stable face so when you see someone puffing there cheeks thats just how they get the note out

  • @lordofdastrings76 Actually, film and video game scores are pushing the boundaries of low brass which is proven with the the more frequent use of contrabass trombones, 8 member horn sections, 2 tubas, euphoniums etc. and with it the desire for players to blast out pedals. @Bassbonemexie has a great low range and this IS important. Check out the video entitled "Hellboy bass trombone massacre" on here. They would agree with me.

  • The problem is what may work for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone else. I take lessons from a man who "puffs his cheeks" and is considered to be one of the best Trombone instructors in the country. His books are used by many institutions, are you willing to say that he is wrong?

  • @audbassbone oh so you study with doug yeo from boston? or charles vernon from chicago? or ilan morgenstern from san antonio? because they dont puff theyre cheeks. they guy is obviously doing a phenomenal job.

  • @griego4m The point was that some people who would be viewing this who puff their cheeks may get completely discouraged to hear that there is only "one way" to play. I don't study underneath those guys, but if my teacher can teach a bass trombonist to play (even though the teacher "puffs his cheeks"), and that bass trombone player is now headed to study under Douglas Yeo, what does that say about the philosophy of not puffing your cheeks.

    David Taylor as well as Dizzy Gillespie (puffers).

  • Is that a 3062? I played one of them at All-State and fell in love instantly. There was even a Shires booth there and I preferred the Getzen. Great, great horn, definitely on my wish list.

  • Like all musical instruments, the trombone is a means to an end. Treating it as a branch of athletics so that you can, in an undisciplined and arthythmic way, flay all over registers that you don't need, is plain silly.

  • Everyone has their own way of making things work for themselves. All I think off when playing either high or low is just having the right airspeed which means that the tongue is in the right position. When there are many jaw changes that changes the oral cavity thus changing the tone quality. and I may be able to play very low and very high but if I have too much movement in my face my tone quality becomes very inconsistent. You probably heard this a thousand times.

  • Its great that you dont need to puff your cheeks. I just wonder why is it that you move your face so much. Your jaw seems to move all over the place and you make a lot of weird faces. Other than that I gues you have those pedals down.

  • Are you playing the double pedal Bb with both valves and the whole slide? I can't see. :) It sounds more like a B natural though. Try playing it in 1st or 2nd on the open horn. FWIW, I'm a "cheek puffer" from mid range on down. My teacher didn't like it but I don't really care as it seems overly difficult to control it.

  • @bassbonemexie Man in your vid your arpeggios sound so smooth, like with no resistance at all. I've played some Bach bass bones and they have so much resistance that you could never do that.

    What is your mouthpiece because I'm trying to do what you do but it's hard as hell because I'm using the Griego CS5 that came with the horn, and that cup is super shallow, but I can hit a B flat an octave above the high B flat you played, so I guess that's the trade off. But what kind of mouthpiece is it?

  • I dont puff mine until after double pedal Bb but thats a tenor with a 6.5al mouthpiece. But the other thing i notice people say that i cant stand is "i need a trigger to play pedals". not true.

  • Everyone changes there embrochure to varying degrees. But you do change it alot inside the mouth piece. Anyone who says they are not changing it when they are going up and down are lieing. People who do it inside the mouth pieace just have a good controll on what the embrochure is doing.

  • @babtrombone Inside the mouthpiece is expected and necessary. The outside, however, should have limited movement. If you look at most of the virtuosos of the brass world, their faces to change much at all from the top of the horn to the bottom. There is a difference between changing and shifting though.

  • @Owunthrizzel there can be change inside the mouthpiece that is unnecessary as well. I've never physically seen another bass trombonist play in this way without taking a breath, or making a break in sound like rearticulating before a certain point in register, starting upper register, and going lower and lower. It is true many virtuosos have limited movement, but I think that some movement is necessary for me personally with the general extreme register of bass trombone.

I dont think this is going to stop you from getting a great gig some day if you dont already have one. I was just stating my opinion then someone else wanted one. I think you sound great, I really do.

  • Sounds good. I would tell you to watch your chin closely. You are losing ideal embouchure form in the low register. Your chin should stay firm just like the corners. I know Im just some dude on youtube so I understand if you dont take me seriously.
