Isn't it beautiful how they chose the most powerful bars of music to represent a mother saving her baby from the storm. For some reason this always makes me cry
please everybody remember that this was made in the 1940s and that some of the things drawn would not have been found right in this day and age, but back then they had certain beliefs, just cause of that doesnt make it a bad film! its beautiful, and alot of poeple connect fantasia with their childhood. so please remember that while your watching. it is a beautiful film!!
It`s funny how they put zebra bodies on the black people, I mean really, was that really necessary? I guess that making them slaves in the movie wasn`t enough for them.
We`rer lucky to be born by the time we were born! =)
@vitorfray I think the zebra centaurs are much, much, prettier than the normal ones. I would want to have the design of the zebra centaurs.
In the earlier part of the movie, with the other little centaur was raciest. This, I think is just pretty design. In my case, I would not be upset to see a Latin burro bodied centaur. I would not allow it to phase me ether.
When I was little I loved the African centaurs, I wanted them to have a bigger role and dance around with the others. I thought they looked even prettier than the others.
This is a good adaptation of Greek mythology. While today we imagine Zeus as a noble and generous god, in the original myths he was really a rather bullying kind of guy who did as he pleased and felt no regret for it.
ah Sunflower the Disney character that never was, she was in this, there are pictures of her where she can be seen tending the hooves of another centauress, she was the typical sterotype vision of a 'black person' but like the slaves that rolled up the carpet she was removed out of it.
@BluTaiger you know, i didnt even know that centaur existed until you told me that and i looked her up :[ I have watched that movie so many times and i never had any idea! i read that the movie was re-released in the 60's and she was supposedly taken out then. i can't help it - i'm 20 and i still love the centaurs :]
@xAngelk I believe what happened here is that in the original version, there was this slave centauress who was later removed from the picture. I believe it was she who originally rolled out the carpet.
At any rate, it could be rationalized that Dionysus is a god and, drunk or not, can do that sort of thing.
@xAngelk there was originally a black slave centaur that did it, but it got banned from showing her because it was racist. there are other scenes where she was banned from being shown.
@xAngelk In the original there was a black centuar boy rolling the carpet up but disney removed it about 25 years ago cos they thought it was racist. :P
If you did not notice, when the red carpet rolls up to the throne for Bacchus(who is drawn to look like Silenus,a fat drunken teacher of Bacchus) there is no Sunflower black girl centaur while there is one in the same scene rolling out that carpet in the censored footage! Apparently the Disney company had her digitally erased from the scene! Stop motion model animaters like Nick Park use the computer to digitally erase metal supports that hold the puppets in place while they are hand animated!
@jonhayashi1 I noticed. But I always grew up with the censored version. It was only the other day when I discovered that there was another version to this. How sad is that?! But when you think about it, the number of people who complained about racism and such I suppose it was only natural that Disney wanted to remove it. It is quite disgraceful how ignorant people can be in regards to old classics. Of course there was racism and sexism, but they're classics because they're that old. *Sigh*
@Emikero I just watched Fantasia 2000 and the Pastoral Symphony, both with and without the censored scenes is much better then the NEW Fantasia! Most of the new sequences have no harmony with the music and are just tiresome and stupid! I love my 1940 re-remastered Fantasia dvd but I am tempted to throw Fantasia 2000 into the garbage can!! You can now see everything clearly in the backrounds of the 1940 classic because of the increased light in the image! Great animation and storytelling!
When I was little I had no idea that the African centaurs were meant to be slaves, I too busy thinking they were soooo....cool. I love the way they have used zebra horses, the other centaurs were plain just in different colours. I suppose a innocent mind works differently.
@kslovesgabba24 I was exactly the same, thought the zebras were awesome. Only thing I thought was a little off about this clip was Bacchus chasing all the young females lol - even as a young girl something seemed a bit odd about that
@kslovesgabba24 That was the same reaction I had as a little girl. I was like, "ZEBRA CENTAURS!? AWESOME!!" And the fact that the were black just made sense to me. I mean WHITE zebra centaurs would have been weird because zebras are from Africa. But then again they do have green and blue centaurs here too. XD
This fantasia segment seems to be telling the story of early christian pagan rituals. In early christian history, a "baccanal" was an orgy (yes, orgies were a part of early christian practice). The Roman government did not approve of baccanals partly because of the spread of incurable venereal diseases. And so this partly led to the persecution (execution) of christians that took part in these baccanals/orgies. This Fantasia segment seems to metaphorically illustrate that history.
this is a false depiction of dionysus he actually was young and my mythology professor said he did not partake in wine he was just its creator and was never depicted as a drunk lecherous old man
@Kataangrocksmysocks I wondered about that too, since I know Homer mentioned him being the most beautiful male god and he was traditionally depicted as an attractive young man. Disney seems to do this to Dionysus in all of their movies and books.
@BluTaiger I never thought it was slavery in anyway. They all seem to be servants to that one guy I always just thought they were black because they were zebra centaur people.

Well said, Zarkovagis9...when I was watching it as a child, I didn't even notice the semi-naked centaurettes because, well, I was a child! And my mum certainly didn't go hysterical because of a cartoon; a form of art. Now parents make cuch a big deal out of those matters that kids, too, start seeing natural things as "naughty" and "taboo". But now I'm ranting, so I'll just finish this with a comment about how much I still enjoy this film. <3
ah, back in the time when artists could draw and show whatever the hell they wanted to. Partial nudity, public drunkenness. Nowadays, you can't draw a dotted line without some mother throwing a hissy fit...
@XxNinjaixX In greek and roman mythology, Zeus is a dick. He cheats on his wife, gets drunk, kills his children, etc.
Hades is actually the good guy and is always like "I'm staying out of your drama". Poseidon is usually the villian, that's why I have problems with disney's Hercules, they made Hades the bad guy.
@60Jessie90 Someone's been watching Clash of the Titans too much. The kraken is from Scandinavian mythology, and does not appear anywhere in ancient Greece.
