@torvanw this song actually talks about the whole Divina Commedia by Dante, from the dark wood in which Dante is wandering (despair, probably for the loss of Beatrice) - where Virgilio, sent by Beatrice (who is now in Paradise), goes to help and guide him through Hell (Inferno) and Purgatorio - to Paradise. Hell is just that "ice and fire" Dante and Virgilio has gone beyond when they find themselves in front of the Purgatorio's mountain ("Then the mountain rose before me").
