  • cool i didnt know about this untill roblox put this up

  • Game engines are a pain in the ass.

I've tried others like Unity, DirectX Studio, GameStudio... the list goes on. The bottom line is that programming your own engine is the best way to go.

If the engine is very fast and flexible, chances are you'll have to suffer from no documentation.

Writing your own version of something that "acts" as an engine is way less gay than writing something gay like an engine, or using engines that bring not enough help.

    Write games raw.

  • thats great but honestly i prefer quality over quantity. 18 gb for rage and honestly 8-10 hrs of gameplay is shitty. Another thing if the game engine is so great how come it's physics is so fucked up? I move 2 mph on the car and somehow i can do a 360 or am going 200 mph and somehow be able to instantly stop?

  • looks pretty generic

  • @killerDbz45 No you have not seen better. Maybe crysis has slightly better graphics at first take - but IDTech5 is superior. Graphics are a small part of the engine. I can quite safely say, as I currently work at a IDTech4 licensee, that nothing out there is even in the same ball park as IDT5 let alone league. Just wait until ID drops screens and a movie for Doom 4. This engine is capable of 4 to 6x more visual fidelity than rage is using (you can thank consoles for that..)

  • rage releases in late 2011.. this vid is from 2007. rage has been in developing for over 4 years. i cant wait to buy it.

  • i really won't like to brag but i have actually seen way better game engines than this

  • @KillerDbz45 you mean you've seen better graphics. An engine is much more than graphics.

  • @KillerDbz45 This was from nearly 4 years ago... It's the most advanced engine i've seen.

  • so it is a dream engine for game designers finally

  • i want john romero back!!!

  • RAGE! (and thats a good thing, although i wish i could get a tiny sneak peek at DOOM 4; if its happening of course) thanks for uploading! Carmack FTW!

  • looks like RAGE

  • looks great!can't wait to play the game...

  • nice if it can be aplied to a mmo

  • I was more excited to see John Carmack talk than to watch his new game engine, which is awesome as well of course, lol.

  • Reminds me of the first Motorstorm game

  • A guy named John Carmack was the first guy to turn into a zombie in the doom movie.

  • is it public?

  • I dislike cross platform engines, they are just a reapplication of resources we have already seen hundreds of games already based around. They also hold back visual progress by limiting games by the capabilities of the weakest hardware components.

Engines like this are just to make it easier for developers to milk their titles across multiple platforms; just like Unreal Engine 3.

  • you have no idea what your saying about hating cross platform Engines thats called do what you want with out limits on other hardware.

but cross platform games is where it hurts cuz they have to make the game work on all the hardware finding a place in the middle.

  • You say I don't know what I'm saying; then agree with me that cross platform games are limit.

It seems I'm not the one confused, or do you want to clarify.

  • cross platform engine good

    cross platform game bad

  • Seeing how cross platform engines are specifically designed to make cross platform development easier; I don't see how you can call one good and one bad.

What you are calling good encourages what you call bad.

  • all game engines are multi platform, just how you use it to make games. this ID engine is a new type of technolgy to make things better for doing more with in game stuff and haveing lesser hardware.

  • Doom 3, Source and CryEngine 2 were all not cross platform engines. You can use them for cross platform games; but there is a big difference between these and a cross platform engine.

A engine that can consider itself cross platform was specifically built from the ground up or modified with a variety of features that makes cross platform development easier. This may be art asset or code generation so there is less work when developing for multiple platforms.

    Specifically built for purpose.

  • 1 giant texture is a really shitty system. Try working on maps in ArmA with this system. It's very ahrd to modify your heightmaps if you have to align the texutre.

  • thats a good system if you have stuff that uses the same shader then you can put all of it on 1 texture and freeing up memory other than having multiple textures and wasteing resources.

  • i wonder when will we see an fpp multiplayer game with truly realistic graphics...

  • how much ram can a vista 65 bit pc have?

  • 65 bit lol its 64 bit

  • sry my mistake, i know it,s 64 bit

  • i think more then 40 gb ram

  • 64 bit technology allows for exabytes of RAM. That's 16.8 million terabytes.

Vista handles much less at the moment, look up their OS specs

  • 64bit - 8gigs

  • Well with today's RAM and HDD speeds, you have to have 27 GB textures. Other the games might load fast. If they do THAT, you might spend more time playing. Then it would be FUN.

We simply cannot allow that to happen.

  • Awesome tech! B4 I though etqw was idtech5 but it was idtech4.

  • its good, but when the infinity engine comes out, this will get ripped to little pieces

  • eh, this engine has nothing in common with the infinity engine. This is a modular design while the infinity engine is a space engine.

Though, man... the infinity engine is probably the coolest thing I've EVER seen rendered in realtime.

  • sorry hahaha, i seem to compare everything with everything xD. but yeah the infinity engine is awesome. i been talking to the guy who is in charge of the project. problem is, if the actual game is going to be like he says it will, there wont be much point in making other games, cause none will match it XD. owning real sized planets that suffer natarul disasters and stuff, thats just AMAZING.

  • engines are different, games are different. no need to compare. infinity engine is mainly programmed by one guy while rage has a team of 60+ people working on it. regardless both are impressive in their own right.

  • infinity has alot more than one guy. less than 60 but more than 1

  • uhh which infinity engine? I googled infinity engine and got Baldur's Gate, a game which will be celebrating its 10th anniversity of release this year. please direct me to what you're talking about

  • try infinity demo. that worked for me

  • OMG DID HE SAID 26GB ON THIS MAP

  • 26 or 27gb of TEXTURES oO omg its crazy xD

  • @Darkfoster22 - No he said "20-some-odd", not 26. Pay attention.

Also, that's just the textures. The voxels and animated meshes are probably another few GB.

  • @cyborgtroy Still 20 gigs is a lot, wow games just get bigger ex: napoleon total war is 20 gigs installed.

  • @JordanWilde - I know, I don't know how Rage is going to handle having that much resources... I don't have the graphics card to handle that, anyway. :/

  • @cyborgtroy but how would they fit a game on 360 or ps3?

  • @BigdogWitBigdog - lol they won't

  • @Darkfoster22 ON THE TEXTURE THAT IS WOW

  • the first preiviews of UT3 Engine looked even better then this and look at UT3 now. doenst look that good anymore

  • Id is fuckin legendary when it comes to games..

  • In unsurprising news, id have confirmed that they have started production on Doom 4.

  • nznick361: he's da god of gaming world! worship him :D

  • motorstorm lol

  • John Carmack's a smart guy. But Tim Sweeney's smarter. Unreal Engine 3 still blows id Tech 5 out of the water.

  • No...

  • didnt amaze me after crysis. and whats that? steve jobs thought of puting in games in his macs?

  • AHAHA, That was funny, NOT, Crysis fails

  • no dude, crysis is better, plus this is nothing in front of far cry 2 and clear sky

  • @0:50 " 20 somewhat GIGABYTES of texture" oO wow, I don't think my processor will be happy with a game like that, I still got a 1.6 Single Core -_-

  • mine neither =)

  • uh, 1.6 GHZ would be kick ass, as it's your graphics card that renders it, not your CPU

  • I believe he's referring to the megaTexture system. Although I think making textures this big is kinda stupid since you will either need high-def satellite data or largely procedural texturing to generate it anyway, it only keeps a tiny fraction in memory by streaming from the hard drive.

  • OMG bloody amazing flippingly detailed textures and graphics. Just amazing.

  • Didn't you even see that id made a game with normal daylight :-) and its a racer / shooter named Rage so its not a Doom 4 or Quake 5

  • Thats crazy

  • ha ha ha yeh "anyone" ha ha ha

  • lol... i couldn't

  • diskette007, you my good sir obviously have no idea about what goes into an engine or making modern, advanced 3d graphics in general

  • suck my dick fag

  • my pleasure.

  • WWDC 2007

    LOVED IT!

  • soo rich, so talented... give me a job.

  • A xpectacular 3D Engine with high definition textures is not suficient, the game history and features is the most relevant...

  • What about spending some energy on making good games? love the mega texture idea tho - but surely there is a desire for some quality games ?

  • explain game engine to me

  • isn't the new game called rage or something like that?

  • road rage? road rash? idunno.

  • DOOM IV!!!??

  • This is my new quote of the week: "The ID Tech 5 demo is just that, a demo, it´s not a game."

  • You fial - its their new game rages. eat your words

  • New quote: "This demo is a game and not a engine demo"

  • well is he gonna do a 4th doom

  • He said that but he didn't said if it was in development, for now he said that there will be a doom 4.

  • i say id should make a game at the same level of coolness as Gears of War or Halo Series. It would relate to what happens in "the end times" or whatever that's supposed ot mean

  • Halo is not cool - its hyped

  • How could you possibly run anything with 20G of textures?? That seems like a LOT, even for the PS3 or 360.

  • I believe the technology might be similar to the one in kkrieger, in which textures are procedurally generated. Maybe the textures are randomized and doled out to the surfaces when the level loads, so you have one texture, stretched out over the whole area.

  • no, it's not quite the same, its just one huge texture over a huge map, you can make changes in any area you want to make areas look unique, and its streamed on the fly for players.

  • The texture memory is 20Gb, it's obviously compressed. He's states this in another showing of the engine.

  • there is no 20GB of texture resident in memory, it is streamed on the fly...

  • I agree but he's still a nerd lol. You cannot win! I will keep going!

  • snooozzzzzeee....

  • Looks like Motorstorm...

  • Correction: ...you could *shoot* really nasty (but cool) looking demons and stuff.

  • I've got a great idea for a game using this engine. How about we have some tough guys, I don't know, maybe Marines, except they're like in space or something, and they've got these teleporters, except the teleporters mess up and open a PORTAL TO HELL and you could really nasty (but cool) looking demons and stuff.

  • not doom again... make quake V or something

  • Yeah that's kind of my point. id's been making the same two games over and over and over again since 1994. It's not really a game company; it's more of a graphics engine company. The "games" it makes are proofs of concept for whatever engine it produces. They license the engine to real game companies like Ravensoft and then we get real games.

  • megatexture is epic, if your pc sux go whine about it somewhere else

  • Wow! This looks great. 20 gigs of textures... wonder how they get away with that.

  • It will only take another $1000 to upgrade my computer again?

  • if we are lucky this new engine will be completed by 2010

  • poofy, please show me an "ancient" game with graphics that look this good?

sure, it may not outdo every game out there now, but it isn't always about the realness of the graphics. There are a lot of other factors that go into making a good game engine

  • amen brother!

  • This shit looks old as hell, no offense to the "new Technology", lol. These graphics, are ancient people.

  • Hmmm... that didn´t go to well did it?

  • 10 days? That's amazing. I really can't wait for the first game to run on this.

  • im placing my money on the cryengine2

  • This is from the WWDC07, Mac Developer's Conference from Apple.

  • Carmack is the man. But Cyrsis Engine Kick's his new engine's arse.

  • id tech 5 vs. crytech 2

    intresting

  • par w crysis

  • gah. still no real time raytracing?

  • That was very sweet carmack is a genius. All hail the pioneer of the FPS genre.

  • NOTHING CAN BEAT SOURCE ENGINE

  • Except nearly most newer engines?

Source is nice and can scale well, but that makes it very limited nowadays. It beat ass a few years ago, sure, but you cant expect that to keep going.

  • Source is the best in some ways. It is just so open and easy to use. They supply everything for you and its all like drag and drop. It is growing older and hopefully half life 2 ep2 will renew it.

  • and its on os x leopard :)

  • I'm not really impressed thus far. It looks exactly like the last Unreal Engine from like 3 years ago. Where's the technological leaps and bounds?

  • if you can't see the differance between this and the old unreal engine you must be blind.

  • I'm talking about the previous Unreal engine that Gears of War runs on, not the "old" Unreal engine.

  • Go watch this on the apple website. Much better quality and u can actually hear him talking. apple dot com slash quicktime slash qtv slash keynote

  • That guy is the epitome of nerdiness. More power to him.. I'm sure he gets a lot more women than me! haha.

  • That may be, but he's rich as hell, drives a ferrari & is married.

  • But he's still a nerd :))
