The reason Hotel California is more popular is simple, the Eagles are a Pop band, Tull is a true Rock And Roll band, huge difference, popularity has nothing to do with the quality of the music, anybody hear of Brittany Spears?
@bc1358 No I'm not kidding mate. It's a bit of a stretch to sound like Hotel California. Chord sequence may be the same, but take a listen to "25 or 6 to 4," "While MY Guitar Gently Weeps," and even "Geek Stink Breath." All three have the same descending chords but hardly alike in timing. "Hotel Cali" has more of a spanish style to its playing.

Well if it's true about the Eagles it means one thing. The Eagles are a better band then you Ian.Hotel California is played 20 million Kazillion times more then your song. It's out won more music awards then your song, and if you ask a person that is musically inclined from anywhere around the world ,Have you ever hear of Hotel California by the Eagles, most people would say yes, where as your song, not even close. It's what you call UK/USA rivalry.Ian thinks Jethro Tull is the Best band in the world.
@demmylowther ease up mouthy guy. I don't think Ian has a problem with it, in fact he's always sounded quite proud of the fact the eagles borrowed the tune. If you can be bothered to search, the Eagles are on record confirming they nicked the tune from tull.
Using your method of divining song quality - 'I have always loved you' by that shouty woman who's name i forget would probably the greatest song in the world, ever. Or that one from Titanic. Which is patent nonsense.
Ian has some sort of madical condition which restricts his vocal chords because he plays the flute as well. Inseperable, I know, but I'd rather he sing and give us that rich voice.
I hate to admit it, but unknownkingdom has a point. I think Ian has tried to force his voice too much in recent years. If one listens to "A Jethro Tull Christmas Album", Ian doesn't sound bad at all. Then again, that is a studio recording and this is live.
fuck the eagles !

My favorite Tull tune. I like how Martin played it with a different sounding guitar.

Martin Barre makes Buckingham look like an amateur. If the Eagles stole this riff they owe Tull a fortune.

Eek, Ian's voice sounds crappy compared to his younger days. Plus he sings almost the whole song flat.
Sorry, but the singing is awful.
