  • Thanks! That was REALLY helpful.

    Cheers!

  • Thanks from Gothenburg Butch. This is a really helpful review that clearly shows the enhancement with the Ultra Wide Con. Lens. Just what was needed :)

  • Hey man, thanks for this video.. It was just what I was looking for..!

  • @butchnews so i should use the 18 mm because i ordered the 16mm (pancake lens) just a couple of days ago?

  • @AfterMathLogoDesign No... the lens works properly on the 16mm lens. It is not meant to be used on the 18-55. You will be quite happy with the 16mm lens too. It is wider angle than the 18mm and most of the time you will prefer that as your normal lens.

  • I get the wide angle one and have no issue with that but still butch I have no idea why anyone would want a fish eye lens (i am not trying to be smart I am just curious if anyone has done anything awesome with a fish eye) only place i see for a fish eye lenses is in a security camera to give me view for your camera? am i wrong?

  • @ShaDoWworldshadow There is a somewhat wider angle of view with the fish eye than the ultra-wide. Mostly I use the ultra wide to avoid the barrel distortion on the edges but sometimes one finds one's self in very tight situations and that extra bit is very helpful. Watch my latest no pants subway ride video... I used the fish eye inside the subway cars... also the Vancouver Skytrain Halloween Party video on this channel. Examples of shooting in very tight spaces.

  • @ShaDoWworldshadow sports photography, skateboarding and bmx photographers use fisheyes. theyre fun.

  • Hi! I have the regular 18-55 mm and i just got the fisheye converter and there is a black ring on the outside. do i need a 16 mm to fix this?

  • @AfterMathLogoDesign Hi...yes. The Fish Eye and Ultra-Wide are designed to be used on the 16mm lens. The black ring is called vignetting and you will have the least amount of that by using the 18mm setting.

  • Thanks for the information I found your vid very helpful. Do you notice any vignette when using the ultra wide converter? Your mic sounds good what are you using? Thanks.

  • @gm9media There is no vignetting with the Ultra Wide when used on the 16mm lens. There is vignetting when used on the 18-55 and this is not recommended at all. My standard rig is the 16mm lens with the Ultra Wide attachment. If you watch my videos, most all of them were shot with that combination. The microphone is the Sony Accessory microphone made for this camera. Keep an eye on the wind sock... it comes off easily and there is no replacement part.

  • @butchnews Butch, thank you again. I really do appreciate the information it has been most helpful. Best regards..

  • what is the model or product number for the ultra wide angle lens adapter, please? is it something that requires the fish eye as well?

thanks for the videos, very informative.

  • @gearheadflicks The Ultra Wide adapter is designed to fit on the 16mm lens. You can buy the camera with either the 18-55 or 16 lens... if you want both lenses it's cheaper to get the camera with the 18-55 and purchase the 16mm lens separately. There are two accessory lenses for the 16mm lens... the ultra wide and the fish eye. The model number for the Utra-wide accessory attachment lens is VCL-ECU1

  • Thank you for the comparison :) which do you find yourself using more? The wide or the fish eye??

  • @ooharloo I have the Ultra_wide attachment on virtually all the time. If I need a slightly narrower point of view I slip it off for a bit. The advantage of the ultra-wide is good verticals and you can get in close to a person with little to no distortion and include some background to "fill in" the photo story. I use the fish eye in extremely crowded situations. See the Halloween Skytrain Dance Party on this channel. That is the fish-eye. Wall to wall people and no room to move.

  • Nicely done. Thanks for review!

  • thanks a lot for this very informative video! Just what I wanted to see :)

  • where can i buy this?

  • @PantelicSofija These accessories are available at most all SONY Stores throughout the world. Vancouver has at least two Sony stores... one in Pacific Centre and another on Granville Street downtown. They may be available at a few camera stores or they will special order them for you if not stocked. You may also be able to buy them online through Sony Online.... Sony[DOT]com

  • @DavidSIlvercloud In Canada go to SONY[dot]ca

  • @DavidSIlvercloud

when i put it on my objective its like a black bachround around the filming scene..is that normal?

  • @PantelicSofija You must be putting it on the 18-55mm lens. This adapter was designed to use on the 16mm lens, not the zoom lens or long focal length lenses. You should keep your 18-55 set at the 18mm setting and the "vignetting" will be at a minimum. But... you really should get the 16mm lens and you will be very, very happy with the adapter lens.

  • @butchnews

    thanks!

uhmm do you maybe know how i could make the black around "smaller" ?

  • @PantelicSofija Your only hope to keep it small is to use the widest setting on your 18-55 lens. The Sony Nex-3 and Nex-5 have been out for more than a year so you may want to look around and see if you can pick up a used 16mm lens if the cost of a new one is too high. You really should try to get the 16mm lens... you will find it very useful.

  • Thanks so much for this great comparison!

  • Thanks as well! Really glad you posted this as I was wondering the differences between the two.

  • Thanks a lot.. I have been looking for this kind of comparison

  • Sorry hit enter in error... It is all about the lens, why not show them in your video? By the way I just used my nex-5 under water scuba diving. Auto focus too slow. As a video camera I don't like it at all. Posted a video of a shark dive using the camera, housing and under water filter.

  • @auroraron Strangely, the reason I bought the Nex-5 was for video. Larger sensor than any normal camcorder, very small, very light and a choice of lenses and an accessory microphone. I found that shooting fireworks took some experimenting. Best to use manual focus and aperture priority for fire works. I've never taken it underwater and have a GoPro for that.

  • @auroraron I've also found that intelligent auto can cause focus problems with wide angle lenses because the camera often picks the higher contrast background... so the best setting for video is Scene mode Landscape setting. But I love the camera... of course I'd rather have a Canon 5D Mark II but it costs 5 times as much.

  • It is all about the men's

  • This was super helpful, thank you.

  • Just found the best smallest strongest case for my NEX camera. Aluminum frame inside! check it out: (copy link to address bar): NEXbag.bymac.org

  • Thank you

  • thank you for posting video this made up my mind on getting the ultrawide angle converter

  • looks like Broadway Street!

  • @samology I live in the south end of Vancouver and most of the streets in my area are full of low rise apartment blocks. A few blocks away the older small homes are slowly being torn down and replaced with very large homes. This was all heavy forest 100 years ago.

  • was this a sony fisheye adapter? or one not made by sony that fits it? becuase ive been looking for one for a nex 3 and the one from sony is ALOT more expensive compared to some other ones that seem to do the same thing. what would you recommend?

  • @TAKR888 This is the fish eye adapter specifically made for the Nex-3 Nex-5 and Nex-10 camera and should be available at all Sony stores or they should be able to get it for you. With tax I seem to recall it set me back about $175. I'd have to look up the bill. It is just excellent. Highly recommended.

  • @butchnews so its the one officially made by sony? model number VCL-ECF1? well its good to know that its definitely worth the price, but i was wondering if you think going for a cheaper option, for example one that says it fits the nex 3 but isnt made by sony, is a good idea? or is it always recommended to go with the official sony lens? thanks for your help

  • @TAKR888 It may seem like a lot of money but it is optimized to work best with that particular lens and you will not likely get the same kind of results unless you use a high quality fish eye lens and a lens adapter... such as the Tokina ultra wide zoom or Canon ultra wide zoom. Both lenses are in the $3,000 bracket. This one does not zoom but has about 170 degree view. I say get it. Save up your quarters.

  • Thanks for this. Really! I've been weighing which adapter I wanted to get. The distortion of the fisheye isn't right for me but the wide angel adapter is.

  • Very helpful. thx

  • Excellent review. Thank you so much. Going to buy the fish-eye tomorrow. Hope your arthritis isn´t giving you too much gip

  • Thanks for such an great video! Do you know how much the fisheye attachment was? What lens it attaches to and where i could purchase one? I only have the standard 18-55mm lens at the moment. Thanks.

  • @Zakkyss I'm not sure where the receipt is but I seem to recall it was about $160 Canadian plus sales tax in Vancouver. It fits the 18-55 lens but not recommended... see some of my other video tests on my ButchPatrol channel. It vignettes that lens at 18mm and gives a very soft focus effect at 55mm. If your local camera store or Sony store doesn't have it you likely get it from Vistek(DOT)ca or other online camera store outlets.

  • @butchnews Okay brillaint. Thanks a lot for your help :) x

  • @Zakkyss P.S. The fish eye and wide angle adapter are designed for use on the 16mm lens which is a very nice lens by itself, so you need to get the 16mm lens. Given a choice between the fish eye and wide angle adapter, the fish eye seems to be the more useful choice. I use the fish eye all the time and you can see most of my recent videos on this channel are all using that camera and lens combination. At other times I also use a GoPro Hero HD camera in the r2 mode (very wide angle 720p).

  • Hey Butch! i ordered the nex 5 today with the f/2.8 16mm pancake and the 18-55mm lens. plus the wide screen & fish eye attachements. did you see there's another lens avaible for the sony e-mount system: SLR Magic Objektiv 35mm f/1.7 Sony NEX E-Bajonett. there are some youtube videos about his lens. it's cool!

  • @craignex I looked it up on Google. Hadn't heard of it, I guess because it isn't made by Sony. It seems like a neat lens, particularly for creative portraiture. And not expensive at all. Most places seem to quote $99.

I'm a wide angle freak but I may get one of those anyways, just to have it in the arsenal.

  • nice video! exactly what i've been looking for! only thing i'm wondering what the 18-55 lens would have been look like compared to the other ones.

  • @craignex I have several other lens attachment comparisons on my ButchPatrol channel of the Nex-5

  • Great comparison. What exactly is the model number of the Sony Nex-5 Ultra Wide angle adaptor?

  • @capturedbytee The Model Number on the box is VCL-ECU1 which I assume is the same in all countries but I can't be sure. I live in Canada. The box has multiple languages on it so I am assuming it is the standard model number. It is called the Ultra Wide Converter for SEL16F28 on the box. It cost me $159.99 plus sales tax at the Sony Store at Pacific Centre Shopping Mall here in Vancouver.... total was $179.19

  • @butchnews Thanks for that. The model number appears consistent here and priced the same with exchange rate in mind.

  • The hoods are build in on both the wide angle and fish eye attachments. They come with a special lens cap that fits into the hood area and on to the lens.

I'll try making a video of the wide angel on the 18-55 shortly. Maybe I'll put that on the ButchPatrol channel. I put this video here to try out some title making with my new editor of some free stock footage I downloaded and the piece of news music I bought for $9 from a royalty free music site.

  • Can you remove the lens hood from the wide angle/fisheye lenses?

And, do you mind demonstrating the wide angle on the 18-55mm please? Don't worry if you can't.

  • @moviesunrated I've posted a test of the ultra wide adapter on the 18-55 on my ButchPatrol channel.
