Maybe some of you educated people can mention the fact that: FOOD CREATES YOUR DAMN BRAIN!!!! ARGUE THAT AND YOU DIDN'T EAT GOOD FOOD. WHY DO WE FEED OUR KIDS CRAP AND EXPECT THEM TO HAVE A BRAIN????????????????????????????????????
@PaleoAthletics We use to but interest groups raised the government boogie man again so we allowed the free market to handle it. So Pepsi Co and Coke Co would bid for monopolistic dominance on campuses excluding the other. I asked why was there no more healthy food and was told that kids love fat and sugar and that is what they choose. Anyone who brought up that children should have some sort was balanced diet was considered a socialist against the free market, even though it didn't really exist
The public education system is a indoctrination program. Yes, kids need to learn to read and write. From there on though, most other things they can learn on their own if they wish. The schools teach a false version of history, science from a very narrow perspective, a false version of civics, the math methods are overcomplicated and suck, they are removing music programs and all things engaging the right brain. It is truly a worker bee training center for stamping out pinheads.
Most of the interesting and applicable things I have learned in my life are outside of the classroom, the foundation was certainly there, but once one gets into higher education in the United States everything is a diploma mill, if you want to get anything out of your classes you have to go above ad beyond the work given because it is almost all just busy work that is time consuming and teaches very little of value. Even AP and honors classes won't prepare you for college either.
Even thou most 17 year old's act stupid as hell I think they shouldn't be called kids cause the know the difference between right and wrong the society just like to treat them like babies
@ThirstyDad65 Its NOT rote memorization its systematic intelligence and it is what is 'IN" your computer. Without the Chinese and the S.Koreans your computer RAM would be Way more expensive...so don't knock it....they can refine , reduced and reproduce far more efficiently than western nations. They just have a different type of intelligence and skill. That's why western education is in trouble because the Ben Steins of this world FAIL to recognize this. Intellect has many forms.
"better education" is grossly oversimplified but he does make some good points. A lot of kids in China do better in math and science than American children but they aren't much good at critical thinking or questioning their own system. The US just needs to re-emphasize math and science and it will be just fine. Besides, given time, the Chinese will get lazy as their material life improves.
The main problems with Public Education in America is that are priorities are mixed up. Schools are given Students based on their location instead of the job they do Educating. And Educators are paid based on their Time of Service instead of the job that they do Educating. As well as not having Competition and Choice in Public Education. Parents are forced to send their kids to Schools based on where they live instead of what they feel is the best Schools for their kids.
Every time you tell an American kid to do his/her homework, you would expect to see eye rollings, talking back, and or procrastination. I was guilty of it too while growing up. In China, doing homework shouldn't need to be reminded.
If you mean to sit quietly so not to disturb others.
To learn math, science, english, chemistry, physics, computer. To ask question that pertain to subject matter. [Hopefully the teacher will know what is being taught so can answer the questions]. To do assigned work that pertain to the subject matter.
If you mean you have to follow rules, regulations that you don’t approve of. Like : clothing, dress code, tattoos, piercing, fighting , calling people manes, showing affection, harassment, disrespect of teachers, cell phones, np3 players.

Very interesting that many in India are going into engineering...
@tangerinegirl59 The problem is there are only so many engineering jobs. There will be a lot of competition to get these jobs and those who don`t are left in the dust. I know an Indian man who is an engineer but ended up coming to come to Japan illegally & to do manuel labor b/c he couldn`t get an engineering job. There should be encouragement to seek an edu. in all areas no just one.
Yeah, I agree.. so much competition will cause a lot of people not to get the job/quality of a job that they want... and even with a lot of work too..
@paisleyyama In 50 years there will not be a manufacturing plant in the USA they will be all over seas. Unless shipimg raise the price to where it is cheaper to build here.

@samten10a I don`t think shipping is the answer. Shipping prices have steadily been rising for decades & other countries can always say "we`ll ship for less". The problem is more complex. By shipping jobs overseas, it`s better for the business that can bypass some stiff regulations and taxes. Other countries offer better deals to the corporations & businessmen are like wise shoppers, they look for the best deal. America is offering bad deals to businessmen so they take their biz elsewhere.

I wasted most of my time in high school. I studied the night before tests and completed assignments the day before in a rush yet managed to crank out A's and B's at a private school. The international students from china and korea mocked the curriculum as being too easy.
Prior to Abraham Lincoln, America prided itself in being the only democracy in the world with near-universal literacy, almost all of which was arrived at individually through self-tutorial or quasi-private school (see Gary Wills, Lincoln at Gettysburg). What has happened to gut American public educcation? Is our situation a residual of the Know-Nothing movement? Whatever has caused this mess, American education needs help!
the real problem with Education is what i call zooning !! see in country like belgium you can take your kid to any school and the gov will pay for it !! in the U.S the gov will not do that becouse of the Teachers Union !! you can take it only to schools in your Zoon keeping black and latin and poor white in bad schools !! and it dosnt start in hight school !! it start in the Primary school
Don't wonna sound too picky, but Sputnik is in '57. In '59 there is Luna, the first satellite to orbit the moon. Not nearly as famous as Sputnik, but it does let Russian names all the crater on the dark side of the moon.
Fortunately for us, India and China have their own issues. However, they are working on them.
The US should have *unquestionably* the best educational system in the world; we should be as far ahead educationally as we are militarily. Our system now is inflexible and stagnant.
...but if you would have a better education, would you still have enough money for the military stuff? and furthermore would there be someone left who still is dumb enough to join it??
World is getting smaller every day and Americans no longer can compete with smarter outsiders. The educational system of United Estate is flailing the American people. I believe this was a plan by British. I truly believe America will become the biggest third world country in the world before it rise up again which I do not believe it would happen in the next 20 years if our planet still exist. Hollywood is the reason of our present and future misery. Hollywood is the Satan's headquarter.

Thank you for your question. I have taught in private school and in private settings. I also have grown children and am aware of the problems you cite through their experience and through colleagues - professionals in teaching/policy/curriculum development arenas in the public school setting.
I agree in some senses with your remarks. Mr. Compton's film is not a helpful effort however, in that it propagates narrow spectrum global framings of class and opportunity.
I'm sorry, not to oppose in any rude way. China and India are learning from the US, just like US should learn from China and India.
@oswald1973 This is what I see as a problem in our education system. It's just the kids wanting to slack off and some of its the teachers. Since the U.S. is cutting back on education how is the U.S. gonna fund NCLB now? Are the kids doing it to be successful or are they doing it to get funding?
