at around 4:00 he says about Eb. strictly speaking it should be D#. The whole idea of Harmonic minor is to create a leading note - in the same manner as in the major scale. The leading note stays just a semitone below the keynote (and "leads" us to the keynote, or, as some people call it, Root). That's why if we want to transform E minor natural into E minor harmonic we have to raise the 7th degree a semitone, thus D becomes D#.
There is no difference between the picks, but there is difference between the picking. Although most players recommend using a thinner, softer pick for an acoustic guitar, I would say, try all of them and use what's most comfortable for you.
usually for an electric you want a short hard pick and for acoustic you want something bigger and softer, especially if you're going to be strumming up and down.
Also for acoustic it's not necessary for electrics it is
no, you can use either for any, but most acoustic strumming is done with a thinner/lighter pick, whereas electric solo work is usualy done with a thicker more sturdy pick wich doesnt bend as much.
Not really. However sometimes when mic'ing strummed chords on an acoustic you want the sound of the pick too - in that instance, you use a relatively thin pick and mic closer to the soundhole, rather than over the fretboard...
Its just a personal choise for each player.... Lighter gauge picks are more useful in strumming chords as the sound of a lighter pick is thinner and less over powering, however, trying to use a flimsy pick will make lead playing less powerful in sound.... use what you are comfortable with and find your own perfect pick!
For some reason, and I don't know why, I sound best and "heaviest" (I'm a death metal/punk/thrash/metal guitarist) when using an orange .63 Dunlop pick, or the yellow .70 Dunlop pick. I just sound best with medium thickness picks.
I agree when I play extremely fast I need a flexible pick that will give slightly to extreme speed picking, but when I want to squeel or pinch harmonic or even manhandle the strings, I absolutely need a small very firm pick like a jazz III, and when I strum chords I again want a thin pick. So literally what I will be playing somewhat dictates what pick I pick.
You're awesome! Im startinga band, my first, I'm 15 and I have myself and another guitar player, waaiting on bass and drums. Could you check out a couple of my video's and tell me if I'm at all ready to have a band. Thank you, if you have the time. Risen To Fallen
i think a stratocaster is a very nice beginning guitar, it has good all around play, get the action lowered and get 9 to 48 strings. its a great beginning setup
Do you have any clue what you're talking about? A stratocaster is not a beginner setup. A stratocaster is $1200
The only Stratocaster that would be good for a beginner is the SQUIRE Stratocaster. Squire is Fender's lower-end stuff for first time players or people on a budget. So Fender owns Squire, its just Fender guitars are made in America and Squire ones are made in like China or Vietnam or Korea or something. Just like Gibson makes Epiphone.
A stratocaster is not a "nice" beginning guitar. It's a $1200 guitar which is played by SRV, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendix
The only type of Stratocaster thats good for a beginner is a Squire. (which is made by Fender just a lower end brand for people who are new to on a budget). Its still made by Fender but made in China or Korea or something.
for beginning a very expensive guitar might not be the best, but it might hold longer for the level of your skill when you have been playing for years and years :P maybe an Epiphone would be a good starter guitar, they are actually pretty good, the LP standards, are good for a beginner, but the only problem is the neck might be bit too small for a beginner, of just need to consider the size of your hands :P
I actually played a gibson LP studio..... and I totally prefer my ibanez, the lp whines too much when doing rythm through a distortion, or rythm at all, even with tone killed.
But hey, that's just taste, and the studio is the bottom of the lp line, I'm sure there's one bound to sound better.
only one problem... when you played E harmonic minor through the second octave you put a Bb in it, let me just clarify that E harmonic minor does not have a Bb.
my problem with music is i have plenty of technique and skill, plenty of knowledge of scales, modes, and theory, technical skills ....but i just cant create any thing and it is so frustrating, any tips anyone
I know what you're saying, I have the same problem, I figured out all kinds of cool tricks and scales, chords, etc. But unfortunately can't make anything from scratch that sounds good. WE NEED TIPS!!
Experiment with things that aren't really in scales or modes. I used to play with a guitarist who knew everything about scales and etc. Yet when we played he usually asked me what I had just played because it sounded good. I simply had gone out of "his scale" and improvised a few notes. I'd even recommend learning jazz riffs, or chromatic stuff in that style.
hi!!i love ur videos man!!i am kinda new to the world of electric guitars and have a fender squier strat and an sp-10 amplifier.i wanted to know whether i can have more overdrive, fuzz and reverb with the help of an effects pedal??or is it better to buy a better amp first??thought i'd ask u coz u da guru man!!
Buy a multi effect pedal, they have tons of effects, and tons channels to store your sounds on, some of the best multi effect pedals to buy in my oppinion is Boss GT8 or Boss ME50. You can get any sound you want from those pedals.
not to be "that guy" who has to criticize every video, but there's a problem with the second scale you've shown as an E Harmonic Minor. The first octave is correct- but the second octave you're showing an augmented 4th (A#) and a major 6th (C#).
The only note being changes is the 7th. the second octave of the scale would be the same as the natural minor (first scale shown) except with the D raised one semitone to a D# (11th fret on the high E, as opposed to the 10th).
Hi - thanks for your kind words! In this lesson I just played the epiphone through a line 6 spider 3 amp - no effect pedals - just a splash of reverb from the amp and some amp distortion - thats it!
Practicing on steel string acoustic has it's pro's and cons, acoustic's have bigger necks, thicker strings and higher actions than an electric.
