@bkthaking You can never be sure by just looking at someone if they are a drug user or not. Studies show that more homelessness is caused by mental illness than drug addiction and what may look like blatant drug abuse to the untrained eye can often be effects of a mental illness.

The United States used to have a robust program for dealing with mental illness. Unfortunately, the state hospitals devolved into horrible places of abuse, mistreatment, etc. We made a very deliberate decision to abandon the mentally ill, under the guise of their 'rights'. Instead of fixing what was broken, we shifted the problem on to the prison system to deal with. As I've gotten older, I now see what this country really is. It's not what I had been told growing up. It is worthy of contempt.

The reason to "love" this guy - he's not even that naive the most people are. Like he said, food banks ect are awesome but their only a temporary fix. If we had an organization that would provide a place to shower and get some cloths and then help them find jobs and a place to stay until they had their first and last months worth of rent. @LandonInFlorida i understand what yoiu mean but i have a question....here in germany you get hartz4 if you dont work that means they pay your rent(flat up to 55qm)and the water and electricity...plus 350 euro to live....if you have kids you even get much more from the government(tax payer) and you get extra money if you need clothes...you also get a health insurance card so you can go to every doctor free...doesnt programs like this exist in the us..?

The United States used to have a robust program for dealing with mental illness. Unfortunately, the state hospitals devolved into horrible places of abuse, mistreatment, etc. We made a very deliberate decision to abandon the mentally ill, under the guise of their 'rights'. Instead of fixing what was broken, we shifted the problem on to the prison system to deal with. As I've gotten older, I now see what this country really is. It's not what I had been told growing up. It is worthy of contempt.

I have been Homeless on the Streets on Montreal,Canada...I'v slept on Ste-Catherine,Ste-Denis and Ontario Streets..to name a few....I tried to get into a shealter and i couldn't...If you have never been homeless..you don't know what it is and don't judge anyone.And BTW i was homeless by choice,i wanted to see what it was like.And it ain't no joke! Makes me appreciate what i have allot more!

The reason to "love" this guy - he's not even that naive the most people are. Living from 2 bucks a day (or even less), being reflected AND also respecting everyone's opinion, being subjective not objective nor totally ignorant. Like he said, food banks ect are awesome but their only a temporary fix. If we had an organization that would provide a place to shower and get some cloths and then help them find jobs and a place to stay until they had their first and last months worth of rent. I mean that's whats going to chang things. Of course there will always be people who cant be helped because they dont want to help themselves but thats not alway the case.

I lived the very best years of my life in Los Angeles and I will verify that this young man got at least one thing right. Southern California is a GREAT place to live IF you have money. Being homeless is not something I would want to do anywhere but that is particularly true in Los Angeles. I hope this young man finds a solution to his problems.

We dnt knw if he made sme bad choices bsides losing his job but he seems like a very sympathetic person despite his situation. If unemployment is hard for regular ppl imagine hw hard it would b not evn having an adress and looking "ratty" like he said. He has no support system either-no parents whether they`re not alive or he has a bad relationship with thm, no friends or fair weather ones which are the worst kind and not totally uncommon. From what I am hearing, I think this guy brought the homelessness upon himself... if he was able to support himself financially to get a college degree, it's his fault for altering his lifestyle to the all time low it is at now (whether drugs, alcohol, gambling, laziness, or whatever he did).
