this galileo story is a sham, a propagandistic plot of liberals and protestants to bring shame to the church....galileo was never condemned to all that they said...he lived in cardinal's villa, and his daughter became a nun. He died with the pope blesssings.....john paul II was wrong in his apology as he has been in many things....this kind of things is what brings confusion to the church and to catholics
Well, it is half true that the pope "protected" Galileo. I think there was a lot of "protecting" the general public. The church has never really been optimistic about the ability of laymen to overcome confusion. I think this is one of the most important factors when looking at the discussion between Cardinal Bellarmine and Galileo. It is also, in my opinion, where the church made their mistake.
The Pope protected Galileo, he in fact lived in the Popes residence; he was never a martyr of science as some believe, he died very confortably in his bed. And all this is a fairytale: Galileo was never condemned for any adhesion of heliocentric astronomic theory, even if he believed that this was the only alternative to the ptolomaic model: he was condemned for his opinions about the constitution of matter, which were, gnostic and herectic.
now that I've reached the end of this video, I am a bit disappointed, not speak at all of the political part of the conflict namely the conflict between Galileo and Pope.
and no,,it was not because it was wrong, but because he could not substain his theoryyy.....!!!
