I've tried others like Unity, DirectX Studio, GameStudio... the list goes on. The bottom line is that programming your own engine is the best way to go.
If the engine is very fast and flexible, chances are you'll have to suffer from no documentation.
Writing your own version of something that "acts" as an engine is way less gay than writing something gay like an engine, or using engines that bring not enough help.
thats great but honestly i prefer quality over quantity. 18 gb for rage and honestly 8-10 hrs of gameplay is shitty. Another thing if the game engine is so great how come it's physics is so fucked up? I move 2 mph on the car and somehow i can do a 360 or am going 200 mph and somehow be able to instantly stop?
@killerDbz45 No you have not seen better. Maybe crysis has slightly better graphics at first take - but IDTech5 is superior. Graphics are a small part of the engine. I can quite safely say, as I currently work at a IDTech4 licensee, that nothing out there is even in the same ball park as IDT5 let alone league. Just wait until ID drops screens and a movie for Doom 4. This engine is capable of 4 to 6x more visual fidelity than rage is using (you can thank consoles for that..)
RAGE! (and thats a good thing, although i wish i could get a tiny sneak peek at DOOM 4; if its happening of course) thanks for uploading! Carmack FTW!
I dislike cross platform engines, they are just a reapplication of resources we have already seen hundreds of games already based around. They also hold back visual progress by limiting games by the capabilities of the weakest hardware components.
Engines like this are just to make it easier for developers to milk their titles across multiple platforms; just like Unreal Engine 3.
Seeing how cross platform engines are specifically designed to make cross platform development easier; I don't see how you can call one good and one bad.
What you are calling good encourages what you call bad.
all game engines are multi platform, just how you use it to make games. this ID engine is a new type of technolgy to make things better for doing more with in game stuff and haveing lesser hardware.
Doom 3, Source and CryEngine 2 were all not cross platform engines. You can use them for cross platform games; but there is a big difference between these and a cross platform engine.
A engine that can consider itself cross platform was specifically built from the ground up or modified with a variety of features that makes cross platform development easier. This may be art asset or code generation so there is less work when developing for multiple platforms.
1 giant texture is a really shitty system. Try working on maps in ArmA with this system. It's very ahrd to modify your heightmaps if you have to align the texutre.
thats a good system if you have stuff that uses the same shader then you can put all of it on 1 texture and freeing up memory other than having multiple textures and wasteing resources.
Well with today's RAM and HDD speeds, you have to have 27 GB textures. Other the games might load fast. If they do THAT, you might spend more time playing. Then it would be FUN.
sorry hahaha, i seem to compare everything with everything xD. but yeah the infinity engine is awesome. i been talking to the guy who is in charge of the project. problem is, if the actual game is going to be like he says it will, there wont be much point in making other games, cause none will match it XD. owning real sized planets that suffer natarul disasters and stuff, thats just AMAZING.
engines are different, games are different. no need to compare. infinity engine is mainly programmed by one guy while rage has a team of 60+ people working on it. regardless both are impressive in their own right.
uhh which infinity engine? I googled infinity engine and got Baldur's Gate, a game which will be celebrating its 10th anniversity of release this year. please direct me to what you're talking about
@JordanWilde - I know, I don't know how Rage is going to handle having that much resources... I don't have the graphics card to handle that, anyway. :/
I believe he's referring to the megaTexture system. Although I think making textures this big is kinda stupid since you will either need high-def satellite data or largely procedural texturing to generate it anyway, it only keeps a tiny fraction in memory by streaming from the hard drive.

you have no idea what your saying about hating cross platform Engines thats called do what you want with out limits on other hardware.
but cross platform games is where it hurts cuz they have to make the game work on all the hardware finding a place in the middle.
