Hey who knows? It could have been a wretched F up. He still recovered like a champ. Which is the mark of a great musician. Really, all the cool stuff in jazz is the wrong notes with a killer recovery.
These guys sound like they did 30 years ago. A true testament of their mastery and talent. I didn't hear anyone out of time, he does some of the same stuff on the original album
Hello proctor940, my name is ParallaxDrums, and i will give you a lesson on how this works. Jazz is a type of music based off of IMPROVISATION. That is a big word that means you make up what you play as you go along. What Lenny just did there was an IMPROV fill that is syncopated along with the rest of the instruments. IT IS ALOUD TO DO THAT as long as you fall on the magical beat called, ONE. It may seem off timing because he is using TRIPLETS. Thank you and goodnight.
To the poster ("proctor940") who stated that Lenny White's timing is off here, I will put to you the age old question for the musical novice, 101: "Where's ONE?" Yeah, didn't think you could find it if it jumped out of You Tube and smacked you upside your musically inept head.
I have only the deepest love, respect & admiration for these consummate musicians. They truly are superlative & continue to inspire me & countless others through their long & successful careers. But having enjoyed this great band from their very beginning, I dare to say that I prefer the "juice" of their earlier performances. I feel the same way about the legendary Cream. The fire & enthusiasm of their younger days are just that much more exciting to me. But I still love these shows, too!
Whoever said lenny is out of time on 1 50 doesn't know shit about music, period. don't mean to sound like an A#$hole but if you are going to criticize something and post it, you better know what you're talking about.
Lenny white is not out of time by any means at the spot mentioned. it's like sti1kpr0 said, he's hitting the off beats @ 1:50 and subdv. the quarters in 8th tripls w/ diff. accents, creating a polyrhythm efffect @1;55-2;00.if Al's looking at him it's because he's probably wasn't expecting it - which is OK 'cause they're supposed to be, like, you know...improvisers
Lenny dealt with the lacking effects of Carpal Tunnel the entire tour and I for one was pleased he even toured. I saw 4 shows on this tour and the only got better as it rolled along.
He's in perfect time at 1:50. He's playing the off beats. Count the time (1, 2, 3, 4) during that section and you'll see what I mean. He's also swinging the eighth notes as he plays them.
@proctor940 honestly, I think he wanted to go against the beat. it's just a measure. He clearly get upside down on purpose to create that effect. Then we can discuss if it's a nice trick or not.
@proctor940 I'd rather say he deliberately plays the offbeat there. That's not what it sounds like when someone loses time .. and more than that it's exactly one measure and he neatly fits it in with two fills. Well, I'd say that's one of the things Fusion is about: To defy your listening habits and expectations.
Uhhh, was that Bitches Brew like at 5:15? Dammit, comparing this to the joint that is on here from their '74 performance. These kats are still funky as hell and uhhhhh, don't know what more to say than DAMMMMIIIITTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!
u r not the only 1 who did nt have tha fucking money !!!!!!!a shold have sell my car or my anything to c them ws the biggest dream of my life to c them !!!and i live in fucking london and hey have been only miles away from me.............
I was at the show in Philly with my son. It was his first time and he had the same smile on his face that I had on mine when they were in Philly in '83. BEST FUSION BAND EVER!!!!
i wouldnt say that. Dream Theater are technically over the top, their music is designed to not sound easy. With Return To Forever, its different. They make such grooving, jazzy moods with such interesting chords and structures and solos. They are just different.
They played here last night in Atlanta. Don't tell anyone but it was so beautiful that I cried...it was religion, connecting with a greater God in the only religion I respect, music. So many will miss this, not care, don't get it, etc. It's nice to be in a special club. Thank you.
Well i felt like i had finally been 'enlightened'. It was the magical experience i have ever had to witness a piece of living history. i feel as though i have LIVED. i also have never felt so CONNECTED to the music of a live concert. It was very spiritual.
Don't worry, they WILL GET IT. I'm 24 and I finally got what my dad has been trying to show me just a few years ago, all the great great music I've been exposed to my entire life finally caught up with me and now I can't get enough. I even play drums in a fusion band now! Keep training their musical ears!
They were in Vilnius, Lithuania from last night. Oh, what a gig !.. I'm still in memories.. I love this tune "Vulkan Worlds" in this new way, their today's version. Thanks for posting !
I flew in from Anchorage, Alaska to see this concert. The last I saw them was October 5, 1975. I brought my ticket stub from that concert to this one 33 years later and had the good fortune of all the band members signing the old ticket stub. They couldn't believe I kept it all those years. Al's comment to me was "I can't remember anything since 1985....ah, I mean before 1985".
i used to listen to this record over and over i was in the orpheum that night what a dream come true

Playing on the &s is just playing the upbeats. This is syncopation. Very common in jazz and African derived music. Peace

i haven't taken theory, so please correct if i'm mistaken.
sounds like he just switched to accenting the upbeat for one measure?
whatever it is, it grooves solidly and is metronomically aligned :D
JonP1961 1 year ago
@JonP1961 IM-not-so-humble-O, you're correct. I'd bet money if there was any way to verify. Lenny is absolutely on time, meant to do that, etc.

Lenny is out of time at around (1:50). Kinda disappointed in that.

In time, out of time, off beats, accents.. all great in explanation, but does it sound good? Yeah. :) That's all I am worried about.

That section grooved exceptionally well; expect the best.
BJtheBassist 2 years ago
Definately NOT out of time.
Flubbman97 1 year ago
@proctor940 Looked pretty intentional. He was just emphasizing the off beats. Syncopation.
After watching it again, yeah, it was completely intentional.
Colerosity 1 year ago
@proctor940 He wasn't out of of time at all - it was a syncopated fill. If you count through it, it comes out on the one.
ytnsanw 1 year ago
@proctor940 He's just toying with the meter and playing on the and of times. You can think of of a 7/8 + 9/8. Nothing wrong, just fun.

@proctor940 he is NOT out of time... hes playing outside on purpose? you know, like a jazz drummer?
you see him intentionally wait a second and then start playing on the off beats lol
