There are general purpose waxes out there, but otherwise, I think you have to just apply the right wax for the day's conditions.

Estimate the temperature range you may ski in and and choose a wax that has a range in the middle of the high and low temps. In xc skiing having only one wax is a big compromise. All skis can be rewaxed for the day's temperature. 3 glide waxes is basic for fitness skiers.
