And Bill Hicks is not at all subtle. His stand-up is more so a heavy-handed lecture on socio-political themes, then it is a comedy act. It gets tiresome after awhile.

I like Hicks a lot and think he was dead on 99% of the time but here he's on shaky ground. Many times he revised and toned down his act to be on some show (Letterman, anyone) and therefore he falls into a similar category. An artist would not want to be called an artist for any reason. An artist is who a person makes his or herself. It is very grandiloquent of Hicks to expect and endear that title. So have everybody say he isn't an artist. If he cares, that is shameful. Additionally, commercialism is an art form in itself, and requires the use of other art forms in its work. Comedy or not, his message is skewed.
