I always use one of these 3 combos:
Red koopa in back until in 1st for red shells with baby bowser in front until first, when in first its time for some bowser shells.
Toad in back with diddy kong in front, just catch up with golden mushroom, then in 1st then get diddy in back for big bananas.
3rd just replace toad with either baby mario or baby luigi for toad better for catching up, small cars are my thing
