I'm not a doctor, but I don't believe things like this are caused by individual injuries. I believe they are caused more by problems caused by a lack of naturally occurring lubricants and /or cartilage. He was mentioning that there were near to 8 millimetres of bone missing. Likely it was slowly ground down through the use of the joint. But as I said, this is only a couple undergraduate courses talking.

@michdudeada yes, they are really rough, but imagine the impact on your knee falling into a 7ft pit: believe me: the dammage that can do is devestating, I'm telling you. I race motorcycles: one crash and you wouldn't believe how a leg can look in just 3-4 seconds. takes sometimes 3-4 YEARS to get any better. Luckily we have real brutal and rough doctors to fix us... They can never earn enough money for what they do!

It heals because the bone surrounding the knee replacement (part of which was sawed), will grow back and become stronger. Bone constantly breaks itself down, and rebuilds itself throughout a person's life. The rest is just allowing the body to heal itself, which begins at the cellular level.
