@ForeverComplaining A lot of the mines were profitable but the government was determined to close down the mining industry regardless because they feared the miners unions and saw them as too powerful. Apart from that the mining industry made us self reliant for our own energy needs, at present we are reliant on other countries like Russia for energy.

@ForeverComplaining Yes I do think the government would get rid of a profitable industry if it threatened the State. The unionised industries were far too powerful in their eyes ant they feared them.

As for China/Poland producing goods cheaper, that is true but does free trade and globalization mean we have to compete with the third world on wages? If it does I don't think it had much benefit to us.

Keeping the mines open actually caused difficulities for low-income families/people, like mine, particularly who worked in private sectors, as they were burdened with high rates of tax to keep a minority of the public in employment, which was unprofitable and backwards.

Look up "Tower Colliery" in Blenau, see how the workers there bought their own pit with their redundancy money pooled, and kept it going ,against Thatchers protests, funding their community with clinics, schools and facilities for 18 years after Thatcher lied and said it was 'unsustainable'.
