@tbonezach Actually you can get away with it in this case because the Ab is functioning as the Dominant 7th of the Bb7 arpeggio. Since the Ab in first is flat it is the same as playing it in third but adjusting out for proper intonation. The Ab in 1st is nice because it is a slightly darker timbre since it is a lower partial on the instrument, it causes more sympathetic vibrations of the overtones.
Smorinjo, just my thoughts, usually too fast or a bit too slow tempo, especially the bajo, he just ran through the lines like speedy, at the end it seemed as though someone nipping at his tuckess. The tenor was having either an intermittent stroke or a series of heart attacks when wielding his lines, and the soprano's voice was just crumbling .. Cecilia Bartoli was spot on though.I can never find as good as a cast as in karl Bohm's interpretation for my own taste.
Pape amazing, but Cole is the most gorgeous voice of all, What a spectacular cast!!!! all wonderful. WIsh todays singers sang as well...such control and the CONDUCTING! WOW
@lavanessadivina Although you are correct to commend some very fine singing in this video - to use that as a reason to disregard, disparage and diminish the current generation or "todays singers" as you put it, seems very harsh to me and is patently not true. I can only hope that your opinion is based on an inability to attend some wonderful performances of this work here in the 21st century and that your bias is not based on any physical auricular ailment which may be impairing your judgement.

Cole is incredible but the fast timing messes up the passion of the solo piece. Little too fast.

@jomoses07 Absolutely! It is too fast. It should be slower, it interferes with the passion of the solo tenor piece.

IMO,
1. The trumpet scatters a wondrous sound way too fast,
2. Tenor,
3. Violins are too mild, soapy
I do prefer Bohm version
