The animals are learning that people = food is coming...and what will they want to eat if you don't throw them something. It's not teaching them to hunt. It's entertainment for money. For some reason, sometimes cruelty is entertainment...so many examples across the globe and time. As far as the sacrificed animals...most countries sell live mice and goldfish to feed to pet snakes or pet predatory fish, respectively. These animals were marked for death, and this is pretty quick.
I think where's a problem with this whole "it's close to nature" justification. In nature predators have to HUNT down their prey giving these birds a chance to escape. Here humans simply throw the live bird right at the waiting predators essentially reducing the chances of escape to zero. If predators don't have to search, ambush and catch how can it be close to nature?
So throwing bread to ducks is ok, but throwing ducks to cats isn't? These birds are killed more humanely than most of the meat we eat. You can't apply human morality to animals.

I'm Chinese- but born in Hong Kong which was taken over by Britain until 1997. I don't eat dogs or cats or enjoy watching animal devoured- or agree with the practices of "zoos" in general. While I do not agree with these practices the comments on this video are just as appalling. Everybody seems to classify China as the (horrid) tourist girl at 0:41 and ignore the *gasp* other Chinese woman at 2:14, who, guess what? Is the president of the Chinese Association for Protection of Animals.

The difference between animals eating each oher in nature and humans feeding them live and eating them is that humans are supposed to be the most intelligent animal. Protein can be derived from plants. It's purely primitive and instinctual for an animal to want to devour anything when it is hungry. Humans have intelligence and can choose also choosing ethics and morality. It's purely sadistic to let young children watch the torture and pain. This teaches them it's okay to torture.

Morality?! Give me a break, they've been doing this for years, part of keeping live animals alive is to allow them to be alive and search, kill, devour live animals. This keeps the animal's instincts alive! You want a zoo with 'kept' animals, go to San Diego Zoo. Kept animals, just being fed and docile is cruel, as animals were born to be free and wild, not in cages, behind bars. If these birds werent fed to the lions, they'd probably end up un a tiny cage for eggs or meat, and then suffer in the slaughter house. If you ask me, this is not so shocking. If you feed them raw meat without it being alive you are going to get issues with the animal being weak. Its kind of like at parks they say not to feed the ducks because when they leave that area they become less likely to be able to feed themselves. as well as it is not as healthy for the duck. by the way, don't feed ducks bread they can't digest it.
