how is the tone not flat? with the holes in the bottom to let air and sound out, it should make it flat, and the second octave not consistent with the first.

erik i my self have made many flutes from bamboo. wood. and bird bone. i also am a wood carver i make canes, staffs and walking sticks. but mine are nothing compared to what you make i love your flutes. and since you live here in florida and i do travel a bit i hope some day to meet you and who knows i just might own a erik made fulte. I want to try and make one, except without all the dragon skin carvings. I could never be able to do that much craftsmanship. I know mine will turn out to be terrible since I have now clue how to make flutes, let alone a giant walking flute. But I think I might try anyway.

As a staff, how durable is it? I'd love to have this on a hike but is it really a usable staff I could put my full weight on if I were climbing a tough hill? Would it survive being dropped, or hitting branches aside? What's the cost of such a stafflute?

I love side blown flutes, they have the best sound in my humble opinion. I like wooden better than bamboo, and the metal ones are of course the best. I like platinum. I can't afford them for obvious reasons.
