After her victory over a weak country like Argentina barely a year ago, she was acting all tough and bad ass before she went to meet Deng. Deng showed her who is the daddy.
@AnimalWelfare1000 The mines made no profit, so why should they stay open?
They wasted a large sum of tax payers money how can you possibly justify penalizing a large majority of workers just to reward the minority of miners?
If we went by your logic, there would be no money as it would have been wasted on creating fake jobs and we would be in a worser state than that which Greece is currently in.
@ForeverComplaining A lot of the mines were profitable but the government was determined to close down the mining industry regardless because they feared the miners unions and saw them as too powerful. Apart from that the mining industry made us self reliant for our own energy needs, at present we are reliant on other countries like Russia for energy.
@aeronuk1 They didn't, most did not. The workers were paid more than in China/Poland and coal in China/Poland sold for far less. It was completely a waste of tax payers money.
Do you honestly thing a government would get rid of something profitable? I know MT was privatization crazy but saying she purposely did it to upset people is just absolutely stupid and you know that!
however you do bring forward a good argument, it did make us self-sufficient, however I don't think it was worth (con)
@ForeverComplaining Yes I do think the government would get rid of a profitable industry if it threatened the State. The unionised industries were far too powerful in their eyes ant they feared them.
As for China/Poland producing goods cheaper, that is true but does free trade and globalization mean we have to compete with the third world on wages? If it does I don't think it had much benefit to us.
@aeronuk1 Well I don't believe for a second these industries made profit, and even if that was the case I still take the government's side, unions are incredibly corrupt, the people who run them live in big mansions, (so much for caring about the poor LOL). And given their track record with the previous government, they obviously are a threat so I do kind of agree with what you are saying.
@aeronuk1 Well I don't believe we should, that's why I support their closeure. Keeping the mines open actually caused difficulities for low-income families/people, like mine, particularly who worked in private sectors, as they were burdened with high rates of tax to keep a minority of the public in employment, which was unprofitable and backwards.
@ForeverComplaining The answer was to address why the mines were unprofitable (if they were) and then put it right...not close down an industry that made us energy self sufficient. Your argument is a bit like saying the army is unprofitable so we should close it down.
@aeronuk1 But you can't, to 'put it right' the workers would need to be paid significantly less and why should we pay people dirt when the price of living is so expensive here? even then it still wouldn't be 'put right'.
And no it isn't, as the army aren't there for profit, neither is the NHS, or law, it's there to defend us. The mines we can survive without.
@ForeverComplaining My point is they were not just there for profit alone, they made us self sufficient for our energy needs. Or do you prefer that we have to rely on Russia now? You are advocating globalist policies that have wrecked this countries industrial base. Like the french President said last week.. "Britain hasn't got any industry"
I'm not sure I even believe the mining industry was unprofitable, the government wanted to shut down the industry because it was heavily unionised.
@aeronuk1 Oh I'm certain it wasn't. but I'm really not sure... I just don't think it's worth the burden on tax payers, plus it's backwards, we need to modernise etc, BUT you do make a good point it makes us self-sufficient. However I do actually think Thatcher made the right choice here, I think we need a more high-tech industry to be honest with you.
@aeronuk1 Same thing happened here in the US. Our manufacturing base was gutted. NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) has benefited only those who make a ton of money by outsourcing jobs and has not benefited the American worker. NAFTA wrecked havoc upon Mexico to, opening it up to cheaper agricultural products from big US ag corps which in the end put thousands of small Mexican farmers & those who worked for them out of business.
@ForeverComplaining So why are the tories re-opening the pits they closed in the 80s? You didn't know they were just being put on ice then, until such time as the workers had been beaten? Look up "Tower Colliery" in Blenau, see how the workers there bought their own pit with their redundancy money pooled, and kept it going ,against Thatchers protests, funding their community with clinics, schools and facilities for 18 years after Thatcher lied and said it was 'unsustainable'.
@aeronuk1 (2) the money people paid in tax for it. However I think there is some truth in your argument as I remember reading an argument, that although the mining industry was unprofitable etc, it DID make us self-sufficient and apparently if we go to war we will be in a bad position due to the loss of our mining industry.
@ForeverComplaining the banks makes no profits, its all one big Ponzi scheme and yet its the tax payer keep bailing them out, just so that they reward themselves a big massive bonuses/ bonuses gained of the hard backs of the tax payers you hypocrite prick. At least the miners were actually doing real work.
@YEELKEED LOL. Sorry but saying that it's better to keep open the mining industry than the banks for the public is pathetic. Closing the mining industry only affected a few thousand, if the banks fell apart it would effect almost everyone.
@YEELKEED However I actually don't support state intervention, so I'm completely against bailing out these banks. So I'm not sure about me being a hypocrite. haha.
@AnimalWelfare1000 It's the same here mate, all the old industrial towns are the same, bereft, nothing, zilch. I know things are even worse over there though, it's true.

@ttiiyy Wouldn't be surprised, she was as fucked up in the head as that idiot Reagan was. they were like a black comedy duo, both thick as shit with a corp[orate hand up their ass like ventriloquist's dummies. "Say this, say that".
@pezz12345 Oh shut up she made Britain the third richest country on earth and brought this back after it had been brought to its knees in the 70s it seems people only want to think of all the negative things she did instead of thanking her for making the economy stronger and making this country what it was only to have it all handed away by weak spineless leaders like Blair and brown she wasn't fucked up at all she was very smart and knew how to deal with problems and worked hard to become PM.
You ever heard of punctuation? It's pertinent to mention she set literacy levels back to pre-1950s averages, closed down schools, hospitals and industries throwing record amounts of people on the dole. "Third richest country" sounds ok until you consider she concentrated most of that wealth into the bloated pockets of the top 5 percent of the population, to the detriment of the people who had to work for a living. Social housing flogged off, industries butchered. Mad cow.
..and don 't ask me to defend Blair for fuck's sake, he was just as bad as any Tory in manhy ways, although the working man and woman is always much worse off under the tories. We would be, there's nobody in the tory party who's ever done a proper day's work in their lives, born into privilege, looking after their own, what did this vile, evil old witch do that was so hard? Open her scabby legs for a millionaire she wasd lucky enough to marry. Whew, she must've worked up a sweat.

Such incomplete information. Deng did indeed say that he could march his army into HK anytime he liked and reclaim it to which Thatcher smartly replied: Yes you could, and then the whole World would see what you are truly like.
He was as shaken by the encounter as she was, for the simple fact he had never been stood up to like that by a woman.
I really like Thatcher but the Iron Lady is no match to Deng. Deng is a survivor of the Long March and of at least two purges. Deng does not become a leader of over 1 billion Chinese because he was elected. He became one because he puts his life on the line. That is the real difference.
@specialfx34 Just because we speak out about who we want to die that makes us worse than her? Sorry.. but Margaret Thatcher is probably thinking of a dozen people she wants dead so don't judge unless you have two sides of the story... mkay?... clear?
