It would be twice the knife if the blade was 8mm thick along the spine or at least 7.5mm. The blade is a bit skimpy for chopping branches and the rope should be suspended from one end to show the sharpness and cutting ability. Alltogether, it's quite a good knife but I would like a thicker spine .
@HiCapacity 440C, .90% carbon abd around 12% chromium. It isn't 440A that all the crappy $1 pocket knives are made of. It can hold an edge much better, and not overloaded with chromium.
u chould use that knife for every days tasks like skinning dinosaurs or cleaning under Rosie O'Donnell's finger nails or use it to to make firewood by chopping trees in half
@Maddawwg45 I used this knife to chop up my christmas tree into firewood. From cutting off all the branches to chopping up the trunk it took less than 10 minutes.
Love this knife, had it for a few months now. it was fairly sharp out of the box but a little extra sharpening will really make it like a razor. I tried the belt cutting test and accidentally whacked it against a steel pole. and I mean I really whacked it with all my strength and it barely dented a little part of the blade, which is an easy fix.
This is such a pretty knife, as close the the Crock Dundee knife as you can get without getting sued i bet. Too bad they used stainless, too brittle. If push comes to shove it will chip the edge instead of putting a ding in it that could be smoothed out with a file. At $250 a pop, I say just get a Ontario Marine Raider Bowie, made from 1/4 thick 1095 carbon steel, nearly identical in length, better sheath and 4x cheaper. If you want it shiny, sand of the finish and whip out the metal polish.
BlackCreekKnives. This knife was purchased in Nov 2010. It was returned in late Sept 2011. A brand new knife was sent on Oct 1 2011. Blade magazine seemed to think it was good enough to make in their mag. Too many people buy this knife and try to see if it can be destroyed.

Those guys are dangerous, they use this "thing" like fools. Never try to do this at home kids ! By the way, the 440C has a good edge if you sharpen it every time you use it....
440C... really? Couldn't you use real steal, 1050 to 1095. Mirror polished and a little oil every now and then and you wont have to worry about rust. 440 is the worst "steel" ever for knives.
The Bowie knife is pretty much as American as knives get and yet it is associated with Australia. Not that I have a problem with this. If any country is worthy of using a knife invented by a man who's most famous acts were inventing a huge knife, bar fighting and dying in battle at the Alamo it is Australia.
Guys this blade is a differently tempered 440c not to be confused with the less desirable 440a or 440b. This is a very nice knife. carbon steel blades can be great with the right heat treating just like list like stainless blades. however carbon steel will rust and stain VERY easily, even sitting in the sheath. Stainless does not mean rust free but rather rust/ stain resistant.
Totally right, 440C is actually a pretty good steel if you ask me; I`d chose it over 1095 if I were to be in a more humid climate than where I live now.
Besides, even "good high carbon steels" like 1095 can, without the proper heat treatment, suck at times.
Likewise, lower grade steels like 420HC (especially from buck) can be great.
But I doubt high carbon blades rust that much if you lube it from time to time.
I mean, my RAT 7 has held up pretty good against corrosion.
@MrTheoriginalderek No such thing as hype when it comes to Randall knives and for a fact I can think of many other brands I would rather use than this down under brand.Aus6-8 steel sucks I'd rather have 440A "really"haha and Randall knives are so far above this it's not even fare to compare.
@Awesomechild96 $248 on their site. But I got mine on amazon for 25% off. I got it today and its amazing! the only flaw is the sheath doesnt fit well, its hard to draw the knife with one hand. Better hurry up if you want one on amazon, there are only 4 left in stock last time i checked.
@BigPapaBear1000 I had the same problem with mine, but it came good with a bit of use.
If it's a real problem, then smear some bee's wax on the blade, then slip it in and out a few times. that will generally get them moving 'lickity split'. I hope you enjoy yours as much as i enjoy mine. It's a real workhorse.
Guy is pulling the knife sideways out of a rotten stump... Sounds effects. Jack ass recklessly hacking at a twig(was waiting for him to cut his finger off). Guy stands on handle while supporting his body weight with his arms out of the camera view. Great advertisement.
nice knife i do custom knifes for my self using a multi tool belt sander and buffing wheels,i use croc ,snake roo hide and heavy leather ect for sheaths. handles deer antler ,blade tool steel old 1930s saw mill blades know as L6 it will hold a edge long time , or for a big bush knife i use old chain saw bars,i get hills to heat treat them. if you want a razor sharp knife buy a med soft buffing wheel, create a bur on the edge with stone or belt sander or steel.then buff at 15-20% 2 passes,
@Eurotrash4367 First of all, there are 3 different series of 440 stainless; A,B,and C. This blade happens to be 440C. 440C is a good performing steel, that used to be the industry standard for stainless. It holds an edge well, is tough for a mid HRC stainless, and has good rust resistance.
@Eurotrash4367 440 "C" . Big difference. I made knives from 440C and could do the same tests. Especially with a heat treatment by Paul Bos with a cryogenic quench.
@Eurotrash4367 So very true. I would much rather have something that holds a fine edge over a long period of time, and have it be slightly brittle and rust if I didn't take good enough care of it, than something that will never hold an edge, but will bend instead of snap, and never rust. That said, the stuff in the video is still 440C, which I believe has a slightly higher carbon content, making it that much harder. Not the best, but it is a hell of a lot better than regular 440 (A, I believe.).
@Eurotrash4367 Well, 440C can be just as crappy, but generally, for more than just the 440 stainless, a lot of performance can be gained or lost depending on the quality of the heat treat. Sorry, I can be long winded, and most of that info is about knives in general, I have no idea of the quality of this knife. Heat treat, and quality of workmanship make a good knife. Once you have those, then you may worry about the blade steel (as long as it is not some crappy pot metal).
i recently got one of these knives and it certainly is impressive and intimidating looking but.....it was no where near as sharp as shown. the edge bevel looks close to 40 degrees. My BK9 which is half the blade thickness and much much lighter chops 10 times better than the outback. My outback has also developed a hollow ringing noise like somthing is loose when chopped with, after only chopping 2 small(2-3'') limbs of a tree
2:55 the blade chipped. 440C, while a pretty good steel, is too brittle for this kind of work.
Remember folks: When buying a knife for batoning or chopping like this, it's always easier to correct a fold in the blade than it is to correct a chip.
@MrJapaneseboy1111 Well where did you buy it? Any reputable distributor will handle warranty issues themselves instead of sending you to the manufacturer. If you got it cheap off an auction site, it just might be made in China. I've already seen the first bad knock-offs being sold. By the way, since you saw fit to call me a liar on my channel comments, how about pointing me to the comment you mean, or showing us some of those Google results? Better yet, why not upload a video of the problem?
@MrJapaneseboy1111 No, I do not work for them and I'm not getting paid to answer comments here. So please wipe the foam off your mouth and go yell at your reputable store that won't accept a warranty return. I didn't take your money and you're not getting it back by ranting here. I was just mildly curious since you mention in TheCrocmick's comments that it only cost 18,000 yen which is way too cheap to be genuine. If you don't want to show what the problem is, suit yourself.
@MrJapaneseboy1111 Er, wait - so did you really mean actual straps, as in a string of leather wrapped around the handle?? You do realize the Outback doesn't actually have one, right?
@MrJapaneseboy1111 Yeah, if you had read the comments you would know I also recommend doing it. That has nothing to do with being good or bad, but everything to do with being wood and leather. I'm glad you still find it funny, because frankly I would be kinda pissed at myself for ruining an expensive knife like that. My own Outback is from the first batch and the sheath could be stiffer, but I've had no issues with the stitching. I heard they've improved it in current production.
@MrJapaneseboy1111 shutup you annoying fuck u havent proven shit except talk shit all along if u cant make a vedio of your knife then quit bitching about it here you faggot
This knife is a work of art, but that's all it is. I know of two people that bought it and they told me that it does not hold a good edge. So if you want to be constantly sharpening your knife in the wild, then go for it. If not get a knife that is made of tool steel. Good luck
@85wifebeater Well, IT is made of Stainless steel, so it is corrosion resistant. However, like any knife/sword/firearm reguardless of what it is made of, you should still wipe it down after getting it wet, and give it a light coat of oil to protect it.
This looks like a quality tool i could use. It's a beautiful blade and seems rugged enough. But i have a couple questions? What's the warrenty on it? how well does it hold an edge? How much does it weigh?
It would be twice the knife if the blade was 8mm thick along the spine or at least 7.5mm. The blade is a bit skimpy for chopping branches and the rope should be suspended from one end to show the sharpness and cutting ability. Alltogether, it's quite a good knife but I would like a thicker spine .

i recently got one of these knives and it certainly is impressive and intimidating looking but.....it was no where near as sharp as shown. the edge bevel looks close to 40 degrees. My BK9 which is half the blade thickness and much much lighter chops 10 times better than the outback. My outback has also developed a hollow ringing noise like somthing is loose when chopped with, after only chopping 2 small(2-3'') limbs of a tree

the added chopping sound effects are extra cool

2:55 the blade chipped. 440C, while a pretty good steel, is too brittle for this kind of work.
Remember folks: When buying a knife for batoning or chopping like this, it's always easier to correct a fold in the blade than it is to correct a chip.

It would also be awesome if they made a mini version of that knife.

I just saw this knife today and I actually might drop 250 for it. It's absolutely beautiful piece of workmanship as well as sturdy.

veru suspicious company !
you cant find an addres or land line of the company on their web site !
what kind of company that respect itself doesn't reveal their full addres or phone nm?
you can only contact them by mail !
my downunder knife is crap,crap,crap ! ! !
probably made in china !
the sheath is probably made by a chinese 1 dollar hooker in a sweatshop !
if you google it you will see many people whos knife got broken !
MrJapaneseboy1111 1 year ago
@MrJapaneseboy1111 Well where did you buy it? Any reputable distributor will handle warranty issues themselves instead of sending you to the manufacturer. If you got it cheap off an auction site, it just might be made in China. I've already seen the first bad knock-offs being sold. By the way, since you saw fit to call me a liar on my channel comments, how about pointing me to the comment you mean, or showing us some of those Google results? Better yet, why not upload a video of the problem?

@anotherFinn my knife is genuine.
an you are a company worker no doubt .
i bought it in japan from a store on main street in ueno japan.
make a video? LOL not only i lost 22,000 yen im gona spend time on making a video? LOL
you made a bad product scaming people out of their money AND YOU KNOW IT !
google "downunder bowie not a good knife" or "downunder knife not good"
i even read a comment of a tree surgen who used the knife and the leather straps came off in less then 40 min !
MrJapaneseboy1111 1 year ago
@MrJapaneseboy1111 No, I do not work for them and I'm not getting paid to answer comments here. So please wipe the foam off your mouth and go yell at your reputable store that won't accept a warranty return. I didn't take your money and you're not getting it back by ranting here. I was just mildly curious since you mention in TheCrocmick's comments that it only cost 18,000 yen which is way too cheap to be genuine. If you don't want to show what the problem is, suit yourself.
anotherFinn 1 year ago
@anotherFinn who said my store wont accept warranty?
i already took the starps out and used paracord.
do you have any idea what caind of knives you can get for 200$ in japan?
MrJapaneseboy1111 1 year ago
@MrJapaneseboy1111 Er, wait - so did you really mean actual straps, as in a string of leather wrapped around the handle?? You do realize the Outback doesn't actually have one, right?

@MrJapaneseboy1111 MAGICAL BLADES THAT CUT THROUGH TANKS BRO
Michael2987 11 months ago
@anotherFinn the leather straps on handel are so bad that the "care and maintenance instruction" note says
pleas applay vegetable oil ! HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA !
first when i read this i thoght it was a joke but after i hold the knife in my hands swinging it the leather straps started to to deteriorate !
even if you look at the outback own company video if you look good at the stiches you can see they all BAD !
the blade it self is good but the handle and sheath are so bad its daylight robbery !
MrJapaneseboy1111 1 year ago
@MrJapaneseboy1111 Yeah, if you had read the comments you would know I also recommend doing it. That has nothing to do with being good or bad, but everything to do with being wood and leather. I'm glad you still find it funny, because frankly I would be kinda pissed at myself for ruining an expensive knife like that. My own Outback is from the first batch and the sheath could be stiffer, but I've had no issues with the stitching. I heard they've improved it in current production.

This knife is a work of art, but that's all it is. I know of two people that bought it and they told me that it does not hold a good edge. So if you want to be constantly sharpening your knife in the wild, then go for it. If not get a knife that is made of tool steel. Good luck

Bidon45 1 year ago
@85wifebeater Well, IT is made of Stainless steel, so it is corrosion resistant. However, like any knife/sword/firearm reguardless of what it is made of, you should still wipe it down after getting it wet, and give it a light coat of oil to protect it.

This looks like a quality tool i could use. It's a beautiful blade and seems rugged enough. But i have a couple questions? What's the warrenty on it? how well does it hold an edge? How much does it weigh?
