So many of the artists who came to Muscle Shoals to record ended up covering songs like this, Steal Away, Dark End of the Street etc including Cher (before she turned into whatever).
Absolutely brilliant soulful artist. Considering their & times back then, she held her own hard & strong - no doubt on some level she most def. had to be an inspiration to Janis Joplin as well as quite a few others....rock on soulful soul ~j~
Sorry to hear Etta James has left us. What a great singer! I saw a movie about Chess Records which claimed she is the daughter of pool legend Minnesota Fats. If this is true, and she passed on at 73, how old is Minnesota Fats now? I think he is still living.
I could have done without the flute. Totally out of place in a soul ballad like this. At least they shoud have mixed it down if not have canned it entirely. Compare it to the tenor sax....now that's a soul instrument, not a friggin flute.
I have always liked Etta's version of this song best. Both she and Areatha did great versions, but there are still big differences. For me, Areatha's version is a woman asking a man to respect her. Etta's version is TELLING him he better darn well respect her.
lucky to have lived in the era i did, came from the 50'sand 60's. now i am old, and theses songs of Etta and Dylan give me reason to live...hope you all get the same form your era.
I respect both Ms. Etta's version for what you brought to it and the same for Aretha's version. Both ladies put their signature on it in their own special way.
I Love both Aretha, and Etta James and they both sing it from the heart and soul.
I am, however still a huge Etta fan !
They are both very sick. please let's not fight about them.......let's pray for them both and heal ourselves at the same time, OK? Peace in troubled times.........They both would love to know we love them SO much.........
I like this but I have to agree Aretha made it softer and smoother and I've always loved it better. Anytime you can remake a song and people FORGET who made it first, you've made it your own. Many artists do that and Aretha did it with "Do Right" and "Respect" and several others. Sorry!!
God people are so retarded... Aretha's version is blah blah blah times better. Let me be very clear, I'm 30 and I had never even heard of this woman until about a week ago - and this version blows Aretha's version out of the water to me. Just a matter of preference I guess. I also think Etta's a far better singer, she's more versatile than Aretha... And now that I've offered my two cents worth on the subject, on to more interesting things:)
@ALIENDNA14 you are entitlede to your opinion...and not wrong if you like this version better...but Etta is a far better singer than Aretha?...more versatile? With all due respect I don't think you are being objective in that view point. Aretha sings jazz, gospel, r&b, Broadway show tunes...all impeccably. why don't you just stick with YOU like Etta better?..no one can argue with you on that
@consuelokiller no you mis-read me. Check the question marks after my statements. I'm CHALLENGING the notion the Etta is a better singer than Aretha. Etta is NOT a better singer than Aretha. That's no knock on Etta James. Love me some Etta James. Just NOT more than Aretha. Are you kidding? It's like when that clueless girl Beyonce called Tina "the queen" with Aretha in the audience...somebody needed to clue that girl in.Tina is an icon but she ain't The Queen. there's only one of those. ARETHA
@sonwamac OK I MIS READ.WE ARE ALL ENTITLED TO OUR OPINIONS THATS WHY WE DO THIS BUT I STICK TO WHAT I SAID. NO ONE, NO ONE SOUNDS AS GOOD AS ETTA JAMES. IN MY BOOK SHES THE QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ALIENDNA14 IMHO just the fact that you just heard of Etta and think she's a "far better singer than Aretha" shows that you should do some more research (listening to more music). BTW Etta herself probably wouldn't agree with you. The singers of their genre and era had mutual respect. Money and fame wasn't as easy to come by back in the day. Audiences were more discerning and harder to please. We were used to REAL TALENT, not like 2day where many should have just stayed in the SHOWER
I've just recently heard this song on a movie called cape fear....But i've heard by two or three different people and this one take's the cake...Gotta love it
How I love this song! I like nearly every version, even what people call the "overblown rendition" that Joe Cocker put out. Wish I could find his version of it here too. Don't know who ya are Catman, but for this, I thank you!

@kingpleasure I think that the song starts out being understated by using the flute, but it soon builds up by adding the horns and sax.
