This is crazy. PSP face plate is easy to change however backplate is hard. I would not recommend any one to do this to there PSP unless you really know what you doing.

you don't need CFW because it is a Hardware modification, however the risks are fairly high if you aren't very careful... You can end up breaking the hinges on the door causing it to not stay closed and ergo you won't be able to play UMDs. hope it helps!
My PSP'S UMD Door is not really broken but the problem is that little gap behind the white strip but i know who did this. These r my cousins called Saqib and Aqif and 1 small cousin named Abdullah.They messed up my PSP and i am sad about this :'(

@drummerjedediah to the right of the thing that spins the UMD there is a laser, very gently wipe the lense with a Q-tip

Custom firmware is software... it involves the memory running thru the psp... this is a hard mod... has nothing to do with it...do ur home work :)
