I've been playing this for a few hours and it's a lot of fun. Having had well over 800 battles in the previous Puzzle Quest, I would consider myself a veteran, however, I think the muti-vectored way in which gems come onto the board makes this one quite frustrating at times. It's early days yet and I haven't fought a boss yet, so hopefully things will swing my my more often than not. But if you are a fan of Puzzle Quest I would recommend you at least give this a shot.
